today I learned that the power plug on the Japanese PSX I got (SCPH 5500) is different than ALL 16 of the US models I have.
observe

US one on top
Japanese one on the bottom
bottom one says on the sticker...

what the hell
I'm gonna swap the PSU from a crappy broken US PSX I have around here.
I wanted to sell it and I am not sure about selling it with something like this and I am unable to test it as is, I'd have to hit up a thrift for the right end plug and I don't have time for that

Most Japanese systems have that plug receptacle. The AC adapter is inside the system, so the power cord from a Japanese system works fine with a US, but the US won't fit due to the square side. You can buy generic power cables that'll work just fine with the JP system, as the electricity is regulated in the built in adapter, not the cord.

While we're on topic of the psx desr, the bios has recently been patched to translate to English, you need to have freemcboot installed (oh yeah u can install free mc boot on them to, games running off internal HD)
You need to head over to the Russian playstation forums to find the patch and instructions. I haven't done it on mine because even with Google translations I can't make heads or tails of that shit

Pretty much every thrift store I visit has a box with tons of those cords. I wouldn't be surprised if you could pilfer one from another device in your house right now that you aren't remembering has that cable.

I think you're underestimating this. Try the good games before writing it off.

uhh, what?
any way I swapped the PSU. like I said I am going to sell this to some one I know and I know they'll think to look for the square ended cable if they lose one.
i'll get a double round ended cable some day, I actually looked high and low for one and I actually don't have any, i'll then use that PSU as a replacement for when I find a bad one in a system, which hasn't happened yet but always could.
as for writing it off, I'm not writing it off. I have plenty to use...

I forgot to mention that I got this PSX as junk in a Japanese junk lot with those 2 boxed saturns, a round button famicom in a square button famicom box and a GBA, so far its all worked, no problems. its all been in really good shape too, except for the famicom, it was so bad

Here, I translated it to German for you. Maybe you can understand this better. No?
In all seriousness, I believe he's confused between the PS1 and the PS2. I've never heard of a PS1 running FMCB. Besides, the PS1 has no way to link a USB HDD to load games.
BTW, I believe the Dreamcast and original Xbox used the double-round plug that you're looking for.

2 systems I don't have in my possession right now and all my laptop power bricks use the round square us style PSX plug

Yeeep, known about this for years myself. I use the double-round that came with my Japanese PS2 for my US PS1 as well (I have the US PS1 stacked on top of the PS2, so it's easy to swap). It's nice to cut down on the number of cables hanging around. I should probably use it on my Dreamcast which is right next to the PlayStation systems, but eh I was lazy and just gave the Dreamcast its own plug. Saturn uses the same cable too, by the way.

Doesn't the original xbox use one of those?

Yep.
I swapped it none the less and no issues.
I find it odd that it shows 250v on the top of the psu must be a stepping transformer? I donno

For reference, the technical name is IEC 60320 C7 (double-round) / C7P (square).

Isn't there some small risk involved in using the double-round cable in a square-ended socket?

There's a slight risk of a device becoming a shock hazard if it's not polarized, it won't really affect it's operation. The case to a PS1 is plastic so it's near impossible to become electrified, it's not like a metal cased appliance like a toaster. There's more of a risk for the cable itself to become frayed and shocking you than being shocked by the device that the cable plugs into.

Not that i know of. The end of the plug doesn't seem to be polarized

Oh shit, my bad, because u said psx and not ps1 and the whole "Japan" thing, not to mention the fact I wrote that before I passed out last night I assumed u were talking about the Japanese psx desr 5500
Can we all collectively just drop the whole "psx" thing and just go numbers like most ppl do when spoken out loud?
Never heard anyone call a ps1 a psx spoken out loud

I just asked the wife, "Have you ever heard me say PSX before?" she immediately said yeah, without hesitation. So, yeah, I do say PSX out loud.

Some sites claim that the scheme goes back to the antediluvian days when the Playstation was planned as the SNES CD-ROM extension and was accordingly named in the same fashion as the Satellaview-X.
