#29 makes me think of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? for NES.

#29 sounds like Dick Tracy

You also also get to drive cars, shoot guns, etc... in those games.

Yeah...

#29 is Final Fight, now that I think about it. Mike Haggar for President!

If it's not Final Fight, I wonder if it might be the arcade game 64th Street.

That's it. 64'th Street: A Detective Story. Thinking about it though, I might have accepted Final Fight because it is pretty close. But you don't actually play as a detective right?

Edmond Dantes

Your clue fits 64th Street better than Final Fight--the former is set up as an actual mystery/detective story, Final Fight is not, and no none of the characters are detectives.

Would #28 be The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by any chance? (I've never played that game but the clues about rafting and it having a movie and a book seem to point that way).

EDIT: I just realized #28 could also be Jurassic Park (there WAS actually a rafting segment in the book, plus the spitting makes more contextual sense than it would for Tom Sawyer)

jb143
06-21-2017, 10:25 AM
Jurassic Park is correct. Playing the game when it first came out I remember (as a kid) wondering why there was a rafting scene when there wasn't one in the movie and figuring that it must be in the book(which it is). And those pesky dilophosauruses at the edge of the water keep spitting at you.

The only reason I might have accepted it would be if no one guessed correctly, because when I was making the clues my lunch break was almost over and I hadn't polished that one as much as I would have liked. Afterwards I realized that I might not have provided enough details for there to not be more than one game that meets the description. However, the clue does imply that it's a beat-em-up about detectives. And the first weapons you pick up in the game are a wrench and a pipe. I wanted to work something in about the getaway vehicle at the end being a blimp but didn't want to give too much away(though I did intentionally pick a bit more obscure game), but I didn't have enough time to be clever about it. Oh well...

jb143

Yep. If you take the warp zones to skip over levels, then you just left those poor mushroom retainers(servants to nobility) in those castles. When you beat the game, you are presented with a "new quest".

#30. Hi, I'm just here for the disk. No need to bother getting up. Yes, I brought a friend. No, his name's not Abel, it was Kurt -- or maybe it was Scott? Anyway, he couldn't pull his weight, so he's dead now. I hate the buddy system.

#31. Wait, glasses? I don't remember anything about glasses, or gems, or amulets or scrolls. OK, I found a map, but why can't I see it? I guess one out of three really is bad, not to mention eight out of nine. And speaking of nine, don't go east yet.

#32. Sure, everyone thinks you're so tough, but a thicket of thorns can stop you in your tracks. Plus, how will you fight them if you can't even see them? You lose, nyaah nyaah-nyaah nyaah-nyaah. Keep off the grass!

Nope, but I believe #32 did come out the same year as Ultima III.

Alas, no. This one's an action game -- though oddly enough it has the vaguest whiff of an RPG-like element. (A few of them, actually.)

Nope, #30 isn't Maniac Mansion. The given names are a big hint here.

Correct! Fetch quests galore with glasses, gems, amulets and scrolls. The game tells you that you found a map, but many people don't understand that the map in question is in the manual. And it's Vol. 1 of a projected (but never-released) three games, has only eight of nine playable characters (no Boromir for you!), and allows you to waltz right into the Nazgul's arms if you head east from the starting area despite the game's warnings.

Is 32 Zelda 2?

None of the above, and much more of a "pure" action game. When I said it came out the same year as Ultima III, BTW, I didn't mean the NES version of U3. :)

Hint: who does (seemingly) everyone think is tough?

Yeah I figured you meant the PC version, thus why I was thinking Sierra or Infocom, who would've been in business in 1983.

Right off the bat when I think of "tough" my mind goes to either Rambo, the Incredible Hulk, or He-Man (I know there was a He-Man game for the Commodore 64...) ..... Am I getting warmer?

Bingo! Chuck Norris Superkicks, in which Chuck is confronted by impassable thorns, time-draining grass, invisible ninjas, and a "nyaah nyaah-nyaah nyaah-nyaah" tune whenever he fails in a battle.

It's also weirdly RPG-like in a couple of ways, with a separate overworld vs. battle screen and a kind of leveling-up system where you gain moves and belts as you progress.

Now, #30, let's see...the given names (especially Kurt & Scott) and buddy system are big hints here.

You've got it! Forced buddy system (with CPU-run characters who inevitably get slaughtered), disk-holding bosses you don't actually need to fight, and the notorious "IF YOU ARE NOT ABEL" typo that actually isn't a typo (https://tcrf.net/X-Men_%28NES%29). And of course, Kurt Wagner, Scott Summers, etc.

Guess I'm picking this game up again!

#33 - So.... I just had to rotate a tower to find dates to look at constellations to find out how to raise a sunken ship. Is this normal? Oh wait, I got here through a magic book, so probably not.

#34 - Can you say that again? All I heard was "wub senth, buddont fuhget tear arr guise lie kyoo ah obada whirl."

#35 - Umm, when the only song anyone knows is "la la la la la" how exactly can you tell the good singers from the bad, or for that matter tell an actual goddess from someone who simply has a good singing voice?

Edmond Dantes

Wow, this took you all no time at all. I also like how three different posters managed to somehow solve them in perfect reverse order.

Yes, #33 is Myst, #34 is Street Fighter and #35 is Lunar the Silver Star.

So here's the prizes:

Wulfeluer can come up with questions #36 and #37
Goldenband can come up with #38 and #39
jb143 can come up with #40 and #41

Anyone who doesn't want their prize can give their numbers to somebody else.

I'm having trouble coming up with more because I've been playing mostly Myst lately so I feel like I'll be repetitive. But here's some Bonus Round to give you all some time:

#BR2 - You know what rocks about this game? That you can defeat the villain either by feeding it to a plant or rocketing it thru the sky in a flying car.

#BR3 - Minutes after shooting the food, both players were dead--in the game anyway. In real life, the one who shot the food was probably punched to death by the other player (you all know you've had this situation).

#BR4 - I wander for eternity, eating what I find, while the undead torment me. My only solace is that I may one day find true love. Who am I?

(Admittedly I'm not sure BR3 and BR4 are clear or specific-to-one-game enough but.... let's see how this goes)

jb143
06-29-2017, 06:10 PM

Edmond Dantes

jb14 got BR3 and celery got BR2 and 4.

Damn that was fast.

Okay, so to buy more time:

#BR5 - So by "transform into a fish, lion, or eagle" you actually mean put on vaguely fish/lion/eagle-themed spandex suits that give you the relevant powers.

(I can't remember if the transforms were ACTUALLY labeled "fish, lion, and eagle" BTW so forgive me if my memory is off, but it was always something that struck me as weird about this game)

And I'm too pressed for time but if that gets solved I'll come up with two more. Don't let the other guys forget their prizes!

An interesting thing to find after work.

Anyway, here we go.

#36. So, I wrecked a slave camp, got my village burned down, punched by a dwarf, and ditched by my best friends. Now it's off the desert!

#38. Two sets of Fallopian tubes and ovaries do battle for about as long as it takes the Beatles to play "Please Please Me". Or you could put on that Simon & Garfunkel song -- it'd be very apropos -- and get 2 1/2 games in before it's done.

#39. Well-dressed fellow commits mass murder against...overweight sleds? Or maybe they're lost drones, very far from home? Anyway, once the killing stops, check out the light show, and (repeat after me) have a nice day.

You've got it! And after you get a GAME OVER (when "the killing stops"), you get the attract mode with a nice representation of the Southern Lights. The blob things are Sno-Bees, which is a real-life brand of sled.

Okay, now I'm thinking its.... that one game Yahtzee reviewed, where he started by giving a norse myth lesson about Baldur, who he described as a wuss who called his mom in for everything. Also Norse Myth has the concept of the Yggdrasil or "world tree."

I think the game was called either Too Human or Darksiders.

Yep, BR5 is Totally Rad. Three of your spells are supposed to transform you into animals but the form you take is actually humanoid so it comes off more like you did a Henshin into an animal-themed superhero costume (fans of Tokusatsu shows like Kamen Rider or Super Sentai will know what I mean).

It's also a game I see get dissed a lot even though I thought it was actually kinda awesome.
