This past week, I finally got my first ex-retail standee, a tabletop model made to advertise Wii Sin and Punishment 2 (a game I own). What is a standee? One of those point-of-sale cutouts made to advertise a game. Most nowadays are pretty large, with lifesized characters like Halo's Master Chief or Duke Nukem.
My model was pretty beaten up, heavily sunfaded, and was missing a cardboard cutout object that stuck onto the main piece. It seems to be pretty unusual in that it uses both electronics and a motor to make it more eye-catching; most are just cardboard cutouts. Too bad everything was broken inside! I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron and a multi-meter so it turned into a fun project sorting things out. The soldering for the electronics was very poor and it was grounding out, cooking the batteries and burning out both green LEDs for the eyes. Thankfully the LED dimmer circuitry was still functional. I corrected the poor solder work, tracked down new solder points, added a new battery holder, stole two replacement red LEDs from a dead SNK arcade board. Wallah! Fixed.
Here's a picture of the only other one I could find online:63156316
Does anyone else collect these? Care to share with a collector just starting out?
