I'm going to keep this short as I'm at work and on my phone. I am writing a 100 best games of all time article. I want to do it right so i want your opinion on what games you would include. I dont need 100 from everyone but just a handful would he good. And if you want to go all out include why and I will post the best messages in the article and include you in credits. Any game old or New is eligable even PC games.

Those probably won't be making it lol. I'll post after work of some of the possible titles I'm working on including. I'm going to pick my top 20 if each genre, then system, to narrow it down.

Would these games be listed in terms of historical importance? If so, I would suggest starting from the beginning. :)

Ign, G4, EGM, the 100 best games list has been done many times before. Im not sure this generation has many new games going in that list, we need more time to see how they age.
greedostick
04-24-2013, 04:42 PM
Yes but ign and those other companies have no clue what they are talking about.
As for the other person historical importance is not a factor. But can help persuade me. For instance I might include FF7 even though some people hate it because it made a huge impact on gaming, BUT whether you like it or not is a good game. But for instance super Mario bros on NES is q good game and had a bigger impact than FF7 but is no where a top 100 game. There is much better out there than super Mario even though it was huge.

I just feel like a list by real gamers, would be nice. You all can list and the games that popup the most get in. How many people actually participated in a IGN top 100 list? Probably just the guy who wrote it

To me, making a list of the top 100 videogames is like making a list of the top 100 songs. If it isn't constrained by genre or era then it's all apples and oranges. I think a set of genre specific top 10 lists would be more interesting.

Saying Super Mario Bros. is not a top 100 game to retro gamers would be the equivalent of insulting mahomet for the muslims...

Prezz but Mario is not the best. It's a nostalgic pic. I can think of 100 games just on NES that are better than super Mario.

Honestly, if that's your opinion, then I don't want to see your top 100 list. Not including SMB1 sounds more like a "I'm too cool for that" gimmick to me.
Also, as others have said, there's no need for yet a other top 100 list. Everybody and their mother has one. If you're looking for hits, maybe compile a list that's a tad more creative/original.

Portal!
Other games Id put on are Zelda OoT, Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger, Castlevania Symphony of The Night and Super Mario Bros 3.
Some Id think would be interesting to put on the list are Spyro 2 Riptos Rage and Ape Escape, no one ever puts them on the lists........yet.
Oh and a format suggestion, I think a ton of controversy that comes with these types of lists is their rankings, if you did it in alphabetical/numerical order then people would agree more often.

How about a list of the 100 most forgettable games of all time, nothing especially good or bad. It's the type of list you'll forget about right after reading, but it would be something different.

How about top 100 hidden gems or something. Like Jackie Chan's action kung fu, star parodia for pc engine, Raw danger for ps2, War of the monsters, food fight on 7800. The list goes on, everyone knows Zelda and mario, Sonic and the mainstream rpg fare.
I can think of 100 games just on NES that are better than super Mario.
this is just not true.
maybe that should be your list. 100 NES games that are better than SMB1.

But you are missing the point. I'm not choosing the picks that go in. In fact i'm going to tell this guy if I can't get help from the retro gaming community that i'm not doing it. Yes there are tons and tons of lists of the top games but they have no credentials. I want an article you could write a paper on in school with facts not one guy's theory. So maybe I don't think SMB1 doesn't deserve to be on the list. So what? If enough people suggest it it gets on.
This is not my list... It is the communities list backed by opinions of many actual gamers. Our website's theme is to do reviews by real gamers not people paid to say something good about a game. All I am asking if for the support of the community in making it happen.
If you all check our website we do many original lists. Like the best villans or weirdest characters.

There's a recent top 20 of all time list on GFAQs classic gaming board going on now, here:

Unikgamer has lists for all kinds of variables and there are a lot of retro gamers on there, here's top games of the 80s:

If you are insane enough to take the flack for writing a top 100 list at least you are including PC titles (are you acutally going to play all 100?!)
On top of the obvious (Monkey Island, C&C, TIE fighter, Warcraft, Civ etc ) I'd definiely suggest:
Outcast - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMePgitDers - released in 1999. Uses futuristic voxels to give 'huge' draw distances. The frame rate in tha video is a bit wonky, but it looks good whilst running properly.
Tex Murphy - The Pandora Directive - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E1J-28Mtzw - released in 1996, a mix of full 3D wrlds where ou can go poking through people's drawers, FMV and an enjoyable plot which is both dark and funny.
Baldur's Gate II - should probably be #1 on your list.
Planescape: Torment - hang on, maybe this should be #1 on yor list
Hardwar - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl38yNE690w - Ok, maybe this isn't really a "Top 100" game, but it is strangely engrossing. It is definitely a very good game.
Wing Commander IV - Price of Freedom - Great space sim with Mark Hamill et al. Much better than console versions.
Uplink - because it is probably like nothing you have played before.
Ultima VII - because everyone loves a bit of freedom.
Actually, I could probably do 100 PC games. Anyway, you get the idea.

Who do I contact about starting a poll on themainpage for the top 100 of all time? I will see what I can get done.
I am going to compile the lists from here and on neogeo.com tonight after work. If we can get less complaining and more positive input we can get a good pool of games to choose from and adding a other option.should not be hard in case something is not included.
Finally to the SMB people you are just not getting it. It's not my list and I'm not blowingany game off. It's everyone's list! So quit being negative and add smb1 to the list.
I forgot I have played almost all the games mentioned and baldurs gate and aot of the other games mentioned I want on the list also like ikaruga.

It really shouldn't but with this site who knows. So many changes were made to make it stable yet the problems are still here, it's better than it was but the problems aren't gone. This isn't a really busy site anymore so I'm not sure why it has problems.

Well there's your winner then! Sod this SMB nonesense...
NZ17 is the overlord here now, I think.
How exactly is your top 100 working? You compile suggestions sourced from "the community", stick them in a list and have people do some GameFAQs style voting on them? Baldur's Gate II will never win now! It'll also be a huge list and you'd need huge traffic so you didn't have a load of games with 0 votes (SMB would have 123 votes, BGII would have 1). As has been pointed out, this place isn't the bustling hub it once was.
Also - what ever happened to the OTTO Awards? They were great.

I do miss the days of reading through many, many pages of quick moving discussion (and The Sizz). So much so that I've felt the need to start posting a load of inane crap.
I have grown to love the instability of the site. This latest bout seems to be fairly minor (I've seen those screens too). Actually, I don't think it is too bad in the grand scheme of things, so perhaps saying that I have "grown to love the instabiliy of the site" is a bit harsh. It works fine most the time.

You need to define what you want better.
Is this the games that are the most fun to still play today? Games that influenced the industry and created new ideas? Ones you like? Ones your editor likes? Ones your reader(s) like?
The problem with polling a mass of people is that all the averages will just float to the top, and the underrated or unknown games will float to the bottom.
If you want my advice, go through this book first, as it was written by other video game writers:
http://www.amazon.com/1001-Video-Games-Must-Before/dp/0789320908/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366916281&sr=8-1&keywords=1000+Video+Games+You+Must+Play+Before+You +Die
It's very well written and will tell you where to start with what you want. Maybe even give you some ideas on what to you want do in your article so that you will generate something with original content that sparks real discussion.
However, if you want a quick article here is your recipe:
1) Go here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/topgames/
2) Drop the things you've never heard of or think don't fit your audience
3) Add in some retro stuff (maybe 30-40%)
4) Write a blurb on each game including strengths, maybe a weakness or too, and a inside joke from the game.
Boom, your article is done and it'll probably be just as good as the rest of the stuff out there.
*Bonus points if you format it so each game is on a separate page to rack extra page/ad views.

As stated before I would prefer a list of games that are still fun today and a blast to play. I would like a list that a gamer can pick up and enjoy every game if they like the genre of game they see. Like someone mentioned pong earlier and how they negated to pick it because it doesn't hold up well. I totally agree with that. However, it is not my list so it wil be what people choose. Right now I am posting here and on neo-geo. I plan on posting on shmups as well, and gamefaqs. I want to keep it well rounded so I am going to locate other forums ESPECIALLY busy PC forums to get a more well rounded count. So if people have forums they suggest I sign up for especially a good PC one link it up for me please. I want to try and cover all aspects from forums to genre of game to forums for specific consoles, and forums of specific time periods like the retro gamers and forums that cater to the more next gen gamer who may be a bit younnger and wasn't alive for the NES days. I plan on taking suggestions from all these forums, providing a list, with a option to add games not on the list. Then once we have a kick ass list compiling it to a website people can vote on. I am going to ask here and see how it goes. If not here I will try to ask Shawn at the Neo Forums if he can help but that may be unlikely.
Finally as mentioned before my friends runs www.playlegit.net it is a pretty small but growing website but maybe he has the tools to host a poll like this. If worse comes to worse I'll but a website for a few months as the voting will go on for quite awhile. This is not going to be a one week project. Iplan to link the voting page in the forums of the websites I ask for assistance for so people know where to vote.

Glad to see arcade games are being considered.
Off the top of my head I have to give nods to Centipede, Daytona USA, maybe Joust
and most importantly - Assault
Assault might not be a game for everyone, but I can argue it is one of the best games ever made. Assault follows and builds upon a strong tradition of tank games in videogaming. It is one of the very first games which utilized hardware scaling and rotation to deliver a new gaming experience to the users. The dual 4-way control sticks offered an immersive and highly responsive interface. The sound chips were some of the very first used which could output guitars and drums unlike nearly anything heard up to 1988. The graphics are rich and detailed, the animations are nuanced and subtle, the enemies have notable ai, and the game has a decent difficulty curve. The game apparently has a fully developed backstory which is hinted at in the end credits and then synchs up with the playfields in subsequent playthroughs. Assault does have a strong fanbase but unfortunately it never gets recognition as truly being one of the greatest videogames ever designed.

regarding N64,
?????
I strongly believe that Sin & Punishment is one of the greatest games ever made. Personal favorite to play and phenomenal design in all regards.
Bangaioh is another personal favorite, like all time top 20 favorite, but for whatever reasons I don't see it in a top 100 of all time list.
Sin & Punishment on the other hand... it belongs ...maybe at #98 :P
OK here is an unorganized list... Got to get it looking good. Feel free to copy and p[aste at this point, and if you're feeling nice cleaning a little bit up and removing doubles, adding consoles for games etc..

Just alphabetize the list to weed out duplicates. Saw a bunch of Daytona USA in there.
I'd skip these:
Dragon's Lair
Street Fighter 1
Micro Machines - put 2 or '96 on there instead
Tekken 2 - 3?
Marios Bros
Magic Sword
Knights of the Round
Dune 2 - archaic unless you use mods
Warcraft
Pole Position (virtually every modern arcade driver owes their existance to this game) - even from that perspective I think there are more important games
Galaxian (see also above) - galaga is quite enough
Q*bert (@!#?@!)
Battletoads NES, Strider, Ghosts'n Goblins - extremely frustrating games
Sonic CD
Super Mario Kart, F-Zero (SNES) - kinda important, but mode 7 doesn't hold up
Speed Ball and Speed Ball 2 (Amiga) - pretty unbalanced and clunky games
Castlevania 2 (NES)
Afterburner (arcade) - II had better controls iirc, but I'd rather have Galaxy Force II as the super scaler representative
Contra/Gryzor (arcade) - NES?
Ikari Warriors (arcade)
Secret of Mana SNES - unbalanced and padded
Double Dragon 1
Final Fantasy - zzz...
Journey to Silius - everything but the music is pretty average
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force - the series just kept improving

I agree. When it comes to the 8 and 16 bit era i'm pretty knowledgeable with arcade games and console conversions. But honestly I was pretty young when Atari came out, and even though it was my first system I can't bring myslef to really enjoy any of the games to the point where I ever learned a great deal about them. Yeah I like Pac Man, Donkey Kong and such... but I just don't have much interest in the era of gaming without stories or good music. So if someone wants to tackle what atari, coleco, etc... games had better arcade editions input appreciated.
As for the 8 and 16 bit era games I can weed out the obvious better arcade versions, and the console versions that were way different and also need to be included seperate.

Dude, there are dozens of great games on the N64, Banjo Kazooie was the reason I got a nN64.
I will be adding plenty of N64 games. Even ones I want on there personally that no one mentioned. There are some awesome N64 games. I just feel like the ratio of good to bad games on the 64 was lower than other consoles. I feel like Nintendo consoles N64 and later have few top 100 games BUT the few games they have on those consoles are among the best ever and high on the top 100 list. Ocarina of time for example could easily hit the top 5. Even Mario 64, Mario Galazy, and some of the other later Zelda games could make it to the top. But as far as seeing stuff like Mystical Ninja, WCW NWO Revenge, WWF No Mercy, Snowboard Kids, Starfox 64, Ogre Battle 64, Sin and Punishment etc... we will see how the voting turns out. I would like to see some of those make a strong standing.
You need to include 8 bit computer originals, not arcade conversions, for example:
Apple ][: classics like: Lode Runner, Prince of Persia, Kampfgruppe, Ultima series, FS II, Wizardry series... Apple ][ has a library of almost 20.000 games
A8: classics like Star Raiders (the first computer game killer-app btw), M.U.L.E., Miner 2049er, Archon, Alley Cat, Wizards Crown, PCS, Alternate Reality The City, Boulder Dash...A8 has a library of almost 8000 games
C64: classics like Portal, The Castles of Dr Creep, Project Firestart, Impossible Mission, The Bards Tale series...C64 has a library of almost 15.000 games
All the above boast many Infocom classics too.
Those are 'best' 8-bit computer games so far, I could list more.....
If you want to do a list of '100 best games', you cannot ignore them, even if you are unknowledgeable.

This seems like something that would require a fairly systematic approach to it. Lots of discussion on a system by system basis with a poll weeding out the games everyone can agree on and then more discussion + poll to weed out everything that doesn't belong.
As for excellent Atari VCS titles:
Enduro
Keystone Kapers
Pitfall
Pitfall II
H.E.R.O.
Beamrider
Frostbite
Pressure Cooker
Seaquest
Sky Diver
sorry, had enough, too many excellent games on VCS
BTW there's great games on Intellivision, Coleco, Vectrex, Odyssey 2 too.

I'm only going to list games I've actually played,
*Pokemon Gold/Silver-The definitive, peak of ambition. peak of inspiration Pokemon games. Most/all of the "new" Pokemon in G/S were designed alongside the "original 151", and had to be excluded in R/B because the cartridge was 99.9% full. The finest spritework in the series. The incredible surprise endgame feat of being able to explore R/B's region, including challenging its 8 gyms, virtually doubling the game's size. Gamefreak intended G/S to be the "ultimate Pokemon game", and they succeeded, and have never surpassed it.
*Monster Hunter (series)-A series based upon refinement and iteration, the "best" game is difficult to determine. Each game has outstanding gameplay, art direction, and meaningful long term content, and in many ways each sequel is more refined than the last, whilst each individual game maintains an identity of its own. The journey of individual learning and self improvement is massively understated in this series behind the false veneer of cooperative multiplayer, beyond the first few experimental entries and a spinoff MMO besides, Monster Hunter has been a deeply compelling and rewarding single player experience first, and a cooperative multiplayer game as a distant afterthought second.
*Dark Souls-A modern masterpiece, and one of video games highest achievements. Whilst it is the product of iteration and refinement upon past games such as the King's Field series, the Shadow Tower series, Eternal Ring, and specifically Demon's Souls, Dark Souls introduces a redoubled thoughtfulness in its worldbuilding, lore, and style of storytelling, its exquisitely balanced and considered approach to challenge and accomplishment, its variety and maliability of playstyles, its realization of its art direction, and of its potential for unique interaction between its players. Dark Souls offers a labyrinthine world great in scope, consummately encoraging and rewarding exploration, and a world for the player to come to understated on a personal level, not to be detachedly delivered through non interactive cinematics talking at them.
Xenoblade Chronicles
Shadow of the Colossus
Shin Megami Tensei III:Nocturne
The Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time
Yoshi's Island
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid 3:Subsistence
Super Mario Bros 3
Silent Hill 2
And to be more negative, these are the games I would NOT include,
Final Fantasy (series)
Pong
Portal
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
IMO - Some classic games have not aged well. That said, the ones that have are stand out titles. Here are my favorites for each classic system.
Sega Master System - Phantasy Star, Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2, Power Strike
Sega Genesis - Musha and Herzog Zwei
Sega CD - Final Fight CD, Snatcher and Keio Flying Squadron
Sega Saturn - Christmas Nights into Dreams, Guardian Heroes, Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Radiant Silvergun
N64 - Goldeneye, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Mario Brothers 64
Cdi - Lost World, De Zak Van Sam
Neo Geo - Metal Slug, Pulstar, Neo Turfmasters
This should be enough to start some controversy
Archimboldi

#1 - Resident Evil 4
Others that should be considered but are on rarer systems:
TG Duo - R -Type, Sylphia, Castlevania X, Sapphire
3DO - Star Control 2, Lucienne's Quest
Pioneer Laser Active - JB Harold in Blue Chicago Blues
PCFX - Super God Trooper Zeroigar
Oh almost forgot the Dreamcast - Ferrari F355, Ikaruga, Project Justice, Skies of Arcadia

55 tmnt 2
56 tmnt 3
57 duck tales
58 duck tales 2
59 bubble bobble
60 bubble bobble 2
I think I could think of 40 more. But I admit it would be hard. But I honestly feel all these games are more fun than smb1
This is exactly why we dont need another list. Its all personal preference. I would much rather play smb1 than little samson. I would def play smb1 over contra force. its all personal pref.
There are over 100 games on MAME I would rather play than most of these titles listed above. Does that make them BETTER? Maybe, but in the end who cares. Everytime I see a top XXX list that includes Mario, Zelda, Contra, Megaman.. (in the top 10) I cant help but think "This list was composed by a noob'.

Well, my point was that you cant just make a top 'best' list. Im not complaining about the lack of arcade games.
Do a google search. there are already quite a few top 100 lists.
And really, best at WHAT? Ive got a feeling this top 100 BEST video game list will just be a list of 100 popular video games chosen from a list of like 5,000-10,000.
In the end its all personal preference. BEST is a definitive term. Something has to be better than something else at SOMETHING to be the best. Last thing we need is a list telling us how great Zelda and Mario are.

Yes I made that very clear in
je beginning that I wanted a list not of games that changed gaming, but a list anyone could puck a game from that looks interesting and enjoy it. That's why I was pushing not having stuff like pong. But if a game did change gaming, and is amazing then I'm all for it. But like I said a few times before its not my list. I will go through these games, organize the list and start a new thread. This one is getting too full of useless information.

Not sure why people are hating Pong, I still like playing it. Maybe not everyday but I'll still come back to it. It's just way better as a two player game and I tend to play games by myself.

I agree with the mention of not including games in the top 100 because of nostalgia. You see so many top 100 lists that include Dragon Warrior yet there's easily 100 JRPGs that are much better, then there's the good western RPGs. Being the first game in a genre or the first game that made a genre really popular doesn't mean it's a good game, and people shouldn't give games like that a free pass. When reviewing new games, you review them based on every other game released. Why should a rereview of a 20-30 year old game be any different?
Another reason is 100 games is too few to add a game that doesn't deserve it solely because it's an old game.
Here's a few recommendations from me. One of which I'm describing, because while you've probably heard how good it is, you may not have played it.
Grandia PSX and Saturn(JP.) Saturn version is better, but the PSX version is good. Grandia isn't my favorite RPG, but it's way up there. But I'd say that it could be argued that Grandia is the best JRPG. The storyline to Grandia is good, but it's the engaging gameplay that pushes this game above and beyond, making this title more fun to play and better than most RPGs.
Grandia redefines Squaresoft's active time battle system by placing all allies and enemies on a bar that is either in the wait phase, action phase, or act phase. Your normal attack is a combo attack, while a critical is your secondary attack and is also applied to some skills. The critical attack is weaker, but if the enemy is in the action phase and they're hit with a critical attack or critical attack skill, their attack will get cancelled. Defend will guard with your character and then start you halfway up the wait bar. The combat system literally made the series, and even the worst Grandia is still a great game because of it.
Element and weapon types have their own level which is how characters learn new skills and how they level up existing ones, giving players more incentive to use magic and skills regularly. You don't use magic, skills, or specific weapons, then those types don't increase so you don't level. This is also one of the few series where status effects and buffs are as useful other spells. Unlike most RPGs where you'll have a list of skills and spells at the end of the game and you'll use only a few, at the end of Grandia, you'll use more powerful skills, but you'll also use skills you've had since the beginning of the game.
Here's a video of Grandia 2 showing all of the basic concepts of battle. Every title after the first one have completely different ways to level skills and learn spells, but the combat is always based on the same principle. It's short but it shows using critical attacks to cancel enemy actions, defending when an enemy is moving to attack one character, and also a circle ranged spell being cast(there's also single, line, fan, and all.)

I'm still working on this. I have some free time tomorrow and i'm going to work on organizing things, then starting a new uncluttered thread.
@ Tom*
Would you be willing to add all those old classic pc games to the list? It would be much appreciated. I wasn't fortunate to have a computer back them so I'm uncertain I could add them correctly.

It'd also probably be best to get a small team of people to work with you and if you get say 200 games recommended by gamers, play through each game and then after each game is finished, post the game title in a text document whether you liked it better or worse than others and whether you think it was a better game. If you get a few people with you to play through all these games, you compare each of your lists and then reorganize the top 100 from that. One of you might like game as number one, but it might be 200 to everyone else, which would be 150 on average, but then two of you might like a game at 50 and the other two at 70, which would be an average of 60. So base the top 100 on that.
