I agree you'd get this list from anybody you survey, as long as you pick a random group of 20/30-somethings, with the only difference being that SOTN wouldn't be on there and FFVII would take it's place, probably closer to the top spot, with a Nintendo game winning out. -_-
If I made a top 10, it would be a mess because I'd try to keep my nostalgia out of it.

If I remember correctly this was something around 80-100 people surveyed from the site for top 25 lists, which were then tallied up, very slowly and with much help by Flack's wife, then posted the top 100.
Shame on me for posting the listing so messily. Boo me.

I have everything compiled but i'm waiting on the owner of the website to figure out how we're going to host a vote. I will probably be asking here for suggestions because asking everyone to pick their favorite 100 in no particular order seems a little extreme. But soon I will be posing the list in a new thread (with a link here), for the final touch-ups before figuring out how to host his vote.

Here is the list thus far. Hopefully I didn't leave too much out. But after about 3 hours things were getting hard to see.
From now on DO NOT copy and paste this list.
DO NOT list random games without listing the console they are for.
DO use a format like I did, and look to see the most recent post. The first guy to add games do like I did. Then the next guy copy and paste his list. This way we keep a nice organized list and I can merge it all.
Please no more negative talk about why I should not do this.
Furthermore no compaining about games you don't like in the list.
;Lets keep this as organized and uncluttered as possible.
Thank you all for helping :)

Good lord, so many problems.
1) Top x lists are generally done as a way to make cheap content with the purpose of driving traffic. I have yet to see a Top x list offer any substance behind it, other than to say "yeah, these are popular games that everyone loves, let's make an arbitrary list with an ordering, and people will come here to argue of its merit!"
2) The best game of all time is a subjective manner individually, let alone collectively. For instance, I consider Yoshi's Island to be the greatest game of all time. It has an amazingly balanced combination of beautiful, distinictive graphics, great music, perfect play control, innovative level design, interesting uses of technology, and lots of replay value. Yet, on your compiled list of games, it doesn't even make it. Is Yoshi's Island better or worse than a game like Final Fantasy VI, for instance? That's an apples and oranges comparison, as one is a platform game and the other is a JRPG. It's like comparing The Hobbit with Tess of the D'Ubervilles, two amazing books, but you can't really say one is better than the other, because they are different genres.
3) 100 games is far too many. I dare say that few people have played through 100 games, let alone the the hundreds to thousands that would be required to pare a list down to just 100. You'd have to play games the way that Roger Ebert watched movies - it is a lifetime career. When Ebert made up his list of best movies, it usually included some pretty obscure stuff that most people would never have seen. I'd value a list by a video game reviewer equivalent of Ebert, but as far as I know, nobody like that exists. One of the big issues is that many great games take upwards of 100 hours to finish, so good luck with that.
4) To futher that point, a top list of a single genre, compiled by an expert who has played a vast amount of games in that genre, would be far more valuable than a general "100 games" list.
5) This (http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=ranker_sucks).

5) This (http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=ranker_sucks).
1.) I actually plan on having people who participate in voting and gathering the voting list to help write why the game deserves to be in the list.
2.) It's not on there because you failed to read the post right above you and add it.
3.) People don't have to vote for 100 games. They can vote for as many as they like up to 100. So there will be no need to have played through 100 games that are 50,000 hours long
4.) That kind of contradicts what you said before. But yeah that would be nice. But seeing how most movies are 1.5 to 3 hours long it would be a lot more work to be a game expert or especially a RPG expert. But i'm sure many people like myself have spent thousands and thousands of hours over the 25-30 years to have a pretty good idea where to start. And when you put many people together all who have played some of the good games the best games tend to surface. But even if you watch the At the Movies type of programs you still get one or 2 peoples opinions. Not hundreds. Just like any type of research whether forming a list or research at school you cover more ground and get more accurate data. If it was up to me Landstalker would be in the top 10. But I think most people would agree i'm an idiot.
5.) Yes some people dream of running websites and eventually doing what they love and getting paid for it through advertising. Hence the Digitpress forums.
6.) if you want to complain start a new thread and boycot this one. I would like to keep things orderly. I don't need people telling me that it can't be done, or why I should not do it, or whatever. So you can add Yoshi to the list and participate if you like.

And you missed my point. Producing a top x list by a vote amongst hundreds of people has little value, as popular games will necessarily float to the top, because they are the only ones that everyone has played. A top x list produced by a single person is far more interesting and valuable, because you know that the person has played those games. To produce a list of the top 100 games is kind of hard for a single person, because it would require that preson playing through hundreds of games, something few people have the time to do.
Also, do you really think that this idea is unique? Gamefaqs did a similar thing in 2009 (http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/bge09.html). What makes you think that your results will differ that much? They ended up getting a final round that was completely dominated by popular Nintendo games. IGN compiled a top 100 list in 2008 (http://top100.ign.com/2005/001-010.html). Guess what, Super Mario Bros, a game you didn't even consider initially, came in #1! Yes, their list could have been put in arbitrary order, because it is a mish-mash of different genres (what makes them rank Super Mario Bros over Tetris? There is no objective reason given.) EGM produced a top 200 video game list for their 200th issue in 2006 (http://www.1up.com/features/egm-200-greatest-videogames), again with Super Mario Bros. at the number 1 game. Their reasoning was more objective, though I don't think there is a soul out there who would argue Super Mario Bros is better than Super Mario Bros. 3. They can perhaps be excused because they were ranking things not solely based on how much fun the game was, but also on their impact and innovative qualities. I've found some other top 100 lists. Gamesradar lists Portal as their top game of all time (http://www.gamesradar.com/best-games-ever/), on the basis of "games we would still play right now". G4TV lists Super Mario Bros as their greatest game in their top 100 list (http://www.g4tv.com/top-100/), though the basis for their list is not stated. Empire Online picked Super Mario World in their top 100 list (http://www.empireonline.com/100greatestgames/). Game Informer picked The Legend of Zelda (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2009/11/16/game-informer-s-top-100-games-of-all-time-circa-issue-100.aspx) as their best game in their top 100 list for their 100th issue in 2001. VGChartz (I still shutter at the name of that website) had a reader poll that picked Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (http://www.vgchartz.com/article/3742/the-vgc-top-100-best-games-of-all-time-10-1/) as the greatest game of all time in their top 100 list in 2009. For Him Magazine (http://www.fhm.com/reviews/console-games/fhms-100-greatest-games-of-all-time-20090901) also picked Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for their top 100 list in 2010. Edge Magazine did a top 100 list in 2007 (http://www.edge-online.com/features/edges-top-100-games-all-time/), and guess what? Also picked Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Time Magazine produced a top 100 list (http://techland.time.com/2012/11/15/all-time-100-video-games/slide/all/), but thankfully didn't attempt some sort of arbitrary ranking (the reader poll put Pac-Man on top).
What makes the list you are proposing any better than these ones? What is your justification on making a top 100 list? Many of these lists were created by people who's profession is playing video games. This is what you said about it:
Yes but ign and those other companies have no clue what they are talking about.
I just feel like a list by real gamers, would be nice. You all can list and the games that popup the most get in. How many people actually participated in a IGN top 100 list? Probably just the guy who wrote it
What a load of rubbish. Yes, I do think that a top 100 list made by professionals is more valuable than a random person on the Internet.
Do we really need to be told again that Tetris, Super Mario Bros, Final Fantasy VI, Street Fighter II and Pac Man are some of the greatest games ever? Also your current list just looks like a random assortment of games that people consider to be good (I would argue that the vast majority of people would be bored to death with the Wizardry series). Without any objective criteria, your list will end up looking exactly like the other lists, with maybe slightly different order.

First I agree most people would be bored With Wizardry series. I know i would but i'm not picking the games just adding them. If we don't want a standard list then if people are suggesting these games they need to be added. Otherwise it will be the same standard games as seen on every other token 100 list.
Second...I don't think professional opinion is any better because they are not professionals. Most of the people who write for large video game companies like IGN or Gamestop are most likey gamers, but are also probably people with degrees in journalism. Which means writing is probaly their first passion. I have failed to see any college that offers a degree in reviewing video games. So I feel like any ordinary guy who has a passion for games could probably do just as well as the so called professional game reviewers if they actually put forth effort.
Third, I never said the idea was unique. And the title is not set in stone. But I do feel my list will be different, but obviously some games will still be on the top. I predict most of the major games like Zelda and such to place strongly. Which makes sense because to the mojority of gamers they are the best games. Even gamers like here on digit press that have public library sized collections feel they are. But the reason I feel it will be different is because I think games like Ikaruga, Turbo Grafx titles, Arcade games and such may surprise some people and make it on the list. Why do I feel this way? Because I am going to advertise the voting through many websites covering all aspects of gaming from forums to specific consoles, to arcade gaming, to PC gaming. And also general forums like Digitpress where there is a well rounded bunch. It's not just going to take place in one forum. Digitpress is only the beginning to get a good list started. Here are a few of the forums I plan on advertising in...
here
neo-geo.com
Shoryuken.com
nintendo age
sega 16
pc engine fx.com
gametz
assembler
KLOV
PCgamer
shmups
and many others.
Finally as stated many times before... I am going to make it very clear this list is not influential games. But games gamers feel stand the test of time and are still fun to play. For example if you were stranded on a desert island and could only pick 100 games to play the rest of your life what would they be. Also I am trying to come up with ideas on how to vote. 100 votes is a lot for each person. I am toying with the idea of giving each person 100 votes to do with what they like. So they could vote for 100 games one time each, or if they feel very strongly about a few games they could vote say 10 times each for 10 games, or 100 time for a single game. I will probably propose this idea to all the forums and see what everyone thinks.
Finally again... I said earlier early in the thread I want this list to be done like someone who would collect scientific data. With the tp 100 list I plan on providing where the data came from, number of voters, number of votes per game etc... And I plan on having people who voted write up a paragraph or 2 about a game they picked. Maybe multiple people per game if possible. I don't want a random list with no credentials. I want something you could write a paer on in school and provide factual data, pie charts, and citations.
So if you ever plan on not complaining and joining in since we probably need people like you to weigh out the standard games then you are more than welcome to help vote.

I'm honestly surprised to see this is still being worked on. 100 games is a rather large undertaking, for reasons badinsults has already covered. In particular, it's the 'of all time' part of this project that bothers me. That implies that every video game every coded is being considered and that's just straight up bullshit. Perhaps it would be time better spent on switching the format to one that openly admits to the list being personal opinion, and then backing up the opinion with interesting stories and such.

Hmmm... I do have to agree to some extent. What if we changed things a bit. Maybe the 100 greatest games Nintendo Never made. Which would include a list of 100 top voted games not created by nintemdo. I'm not sating cut out all games produced on a nintendo system. I 'm just saying cut out all games developed by nintendo. Zelda, mario, pokemon, etc... the same games everyone aready knows.

The more the list is narrowed, the less objective it claims to be, and the more unusual the choices are, the better, IMO.
For instance,
"Top 100 NTSC released Playstation console (PS1,PS2,PS3, no PSP or Vita) games, in no particular order"
NTSC released only helps prevent praiseworthy import games being excluded from a list they're technically in the running for. Most lists I see totally ignore imports, it's silly to not have the Fire Emblem or Shin Megami Tensei series on top SNES games lists.
One console lineage allows some boundaries for game choices, and a relatively similar continuity of ideaolgy and long running game series/developers (ie: Sega console are known for arcade style gameplay and great arcade ports)
And in "no particular order" prevents the popular games predictably taking top honors, whether they are objectively better games or not
