I am currently attempting Bats & Terry (Famicom) for the players choice. This is a very buggy game. So far I have seen enemies get stuck in walls, walk on air, die for no apparent reason, spawn where they shouldn't, and not spawn at all. Additionally, I managed to get stuck in a few walls and die by wrapping around from the top of the screen to a pit on the bottom of the screen. Yet, somehow, the game is fun.

Now, I have a question. This game allows you to continue from the beginning of the world where you lost your last life by pressing A + Start. I have no idea whether or not this is documented in the manual and the game has no continues otherwise. Is continuing like this permissible or is it considered a cheat?

In the absence of information, we'll say it's ok.

Finally done with Burning Force after slinging obscenities out loud constantly. On my last sliver of life, had a continue to spare though. What a frustrating game. Day 4-1 boss is just unfair, period. The last boss takes about a million shots in precise locations. Thought it would never end. I'll never play this game again in my life. Unless I wanna give myself a stroke.

In that case, Bats & Terry is completed.

Vice: Project Doom - Completed

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/433791/vpd.jpg

Another fast-paced action game with heavy Ninja Gaiden influences (not necessarily a bad thing). The way the enemies burst when you hit them, the waterfall level, the train level with the screen intermittently blacking out, the enemy patterns, the energy bar, the cutscenes, and a ton of cheap hits all combine to make this really feel like an NG game. Plenty of aggravation will be had as enemies bounce you around in the later levels, and there's some annoying platforming in the last stage (still not as bad as NG1 though).

A few of the early bosses can be taken down just by rushing in and going blow for blow, but don't try that with the later ones. The final boss has an easy pattern but you have to move quickly and if you only have the sword, there's not much room for error in your positioning.

The Spy Hunter-ish shmup levels and the Operation Wolf-style shooting rounds were a nice change of pace.

Fun game, but SO frustrating at times.

Man, starting to feel guilty about Burning Force pissing everbody off, but congrats to those who beat it. I love the shit out of that game, but I've had a long time to come to terms with it.

On a related note, starting with tomorrow's new games, there will be an "import alternate." Basically, you'll be allowed to skip on one game a week that you don't own or like in favor of an oddball import. As a warning, my import tastes can be a little sideways, but it'll offer up an alternative to those who want to try something different or just hit a wall on a game.

Edit: also, a new poster who is waiting to be approved or something has pm'd me his wins, so when you see a new player listed in the standings this week, it's new DP member biofall.

Any thoughts about offering a couple free points to any late-starters? That might encourage some new folks to join in on the fun.

Hmm... I wouldn't want to undermine the efforts of those who have played, but maybe we can do something like a short window after joining for new players to play previous challenge games during their first couple of weeks, minus the player's choice games.

I discovered that I didn't have the Vice game for NES either, so I've just been dedicating all my gaming time to Muramasa: The Demon Blade. I really, REALLY enjoy this game! It's just flat out gorgeous.

I really love the landscapes and the dialog, the voice acting, and the combat system, however, truth be told I sort of suck at the combat, because I'm just AWFUL at those little challenge sections through our the game that arr in the trees locked behind the magic barriers, where you have to defeat 100 enemies each in. Even when I'm several levels above the level they suggest you be at before taking them on I still get my ass handed to me.

I think I've only beaten one of them, which was the 100 ninjas one in the 5th or 6th region.

Glad you're digging it! Odin Sphere is extremely similiar, so if you have that one, it's a great game with Norse mythological overtones. Dragon's Crown is my personal favorite, but that has a lot to do with how hard I love a good beat 'em up, and it has ridiculously fun co-op.

Hey guys, thanks for the warm welcome. Personally I'm totally fine starting with no points. The challenge for me is just a nice way to direct me towards what to play next and potentially introduce me to new games. For example this week I had a blast playing Vice: Project Doom and hadn't ever heard of the game prior to the forum. Additionally the players choice gave me a reason to play a game that has been on my backlog for a while, Hotline Miami 2. While Burning force was a little frustrating and I never finished it, I did have fun for a short while and have no regrets about playing it.

Additionally I have started playing Odin Sphere(another game that was on my backlog) for the monthly RPG and I'm having a good time. This is my first Vanillaware game so it feels like a very new experience. Currently on the second book so still have a long way to go but the game has yet to start feeling stale and I definitely intend to finish it.

I pieced together my own ridiculous story based off of the little cutscenes seemingly random events. Stage 11 was pretty tough; having to redo the hardest platforming segment in the game every time you died to the boss was annoying but eventually I figured out the correct spots to neutral jump at and it became almost second nature.

I don't have Dragon's Crown yet, but it was already on my radar. All of these games seem to have a similar aesthetic, which is a huge plus for me because I love the art style. I imagine it can be off putting to some though. Especially with Dragon's Crown. Vanillaware seems to really like to exaggerate and distort powerful characters with almost grotesque, highly stylized proportions. It's like a freaky Ukiyo-e manga mashup, but I dig it.

Definitely open to suggestions, as the more players, the more fun! I'll try and come up with a new player welcome rule over the course of the week, and as long as there are no objections, we'll go from there.Just a suggestion, but maybe HALF POINTS could be awarded to newly 'registered' players for completing expired GCC selections, but a only for a limited time period after they joined, like a few weeks to a month, or something?

They could gain enough points to jump in and be competitive, but not enough to unfairly blow early players out of the water, since their points for old entries would be Nerfed, and time wouldn't allow most to blow through everything anyway, so I doubt they'd rack up an obscene amount. We're basically using the honor system already, and I doubt anyone has the time to play through most of the past catalog, so I don't think they'd have an unfair advantage even if they marathoned.

Or that could be a completely horrible idea. I don't know, I haven't really thought it through. ^_^

New week, new games... we'll go a tad softer this week on the difficulty.

-Pick a game from the Pocky & Rocky series. These include Kiki Kai Kai (Arcade, PS2, PCE, FDS), Pocky & Rocky (SNES), Pocky & Rocky 2 (SNES), and Pocky & Rocky with Becky (GBA)

-Power Stone 1 or 2 (Dreamcast, PSP, Arcade)

-Player's choice: pick any game with an alliterated title. Examples might include Fatal Fury, Final Fantasy, Ring of Red, Metropolis Mania, Brawl Brothers, Puyo Pop, Hudson Hawk, Mister Mosquito, etc.

-Import alternative: should you fancy not playing one of these games, any one game this week can be substituted for New Type Action Game Noon on PS1. Note: this is in lieu of a game on the list, not a bonus point.

-RPG of the Month: Vanillaware action RPGs! Much progress is being made on Muramasa, and Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown, Princess Crown, and Grim Grimoire are all calling to you. Or not... but they're worth a solid 5 points!

New standings go up tomorrow evening. Good luck, and straighten out those Nopino Goblins, will ya?!

Man, what a great little title this game was. Gorgeous visuals, a decent length (I prefer shorter games, really), charming characters, good music, the boss fights are all great for the most part. It was a great time from start to finish. The game definitely has a few shortcomings (the swords really don't seem to have any uniqueness, not being able to use your weapon unless enemies are around to name a couple), but the good far outweighs the bad, IMO.

I'm sure I don't Power Stone on any system, but Ki Ki Kaikai might be on a compilation disc. If I complete it, would that count as 2 points, since it also alliterates? :D

Kiki Kaikai is in fact on a compilation disc on PS2. It was the inspiration for alliteration, but in no equation is it under consideration to double its denomination for this situation... hope that doesn't cause undue consternation or frustration, but at least the game can provide some elation.

Also, congrats on Muramasa! ...ation...

The GBA game is really easy, and the first SNES game is tough at the end, but not so rough as Burning Force. Plus, you can sub in Noon instead this week, which isn't tough, and offers unlimited credits. It's weird, but pretty fun.

Nope, but the GBA game is just way less chaotic and gives you pretty fair angles to defend and attack. The first SNES game is a bitch in the late stages for coming at you at tough angles, and is far easier in co-op as a result.

Wait, something like Theatrhyth Final Fantasy is kosher? So, it only needs to have an alliteration somewhere IN the title? Not the entire title?

What's the official ruling on that?

Any words that would not be capitalized in proper titling don't count, such as articles and conjunctions. So, for example, The Legend of Legaia would qualify, as would Ghosts 'n Goblins. Fatal Fury Special, however would not count.

Fatal II is Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. The Crimson Butterfly part might invalidate it, assuming the II didn't, already, but maybe subtitles don't count? It would SUPER SUCK to get pretty far in a game like Fatal Frame II only to discover it's not kosher if that were the only reason you were playing it. On the bright side though, playing through any Fatal Frame game is a reward unto itself! And there are tons of games like Double Dragon and Marble Madness that you can run through in like a half hour or so to make up for it.

Good to hear. I've wanted to play Fatal Frame 2 for a while so this was a great excuse to start it. Wouldn't have been terribly upset if it didn't count because I'm always okay with beating Final Fight again; Definitely one of my favorite games of all time.

In other news I finished Power Stone 2 Adventure Mode. Didn't do arcade mode but seems like the same thing only difference being the ability to bring in items in Adventure mode; which I didn't take advantage of since I do not currently have a VMU. I had never played a Power Stone game prior to this but being both a Fighting game fan, and fan of Sega consoles, I was looking forward to playing one. I was a little disappointed due to my high expectations but the game was still plenty of fun. While it may never be one of my favorite games it still seems like it could be a real blast to play with a group of friends. Could definitely see myself firing the game up again after a few drinks!

Just thought I'd pop in to say I'm still around. I had the flu last week, and not some lousy stomach virus, but full blown influenza. Too sick to even want to play games. I don't recommend it.

Flying through this weeks games. Finished Pocky and Rocky 2 early this morning. Had a blast with this game. I love the occasional top down shooter and bullet hell game, so this was right up my alley. However, I severely question the design choice of stage 8. A spy hunter style stage without strafing? I found myself struggling to shoot and dodge. Especially since the enemies on that stage are all in front of you but every time you dodge left or right you have to readjust. Works fine for the rest the game though due to your free movement. Overall a great game; a good challenge but the endless continues make it more than reasonable.

Finished Power Stone last year and have no desires to revisit it or the sequel.

Pocky and Rocky games ain't for me. Not being able to strafe ruins them. There's no excuse when the snes and gba had shoulder buttons.

Probably takin this week off. Been playing Axiom Verge on the pstv and'll probably focus on that. DS4 controller makes a huge difference. Maybe I'll download Dragon's Crown.

Hey, all...

Just wanted to pop in here and note that I'm following this, but will have very little chance of completing anything. I'm an old dude with very little free time. I have access to most of the games that will be presented here, but have little time due to family, work, soccer coach, etc.

I made it to level 4-1 on Burning Force on MAME, and want to note that I will be following this thread as much as I can just to find new games. My problem is I literally I have access to about 10,000 games (no exaggeration) but I have little time to play them and even less time to investigate which game to play next.

I did enjoy playing Burning Force on Mame and made it up to level 4-1 but ultimately ran out of time.

Keep up the good work of suggesting new games, and my goal is to complete ONE of the games that is presented.

I have officially completed Fatal Frame 2 for this weeks players choice. I was super excited for the chance to play what is regarded as one of the greatest horror games of all time for the first time. Especially since I fell in love with the genre about 5 months ago when I was dealing with some major anxiety issues. Having a way to face fears in a way that was disconnected enough to not cause panic attacks was a huge help in recovering. So any opportunity to tackle a horror-great is incredibly exciting for me.

Fatal Frame 2 definitely lived up to expectations. The game had fantastic pacing, and of course a phenomenal setting. The game did horror in the "right way." By that I mean it relied on atmosphere and unsettling images to scare the player rather than throwing countless jump scares at them. I found myself enjoying the entire game and not just occasional tense moments.

I finished up this weeks games a little earlier than normal; Thanks largely to a blizzard and needing to adjust my sleep schedule for working midnights tomorrow(technically today but that's beside the point). Regardless of the reason for finishing quickly, I had a great time with this weeks games and am looking forward to next week. I may put some more time into Odin Sphere but I'm finding my motivation to continue with the game is dwindling. Starting to feel a little repetitive but I haven't fully lost hope in the game yet.

I BEAT A THING!!!

I beat Rad Racer on NES (obviously)
its only taken 25 years but I never knew that it had a continue option until recently, didn't use a continue till track 8 and then I used ALOT

edit:
I cant remember is it only one game beaten per category per week or could I do more alliteration games to add up on what I've already beaten?

Holy hot damn! Welcome to the score board!

Only one game per player's choice. However, by Friday I'll have a late joiner ruling for new players taking on back weeks for a limited time.

Glad you're having fun either way! Feel free to post in with any thoughts or completions regardless. I realize most of us are adults with families and jobs, so most games posted here can be beaten in 2 hours or less to make participating a little more reasonable. Anyhow, thanks for chiming in!

Biofall- nice on Fatal Frame II. How long did it run? I've only done the first one.

Just thought I'd pop in to say I'm still around. I had the flu last week, and not some lousy stomach virus, but full blown influenza. Too sick to even want to play games. I don't recommend it.

And I started my son on KOTOR, which inadvertently inspired me to play it again, too, so I'll probably be out of the points chase for a while. I'll be back, though.

Glad you're feeling better! You never know, KOTOR may end up meeting the criteria of a player's choice game. Anyway, take care!

I haven't joined late I just couldn't get any thing done in time.

for future reference in games like ridge racer 4 would you be lookin for just credits or completing it with all of the teams?

Biofall- nice on Fatal Frame II. How long did it run? I've only done the first one.

It ran me about 7-8 hours. Was only playing normal mode and died very few times, every death was due to instant kill attacks that items can't revive from. So may potentially run a little longer for some people. Timetobeat website says average is about 9.5 hours. Regardless, it is definitely worth a play if you have the time.

Credits. If you're doing a fighter, beating it with one character suffices as well.

This here is one of the most enjoyable things about it. You can pick one title and stick with it for whatever time you've got that week, whether it be 5 minutes a day or an entire evening. I find it refreshing to read & discuss actual gameplay rather than the usual e-penis threads most forums have evolved into.

And for the love of God, someone please beat Samurai Shodown for Sega CD and lay that urban legend to rest that it locks up at the endings.

So I'm going out of town for about a week and didn't realize that I'd be leaving tomorrow. I generally cram and do my GCC gaming on Saturday, but since I'll be gone I cheesed an easy point playing through the Genesis port of Samurai Showdown.

Man, I forgot how rough this port was. I knew and remembered that they wouldn't have the scaling effects, but there's a lot of frames of animation that seem to be missing, and Earthquake isn't in the game at all, not that I miss him much.

This game has the easiest, cheesiest, most forgettable final boss ever, and really suffers without the voiced samples. The worst part though is that I had to play it on my HDTV with my JVC X'eye because, for some reason I don't understand, the Genesis 6 button controller doesn't seem to want to work with this title on the Retron5. I tried a few different ones and the game just doesn't register them at all. The console does though, because I can call up the system menu with the controller, no problem. Man, this game looks HORRIBLE on my Samsung LCD. I had me realize how much of a godsend the Retron5 really is (for me).

Heheh, yeah, the Genesis and SNES ports both suuuuck on that one. I haven't played those versions in probably 14-15 years other than to show people how bad they stink compared to the Neo Geo AES version. The SNES is permanently zoomed out, and it loses even more in the translation.

I haven't played this game in like 20 years, but I know that Charlette called her opponents 'Plucky'. On the Genesis version it's changed to 'cute'. Also, Kiroshiro says that he's 'going to slice your belly open' in this scene, but he says something totally non-gory in the Genesis port. Urgh.

I wanted to try to complete Kiki Kaikai (I was playing the PC Engine version) before I left, but didn't, but then I discovered that I have the Taito Legends Power-Up collection for PSP, so I'll take it on my trip and see if I can tackle it in the airport or something.

Thought I'd take the week off to gain some compo. Only threat I have is RPA203. Y'all suck and worry too much about which games to pick and dissecting that whole process. Just pick it n play it!

I'm just trash talking. That's always good in competition. There's some lack of that going on.

Player's choice - Final Fight (SNES)

Apparently Dropbox removed its best feature this week and now I can't embed an image, so here's an attachment instead. Also, fxck Dropbox.

With only a few moves this one felt repetitive by stage 3 but thankfully only had 5 stages. Not a terrible game but definitely feels a bit clunky.

Andore's murder-strangle is one of the cheapest moves I've seen in a beat 'em up game. And if he doesn't drain you completely, expect an unavoidable bounce on the head while you're trying to get up.

And the barrels...ugh. Not once did I manage to avoid them.

I played through Aztec Adventure for Player's Choice. I remember liking this game, but it was a bit of a letdown playing it again. I don't think it's a bad game now, but the sometimes poor collision detection made it more frustrating than it should have been.

Heheh, you are way out ahead. I still can't believe some of the player's choice schlock you did. That and RP2A03's game show games are funny as hell.

After a week that saw Niku-sama finally locate the scoreboard, biofall enter the fray, and FieryReign sitting atop the mountain and mocking the field with the powers he gained by beating That's so Raven 2, it's time for some new stuff to play. Some fairly easy but fun clears this week:

-Astro Trooper Vanark (PS1)

-Chiki Chiki Boys/Mega Twins (Arcade/Genesis/PS2/Xbox)

-Player's Choice: Pick any game whose title contains the main character's name. Examples could include Sonic the Hedgehog, Asterix and Obelix, Adventures of Dino Riki, Yo Noid, Shantae, or whatever Thomas the Tank Engine game FieryReign beats this week. :hail:

-Emperor Megas has already taken down Muramasa, and RP2A03 has made steady progress. Any more takers on Vanillaware's back catalog for March?

-Import alternative: players can choose to replace Vanark or Mega Twins with Psycho Dream on Super Famicom. It's a very Valis 3-esque game from Telenet themselves with some cool boss designs. Play something fun. :)

I played through Psycho Dream on Easy (I know it doesn't count) as Ryo to get a feel for it and since you compared it to Valis. Definitely plays like a Valis game, though the hit detection is rougher and there are a lot more cheap hits. Even the girl in the ending scene looks like Yuko. The final boss battle was tedious as hell and the only part of the whole game where the time limit came dangerously close to running out. I'd swear that his arms took a random number of hits to finish off each time. I got his head down to 3 bars at least four separate times before I finally finished him.

Gonna see if I can get through it with Maria on Normal this week.

EDIT: BTW, there's a Chiki Chiki Boys for the PCE CD also.

Cool, first player to test the waters on an import alternative! The Valis feel is what drew me to Psycho Dream. Those have always been flawed, but I've always loved them warts and all (although I've never gotten anywhere on the Famicom Valis).
