Another quality entry in the DKC series by Retro. Sometimes I say "they don't make em like they used to", but then I realize that Nintendo, Retro, and some other select companies still do. Beautiful graphics, exciting and varied stages, tried and true gameplay, and sweet music.

Just came back to this after a few months away. Definitely the hardest "Mario" platformer I've played in some time. I thought it was pretty interesting that each of the levels are so small and you only have like 100 seconds to get through it. Kinda made me care even less about collecting Star Coins though. Still very fun and always glad to see Luigi get some love.

Finished Soleil yesterday and finished Ghouls 'n Ghosts today.

Soleil was overall a pretty fun Zelda-style action adventure, though it was really let down by a pretty rubbish translation. I still enjoyed it overall though.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts was one I've been meaning to finish for a while now. I had beaten all the levels in the past but had never bothered to play through it twice in a row to fight the final boss and get the real ending. Finally fixed that today, played through it on Professional difficulty too. All I can say is that I'm grateful Capcom decided to give the game infinite continues!

Complete list of everything I've beaten this year:

Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror
Donkey Kong 64
Pilotwings 64
Mega Man X
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Mega Man 1
Quake
Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition
Earthworm Jim
Rocket: Robot on Wheels
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Final Fantasy IV
Dynamite Headdy
Soleil
Ghouls 'n Ghosts

Definitely a high quality production from Nintendo. Almost everything in the game seems Mario Kart-perfect except once you go 150cc, it turns into an item-rapefest that usually leaves you with some green shells and banana peels to fight for your dignity with. Other than that, the game is superb. Diggin that jazzy soundtrack!

31) Strike Gunner S.T.G.(SNES)

Very generic shmup here. Still, it has very smooth controls and some cool secondary weapons to choose between at each point between the missions. The drawback on the secondary weapons is that you can only use a secondary weapon once for a single stage; once you've chosen it you cannot select it again. Still, that at least leads you to strategically choose certain weapons for certain stages. However, you pick a bad secondary for a stage and when you continue you're stuck with the same secondary until you clear the level. The graphics and art direction are extremely bland. All of the levels are pretty much a single background, with maybe a variant or two thrown in such as a few islands or fortresses. It really does go through the laundry list of stale backgrounds for shooters: forest, desert, snow, space, etc. The game has some decent enough butt-rock though.

I wanna get Sonic CD for the actual Sega Cd, I'm not sure if it has a save option like the Xbox Live Arcade version has? Maybe someone can answer that for me? If it doesn't, I wanna beat it on the Sega CD so it's not as easy with the saves. Not that this game was easy, it was pretty hard.

23. To The Moon

Ok, I admit it, I was wrong about this game. I assumed it was some artys crap and people were overracting to it. It's....really good. It sorta plays itself, but it's still really good. Hit a few nerves with me, so kudos for being the first game in over 10 years to get feels into my cold, black heart.

24. SigCorp - Holiday Special

This is a mini episode that was included in the program files that I only happened to find out about due to a visit to the Steam forums. It focuses on the doctors, a few weeks after the events of To The Moon. It's short and helps set up the story for the next mini episode and then episode 2 thereafter. If you enjoyed To The Moon, worth a play. You already have a copy anyway.

Amazingly easy to finish, but a fun little game. There really isn't much to it. After upgrading my vehicle and setting the records on all the tracks, I just kept on playing for a while. It's disarmingly fun, though it doesn't seem like it should be...if that makes sense.

Beaten off of my original save file from 1995. Feels good to finally scratch this one off the list, I was afraid the battery would die before I ever got around to it. :)

How'd you like PSIV? I've been holding off on finishing this one for a while. I might just start a new save file.

A lot of fun, no doubt, but it got rather frustrating at the end. Some of the final boss battles were a bit gimmicky and down-right clumsy. I really hate it when devs completely go bonkers and cinema-up boss battles in newer games. The controls were obviously not made for some of the situations they were forced into by the devs. I'll leave my complaining for last, but I do want to stress that this is a fun game. The combat it pretty damn sweet, and flying around the city is as fun as ever.

SPOILERS AHEAD: The last Bane fight was a chore, fighting him all hulked up in tight corridors, the game wants you to sneak up behind him and stealth strike him, but not only do you have to wrangle the camera in, but the game seemed to be unable to make up it's mind if it would let me run or keep me in "fighting stance" not allowing me to run. Then, when getting behind Bane, it seemed very hit or miss as to whether the stealth strike icon would show or not. It seemed like you had to be in some certain, invisible spot to trigger it. The Firefly fight was gimmicky confusing, thanks to the devs insistence that it play out like a movie. And the whole "8 of the greatest assassins have come to Gotham to wipe out Batman"-plot was all but forgotten in the last part of the game and we were treated once again to the Batman and Joker show. Oh, and the game did freeze up my Wii U twice in a 10 minute period, each time when a crime in progress triggered. The only other time my Wii U has ever froze up is when using Hulu.

I tend to not include MMOs and similar games in my yearly statistics, but I wanted to talk a bit about Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, having just finished the main storyline. It's a pretty game and very fun, but it gets stuck up it's own ass on attempting to be new and different. A lot of the core mechanics are based around the player understanding the order to use skills in more than theorycrafting. That's...not strictly a problem, depending on which MMO pool you happen to swim in, but I found it both a nice break for the usual (being a WoW player primarily) and fairly grating at other times (being that there are no cleaver ways to get around problems if you're using your skills correctly). There was one instance (the first Garuda fight, for people in the know) that had me pretty impressed with it's difficulty...until I realized it was a pretty well disguised DPS race with a minimum gear requirement (and not all party members need to meet this requirement to breeze past). More than once I wished the crafting system worked like WoW. In WoW it's a simple matter of finding the item you need, clicking the button and poof, you have the item and probably a skill point (level). FF14....oh, man. Leveling bars, high quality item vs. normal quality item system, highly inflated mat costs. The whole thing is such a turn off, which is sad because the visuals and rewards are vast.

As for the story itself, the relevant parts are interesting. I say relevant because this story stalls whenever it can. It's like the quest designers didn't understand how leveling progression worked, so they just padded everything with useless fluff. There was a point where the story said "Ok, this super god is running around. Let's go talk to the last guys who kicked it's ass and get some advice." Only for those heroes to send me on a 25 quest long fetch-quest to....make an omelette. Because it was supposed to prove my tenacity or something and show that I was ready to find a super god. The best part was the NPC with me getting pissed at the start of this fetch-quest chain and pointing out that there was a super god running around, what the hell are we doing.

Would I recommend it? Yeah, I think so. If you want a hardcore MMO experience with a crapton of things to do, go play WoW. If you want something much less that is nonetheless pretty and fairly fun, you could do worse than FF14.

As someone else mentioned, it tries too hard to be a movie, really makes some parts harder than they'd normally be if the camera didn't have to try and pull of money shots every few minutes. My main complaint from the first two games still stands, the controls would be that much more fluid if it had a formal jump button. That out of the way, it's not a horrible game by any stretch. If you enjoyed the first two, no reason to not dive into this one.

Damn, my thumbs, fingers, and arm are sore! Took quite a few hours to battle through this one. Really a fine NES-era wrestling game. The main drawback is constantly having to spam an attack button when close to your opponent; you enter into grapples by landing a strike first. The AI is relentless and super-aggressive, which means you will be tapping A and/or B constantly. What's neat are that the different wrestlers have varied movesets, and their own finishers(though the finishers may not exactly be what the real wrestler used). It's really got it all: different modes, unique moves, finishers, outside the ring action, top rope moves, etc. Really fun game. Ricky Steamboat is the one I took to the championship.

After my brother and I started playing NES games last weekend, I've had that ol' NES itch that needed some scratching. I'd played and finished this game quite a few years ago, but wanted to revisit it. My only real complaint is that the game doesn't have co-op/multi-player. Other than that, it's a very fun game that looks and sounds great.

First time beating RCR. I was always a bit confused about how the food and stages worked, so finally decided to sit down and get a grasp on it. The item/food, stats, and stage/boss stuff is pretty confusing initially, but once you get a grasp of things it really starts to make sense and isn't that complicated. Super fun game. I love how responsive the controls are in the game.

Rule of thumb, it's considered beaten if you've either seen the credits or other popular criteria if a given game doesn't have credits or a formal ending.
But to answer your question, yes, I'd count it.

Very good. Recreates the map from Link to the Past perfectly, while also changing it up. The odd reference is there for the old fan, but not so in your face that the uninitiated will be confused. Dungeons are put together using elements from the old dungeons with new elements. I found it pretty easy to forget that I had crazy 3D wall merging powers, so some of the dungeons were harder than they needed to be. I felt that the bosses were an odd mix of both easier and harder. Easier in that most of them could be pretty easily facerolled with no issues, harder in the sense that dodging is much more of a pain in the ass (probably due to the smaller screen?). Do recommend.

Controls switch back and forth from being nice and tight to slippery as all hell. Odd difficulty spikes as well. Nothing major, but it's noticeable. Short, like all the other inFAMOUS games. They are meant for 100% complete, not just doing the story. I knew that going in, so no complaints here. Really stepped up the character interactions from the last game. Character that are not the main two characters are developed and have interesting backstories. Do recommend.

So.... Not bad. Not as crazy as the first one IMO but still pretty wild with a really mind numbing series of different endings to it all. And with a confirmation that there will be a 3rd season by telltale games.
How...... I have no friggin idea. All the ending choices go in so many different directions from each other its just insane
Unless they start off with a entire new cast all over again.

7. Red Dead Redemption 9/1 xbox 360

Finally beaten this game. Very long game imo for what it is. almost seems drawn out. But I think its due to its style and nature from slower horse travel vs faster car travel in the GTA series for one thing.
And they took a different approach to a ending then what I am use to in games. Can't say I have ever seen a ending like that one before.
The graphics are good. The sounds good.
There were only a few things that bugged me. The time frame. I know its a fictional story done in a some what fictional world but its suppose to take place in south central area (southern texas/new mexico) during 1910-1911 (no one really knows. The map says 1910 but its written up as 1911 i suppose so who knows).
But everything about the games world tells me late 1800s and a gamer even took this to a actual western historian and even he said late 1800s except for a few details. For one the 3 or so cars you see in the game which resemble about 1910. The movies you can watch which of that quality would be about 1910. and the town black water looks like a southern dixion style town you'd see around early 1900s in areas like mississippi and alabama and louisianna and such. Other then that everything else screams late 1800s. so the worlds time is a bit confusing.
and the other one is they took a step back in their games when they made it so john cannot go in the water like GTA Vice City and before. What the hell is that shit? Oh well whatever Good story good game. Now to play the undead expansion ;)

Poured 140+ hours into this one. Didn't care for the way the devs extended the length of the game in the 2nd half, but overall it was a very fun and well-made game. The voice acting was pretty bad though. Great music, great mechanics, pretty graphics, and superb options(skipping or ramping up random battles, auto-repeating commands in battle, etc). Looking forward to the sequel.

Fairly short game, even if you're going through all the dialog options. Not particularly challenging either. But fun. Fairly engaging story, decent voice acting (some cracking in the audio, like it was done with cheap equipment), not very interesting OST, but it doesn't hurt the overall product. Wish the saves showed the date they were made, makes picking the game up after a few days a pain. And I didn't like how the just closes itself after the credits. No real reason, I jut don't appreciate games doing that. Overall, do recommend.

31. Gone Home

Really good. All the stories being pieced together are fairly interesting. Audio is great too. No complaints, wish they'd have made better use of the inventory. Maybe make a things a tad more puzzle filled, but this works. Do recommend.

Not bad for a free cellphone game. Units sometimes don't respond to touches, but that might be an issue with my phone. OST and visuals are a lovely mishmash of all pre-PS1 Final Fantasy games. Not amazing, but worth a look.

Really had a lot of fun with Hyrule Warriors. I love that Team Ninja realistic/cartoon look and it works really well in the game. Tons of unlockables and extra modes, but not sure if I'll delve into that with my ever-growing mound of games to play.

As for Fist of the North Star, well it's just cool to play a FotNS game haha. The game itself is pretty bland and ultra simplistic. I can't imagine VS mode would be any better.

Finally played thru this game, loved every second of it, I almost 100%'d it, I was missing 2 heart containers, 22 skulltulas and 1 glass bottle and just decided to go finish it. It's the first Zelda game I've ever played thru completely, loved it, one of the best games I've ever played, it desserves all the attention that it gets cuz every thing about this is awesome. The combat is enjoyable and not tedious like many hack n slashes, the puzzles r clever, its full of secrets and hidden items and a great storyline, the simple polygon graphics are actually somewhat charming to me and the music brings back a lot of nostalgia from watching my younger brother play this back in the 90s. Amazing game.

Felt shorter than the first game, despite claims to being twice as long. No real complaints outside of that, although the new Creepy Treat art bummed me out a bit. I like the style, I just think the old art worked better. It plays great, is charming as all hell, has plenty of visual gags and has a mildly interesting story. Fully recommend, particularly for those who were fans of the first game. Now to wait for the DLC packs to roll out.

I played the SNES version a lot at my cousin's back in the day; the "arcade" version seems to be more frantic. I really dig the "helper" system. Also part of the Capcom Classics Collection Remixed compilation.

Very good. As with each installment so far, the music, voice acting and visuals have taken another step up. This one was a tad longer than the previous and had much stronger puzzles. Story took a swift kick the rear and got me really interested in playing the final game.

I had a good, thought short time with this one. It's not by any means a great beat-em-up in my book, but a fun pick up and play type of game. I dig the backgrounds, the music, and the "thud" when you smack the baddies.
