I didn't do much game hunting in 2017 but hopefully I can do more this year.

to start off with I got a Greatest Hits ver of GranTurismo for PSX, in really good shape for $2 complete.

might use it to move a system

Good start to 2018. Manage to find Xbox one s cuphead edition at local CL. The guy won the contest from Xbox Twitter give away and decided to sell it so he can get VR gear. Also picked up few games. Not sure why job simulator is rising in price on eBay.

Very Nice Finds @_@

I haven't played Dragon Quest VII for 3DS because I've had a hard time finding a copy in my city, haven't checked on amazon but a few months ago was very cheap

Man I haven't been around these parts in years, it's cool to see there's still some find activity! I'm thinkin about compiling a best-of-finds list from the past couple years and posting it. I got away from video games for awhile and they pretty much stopped showing-up in my town, plus I got hooked on vinyl and that's p much why I stopped posting here. I got a lot of great memories for DP and hope it stays around and maybe someday gets some more traffic again.

one of....the last game store to carry any thing older than current gen stuff suddenly closed and I managed to pick up a random assortment of things I probably would never buy any way.

I got:
Gen model 1 / Master system AV cables
Gen model 2 AV cables
Final Fight (SNES)
DOOM (SNES)
Radical Psycho Machine Racing (SNES)
3x PS2 memory cards
1x PSX memory card
NES MAX controller
PSX multitap
N64 Transfer Pack
Sears Video Arcade II
Altered Beast (SMS) Complete
Shanghai (SMS) Loose
Sonic & Knuckles (GEN)
Game Genie (GEN)
MegaMan Maverick Hunter X (PSP) Loose
StarStrike (INTV) $free

I couldn't tell you how much I spent, it wasn't much. everything started at 50% and quickly jumped to 70%
sadly there was no curren gen or any thing of notable value because everything old $45 and up as well as current stuff was shipped to another store...this was the problem with this store to begin with.

This is not my find but a friend of mine, it is really amazing that I wanted to share it:

Magical Chase with jewel case and manual ... the game costed less than a Chick-fil-a combo

I drove by a thrift I used to love visiting that I haven't been in for some time, and I decided to stop. Good thing, too. Thrift stores are usually so bare it's not worth the effort, but this time I got lucky. Came across a plastic tub covered in cellophane tape with what I noticed was a bare Colecovision on top. Underneath... is that really a Coleco Telstar Arcade? I always wanted one back in the day, so I grabbed it. $29.82 for the whole tub, "as-is". I purposely didn't look too hard into the box because I kind of wanted it to be a surprise for when I got home and opened it. That bare Colecovision had the controllers underneath, along with the Atari 2600 Changer and Driving Controller module. The steering wheel and pistol missing from that Telstar Arcade were wrapped in a bag underneath too, along with cartridge #3 (kind of damaged, I have no idea if it'll work right). There was an Atari Flashback 2 underneath without a power supply. Other than that, everything else has cables and power supplies. There were only common games included unfortunately, but that Telstar Arcade makes up for that. I'm definitely happy.

Awesome find. It's probably been more than 10 years since I've come across anything remotely like that in a thrift store. I remember quite often finding comforter bags wrapped in packaging tape stuffed with game system stuff for around $30. That doesn't keep me from checking thrift stores on a weekly basis though.

After giving it a good look over, I realized that the Coleco Telstar Arcade power supply (a) has what looks like a worn-out cord coming off the wall wart, which is not a big deal since (b) the tip that plugs into the console is missing, there's just two loose wires. And the Telstar Arcade doesn't run off batteries. Guess I need to find a replacement.

I got a tub of black wii at a flea market for $10, its turns on, no disc inside, controller was chewed on my an animal of some sort but hey, it was $10 and gamecube compatible.

I could do the home brew on it since I feel werid about doing that with my launch and black Friday blue consoles

havent posted here in quite some time...but saturday i went to a small independent game store close to me and the owner had a sega game gear he was going to throw out...he couldnt get it to power on.....so he gave it to me for free...however, i did get it to turn on...but for the life of me, it will not read a cartridge...probably bad capacitors...

its the first game gear i've ever owned...also found 8 game gear games at a local pawn shop today along with 9 gameboy games....i paid $50...really not worth listing the games...mostly sports ..nothing to write home about

Nz17

Yeah, I've heard that the capacitors die on Game Gears quite often.

Capacitors are more likely to make the screen dark and I think cause sound issues. Since it does turn on, try cleaning the cartridges and connector really good with isopropyl alcohol and see if that helps. But yeah, either way, there's a good chance it needs new caps.

I stopped at a GameXchange in Shreveport, LA and found a few boxed and possibly factory sealed Japanese Virtual Boy games - the one here was only $12.95. I don't know if it's been sealed after the fact, there's a big gap in the plastic wrap on the back side which makes me think it's been re-sealed. And I bought the Super Famicom F1 game for $4.95 at a place called 2nd & Charles.

That GameXchange had a bunch of loose carts, too. Including Waterworld for $115. The salesperson told me they also got in Jack Bros. for something like $250 and sold it really quickly.

Games sold in cardboard boxes in Japan were almost never sealed in plastic. Somebody definitely sealed it later on.

Steve W

Yeah, I kind of assumed as much. The shrink wrapping isn't really the kind you get on new game boxes, it doesn't seem factory quality. Thanks!

This would have been a weekly type of find a few years ago but since I actually haven't found much of anything lately, I'll post this.

I went to a Goodwill today that charges $1 per pound so this stuff cost practically nothing.
A Zork choose your own adventure book
A Gravis Gamepad Pro
Lego Indiana Jones DS
New Super Mario Bros DS

I also found an Arduino with a few odds and ends that go with it, a webcam, component video cables, night vision goggles(ok, they're basically a toy but they actually work so whatever), and a few other things that I don't remember.

Traveled the past weekend from Monterrey to Mexico City for a concert and I gave myself one day to go hunting VG... things were better a few years ago, the city has dried and no more cheap VG to hunt, the local markets usually have scavengers arriving at 04:00 or 05:00 AM, if you visit a market at 8 or 9am you don't find anything interesting.

Visited a few formal retailers (GAMERS) and nothing interesting for me, visited a few informal stores (Meave and Friki Plaza) where I found a few interesting games but quite expensive. I was interested on Phantasy for SMS for $45USD CIB ... ended only buying Zone of the Enders Limited Edition for PS3 for $33USD NIB :beaten:

That's always been one of my problems. I'm a night person, and I've been working evenings or overnights for decades now. I can't force myself out of bed so horrifically early, so I tend to miss all the good stuff that gets snatched up in the morning. The finds I come across are usually the stuff others overlook.

I have been building my Gamegear collection some...not necessarily finds becauase i used lukiegames.com...but got nba jam t.e., two daffy duck games, mickey mouse land of illusion, streets of rage 2, $60 shipped...not terrible....

Also couple weeks ago picked up the Retron 5 @ gamestop...they had it on sell for $99.99...much better than the $140 it was going for

lets see...nhl 18 about 3 weeks ago...really good game

oh couple days ago picked up marvel vs capcom infinite and persona 5 both on ps4...both complete in Steel Cases. MVC was $15 and Persona 5 was $35 i believe both with the elite membership...

Recently on the Genesis i picked up a 6 button controller, Contra Hard Corps, Lightening Force Quest for the Dark Star, and Castle of Illusion all from jjgames.com

The local Goodwill has been selling Wii remotes with Motion Plus built in for $3 a piece. I picked up a couple but haven't had a chance to try them. They do power up, though so there is hope. One powder blue one has a busted tab for the battery door but once I get my tri-wing screwdrivers I'll swap the bottom with one of my dead remotes.

Now I just have to unearth the Wii from the basement.

fuck Goodwill. They advertise as a nonprofit chain. I don't know what exactly is nonprofitable about taking every video game cartridge that comes through their door and putting it on their own auction website, trying to obtain the maximum amount of profit possible.

Goodwill is basically a pawn shop now. if I were running that company and I knew that a Mega Man X3 came through the door and the "seller" "sold" it to us for $0, I would put it at $30-40 max, knowing that it's still bringing in profit to the store to keep the lights on and pay employee wages. If these scam artists want to be video game resellers, they should advertise that way, and actually PAY people for the product they are bringing them instead of getting rich off old ladies bringing in their dead husband's old games. I will never support their online auction bullshit.

I don't have that problem much at the good wills I am at.

most of the time they list antiques on shopgoodwill and leave electronics out of it. the electronics they do sell they don't get much for.

case in point a few years ago some one dumped a ton of Saturn stuff. most of the games were anywhere between 2 and 8 bucks with probably the 2 they looked up being more.
Panzer Dragoon was $15 and Albert Odyssey was $40 considering complete was about $200 at the time and it had the case but no manual. $40 wasn't bad.

whats odd was they just looked up the two games, the one I really wanted out of the deal was Marvel Super Heroes, it was complete and most of them were $120 at the time and they sold it for $4

was such a strange day

Wow, I never really found much of anything in Goodwills before, apart from a few oddities here and there. Salvation Army stores are the ones where I never, ever found anything of interest in. At least with Goodwill, I've found a bunch of Memorex VIS "games" (at a Goodwill within sight of the Tandy/Radio Shack headquarters, by the way) and at that same location a pristine copy of Shining Force CD for $2.50. So I can't say I haven't ever found anything there. But I can't remember getting anything at all from any Salvation Army location I've ever been to.

It depends on the area and when you were looking. Years ago I found lots of great game stuff at the local Salvation Army near me, then a few years ago it moved to a new bigger building slightly north and it hardly has anything anymore. They're mostly relying on local donations and I guess they don't get many games now. What I was told years ago was that some stores don't get many donations so they get stuff delivered from other stores that gets too many constant donations for them to handle. The stores that are shipping excess stuff keep the best stuff for themselves while getting rid of unsellable garbage to those other locations so it really depends on the location that you shop at.

I know for the Value Village near me all of the clothes are priced and shipped in from other locations, it's just the electronics and housewares that are from donations directly made to this location. I'm not sure how it is elsewhere though.

The closest Goodwill to me was a few towns north of where I am, I found stuff occasionally from them but I can't remember much worthwhile. Actually many years earlier this store used to be at a different location and I did find good stuff there somewhat regularly, but once it moved it just got worse and the pricing increased. Goodwills have all closed down since then.

seeing a lot of signs for garage sales around town lately. been tempted to stop but usually I see them when I'm busy doing something. I'll have to set aside some days and just go garage sailing all day. I'm sure there's a Stadium Events out there somewhere for $2 just waiting to be found

As things were drying up years ago, I found that garage sales were pointless unless you went fairly early. By about 10 I would almost never find anything. Also, a lot of people start them on Wed or Thurs, and you really need to get there on the first day.

My wife goes to garage sales quite regularly and she occasionally finds games. More often than not though, the only gaming related items she comes back with are t-shirts and occasional guides. So I guess it depends on how liberal your definition of "find" is.

I know when we'd have a sale and I'd put a general "video games" in the listing and there would be people fly into the driveway, jump out of their car, run up to us and ask if we had any games left.

Usually yes but not always. A few years ago I went to a sale in my neighbourhood around noon or 1:00pm, I ended up finding a Super Famicom with a floppy based game copier along with floppies, a Game Gear with several games(imports from what I remember), an original Gameboy with some games(possibly imports too), and a modded PS1 with a bunch of backups. All for $20. I have no idea how it was all still there by the time I got there, but I was happy and carried a large box with it all back home as it was that close. The Super Famicom just needed a new video cable, although I still haven't tested the portables yet so they might be broken. It was pretty early in the year for garage sales so that might why.

Also if a place doesn't unpack their boxes properly you can still find stuff. I went to one place maybe around 10:00am and found out they sold a bundle of Atari 2600 stuff right at the start, but I managed to find an original Gameboy with a handful of games for $2 that was buried in a box full of random junk.

I went to one sale in my neighbourhood maybe last year that was advertised as a video game garage sale, all of the flyers basically made it look like it was from a professional dealer. I still went a bit late but managed to find a handful of N64 games for $5 each, and an Xbox for like $10 but it came with the High Definition AV Pack, I think a couple of cheap Wii games too. It seems most people avoided it thinking that there wouldn't be any deals because the ads made it seem like a dealer, but it was just somebody getting rid of his games which were mostly Xbox, 360, and Wii stuff.

I picked up PS1 Rebel Assault II and Halo 3 yesterday at a Goodwill for $4 and $3. There were a bunch of good 360 games, actually (Skyrim, Oblivion, ME, FO3, etc), but they were all games I have and played on PC, and not a system I collect for at all. I only bought Rebel Assault because it was in perfect condition. Turns the copy I have is the GH, so that's a win. There were also a bunch of decent PS2 games, but nothing really spoke to me, I guess I've just lost the collector in me. Wish I'd gotten SW EpIII, but thought I had it and didn't bother to check.

Turns out that they just opened a GameXchange store a stone's throw away from where I work, so I walked over on my lunch break and bought a loose Jawbreaker for the Atari 2600 for $14.95. I'm really happy to see a GameXchange store that isn't an hour's drive away from me.

another town wide yard sale and another bust.

but on the way back I showed a friend a flea market that people run out of a mini storage place (blew his mind) and I got:

Outrun (Gen) $10 Loose - Cart looks brand new
TMNT Tournament Fighters (Gen) Loose $5

I was surprised to find outrun, I was just thinking about rad racer style games

Didn't had a chance to go to flea markets but I stepped into a "frikiplaza", that should roughly translate to otakusquare. That place has many people playing trading card games, has quite a few arcades and gaming stations for rental, anime, Japanese candy and figures.

Found

Zelda Oracle of Seasons, Cart Only, very nice condition: 18 usd.
Pokemon Emerald, cart only, very nice condition: 15 usd.

Saw a few interesting games that I don't own, like Code of Princess, for 22 usd but only purchased those described above.

Cheers, mates.

So my family and I biked around to Art-a-Whirl in the neighborhood today. Used to be a very art-centric thing with open galleries and such, but has sort of exploded in recent years with live bands at the many breweries and restaurants. So on our way from one of the art buildings to the place we wanted to eat dinner (Anchor Fish n Chips) I spotted a shelf with like 5 PS2 games on it at a yard sale. Pretty random that I even looked, because there are quite a few yard sales during art-a-whirl, and luckily PS2 games are pretty easy to spot, because I only caught them at the last second riding by the cars parked on the street. Even so, it was a toss up whether I'd stop or not, with 2 kids and wife following on bicycles. But I did. I don't particularly collect PS2 games, but thought maybe there'd be something else good. Turned out it was a shelf of DVDs, BluRays (probably should have bought xmen and x2), and the ps2 games. Nothing I cared about particularly, but I must have remembered subconsciously to grab the one game I did. With manual and in nice shape. For a dollar. Just looked it up and I guess I did alright and now have the next game on my to-play list...

I picked up a loose Star Strike for the Atari 2600 the other day, I think that's the last M-Network game I needed (outside sports titles, which is no big deal since I won't ever collect them).

Not much to mention yet, just a bit at yard sales:

June/July:

Saw a Nintendo 64 with wrestling games at a yard sale for $80; didn't bother to ask.

July 13:

New Super Mario Bros. (Wii, Complete) - $2 (and I don't have a Wii to test it to sell it on eBay)

July 14:

Gamecube Games:

Harvest Moon (With Box and Animal Crossing Ad; Box is faded)
Namco Museum (Complete, damaged box and insert)
Paper Mario: TTYD (Complete)

$1 apiece.

I sold Paper Mario for $42 (minus shipping) shortly after purchase.

Since I'm thinking of it, I might as well mention that some months ago I was talking with someone who found a copy of Earthbound on SNES for $5 at a Goodwill and promptly sold it for a nice profit. It looks like deals are still around.

Bought a 6 Foot Dreamcast Controller Extension Cable with its box for $0.50, passed on a few DS and Xbox 360 games.

Over the past month or so, my wife has come home from garage sales with maybe 10 games or so. The ones I remember are Mario Kart Double Dash, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Monkey Ball 2, and Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness.

The times I went out looking anywhere I haven't found anything. I think all I got when I went to a used games store recently was a Nyco Perfect Shot Wii gun shell for a couple bucks.

I was walking by a garage sale on Saturday and stopped in. The guy saw my Star Wars T-shirt and asked if I liked star wars stuff, and offered to go look for some he thought he had. I said it probably wasn't worth it, I'm more interested in old video games. He didn't think he had anything like that, but went to find the SW stuff. Eventually came out with a N64 box and a N64 controller box. The system box had all the packaging and such, but mice had gotten in. Looked okay on the outside, and once upon a time I might have tried to salvage something, but I didn't object when he just chucked it in the garbage. The Controller box had a memory pak box in it and all that was in great shape. He let me have it, but I left him a quarter, the only cash I had on me. Lame story, sorry.

It's not too lame, Cornelius. Heh.

I just picked up a surprising haul:

DS Car Power Adapter
Gamecube Controller (Black; I needed this)
Grey Game Boy (The power switch seems to be broken but I don't know)
PS1/PS2 A/V Cable (x2)
PS2 Memory Card
Starfox 64 (Loose)

Game Gear Items:

Carrying Case
System (Not working; battery acid leaked all over the motherboard)
Power Adapter

Games:

Sonic The Hedgehog 2
X-Men (With anti-dust case)

NES & Related Items:

NES Power Glove & Sensors
Regular NES Controller (Dirty)
Hyperkin NES Clone + 2 Controllers
NES Power Adapter

Neo Geo Pocket Color Games (All loose, all except 2 have anti-dust cases: )

Card Fighter's Clash (Capcom Edition)
Dark Arms Beast Buster 1999 (U.K. version? It says "Supported by NGP Color" at the top, is that U.K. exclusive?)
Dive Alert (Matt's Version)
Fatal Fury Contact (American Version)
Evolution: Eternal Dungeons (Import; probably the more common Japanese version)
King of Fighters R2 (U.S. Version?)
Metal Slug: 1st Mission (U.K. Version?)
Metal Slug: 2nd Mission (U.S. Version?)
Pac-Man (U.K. Version?)
Pocket Tennis Color (U.K. Version?)
Puzzle Bobble Mini (U.K. Version?)
Puzzle Link 2 (U.S. Version?)

Total price was, at first, $15; however, the fellow also told me he was into fabricating things and he showed me a good Fallout 3 Shich Kebab he had made (minus the flame capabilities) and I commented "I wonder what you could make with a 50s Hoover Vacuum..." and he mentioned he had an Electrolux; I then mentioned I had a nice 50s/60s Electrolux and he was interested and bought it for $10 (I paid $12 - Edit - I previously thought I paid $13.) I also gave him a bottle of Blueberry Basil Kombucha (though I volunteered that to introduce him to Kombucha.) In total, this haul was $7.50.

EDIT: I may have done better than I thought with the NGPC games. If Evolution were the PAL version I could have struck it rich.

not a lot for this year. I don't bother with garage sales anymore because I never find video games; not even newer stuff like PS2 or Wii.

I did find a guy off Craigslist earlier this month who sold me like 20 xbox magazines for 20 bucks. I was happy with that

Found a Wii with the cables, sensor bar, a controller and 2 of the smaller plug-in controllers with a few other things for $25. Passed on a DSI which was having issues; when I hit the L or R button, it got an error message.

Today, found:

Atari 2600 4-Switch Woodgrain system with the A/C adapter. It seems that some motherboard chips are taped to it (?) - $3
Wii DJ Hero Controller with Tattered Box - $1

I'm starting to think (Edit: Possibly because of Cornelius' post about his Star Wars shirt and find) maybe I should go to yard sales wearing an Atari Tee Shirt and also start hitting Craigslist. It's Monday, I haven't found anything lately but I sold that broken Game Boy for $18.50 with free shipping.

I saw the discussion of Goodwills and Salvation Army stores in the last page. I can't speak for what it's like lately outside my little part of Pennsylvania, we all know 2003-2006 or so was a golden time in yard sales (and I had a good finds in both stores then) but I'll keep the subject in mind for future replies.

13 days since the last find and this is all I got so far:

Yard Sales:

DS:

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue (W/case) - $2.25;
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Eplorers of Darkness (loose, with DS game carrying case) - $2.25;

I'm going to stick these on eBay.

At one yard sale, I saw a Playstation with some common games and a dusty NES (from the original owners) that they were asking $50 for. Keep in mind this is 2 weeks after buying an Atari 2600 for $3 from a man who might have been the original, 61 year old, owner. Some games are still around even if it's sparser and people seem to be holding on to games more lately.

Goodwill:

Xbox 360:

A/V and Component cable - 73¢ (counting tax.)

I might have not been vigilant enough to get there in time, wherever "there" might be.

It's like washing your car and it almost inevitably rains the next day, breaking a dry spell. I totally get it. Good luck!

I went to three different flea markets this weekend - one was such a bust that I was the second car in the entire parking lot - I did find some things. One was this group of Super Famicom carts, from a seller that always has baskets of them for $4.99 each. The second pic is a bunch of Tomy toys from the days before all these newfangled vidya games got so popular with the kids. $13 for the three of them. The two wind-up ones work, I haven't tried out the battery operated one yet.

It seems having my wife go out to yard sales by herself works best for me, since I rarely find anything. This week she came back with a couple GameCube games and one of those giant cloth Legend of Zelda posters.

Steve W, how often do we find imports in the wild? I can think of two instances for me, once being in this thread with the NGPC games; the other time is when I found a Virtual Boy, the stand, controller (with hard buttons from someone spilling soda into it; probably the reason why it was donated but it was easily fixed) and one baseball import for $3 at a Goodwill back in 2005 or 2006. Then again, I'm in rural Pennsylvania over 50 miles from Pittsburgh.

I haven't found anything game related lately, it's all just a bunch of PS2 or PS3 generation games in the stores so I'm keeping my eye open for various games from those generations. My Atari generation coaxial cable adapter arrived from eBay, however, and Father's finding non-gaming items to resell.

I'm surprised I never bought one of these 12 years ago.

Honestly, back in the late "aughts" I used to find imports all the freakin' time in the wild. Seriously, I've come across a couple Japanese Mega CD games (no discs in the case and the flea market vendor didn't speak English so I couldn't get any info where the discs went to), a Japanese Dreamcast (only realized that later because there was a blank cover instead of a modem), many European games for all sorts of consoles, and those are just the ones I've passed on. Nowadays I rarely ever go looking in the wild since there's no point but in the recent past I have bought a bunch of imports just because I know it's something I can't find normally (and especially if it's cheap). The Super Famicom games I bought down in Lafayette, Louisiana at a flea market but I generally find imports around Dallas. I'm always amazed when I come across any of these things. How did a boxed mouse for the Japanese NEC PC-88 line of computers end up in a flea market in Texas? It's only $4? I'll take it, just in case I come across a use for it. These things just seem to flow into this area, and I have no idea why. Do I need a PS1 that's UK only and has a SCART output? No, but it's pretty cool to own it and the games that were donated with it. Especially if they're being sold cheap. I did have to visit all four locations of this local thrift store chain just to find all the games and pieces of the system.

A lot of stores around Dallas have imports, too. Most of the retro game stores have at least a few of them. When the PSP and Nintendo DS hit the market, a chain called Fry's Electronics fluffed out their shelves with Japanese imports for them. That was cool. It's shocklingly easy to come across imports in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Slate

Huh. I suppose you have many more people interested in imports in your part of Texas than I do here. The second time I found imports, I only got them off a fellow from Arkansas who was moving out of his apartment.

Today, I just found:

1 Slim PS2 (no controllers, memory cards or wires; )
1 Wired 360 Controller (Translucent, missing second part of cable; )
1 Wireless 360 controller (Black, missing battery pack.)

Paid $7 from a small thrift store.

Nothing spectacular; everything here's loose.

Atari 2600:

Keystone Kapers - $1

Colecovision:

Mouse Trap - $1
Venture - $1

NES:

Super Glove Ball - $3

Plus tax. I bought these from The Exchange in Monroeville. Not really good enough to be considered a "find," IMHO; they're low priced commons. At least I have something that can use the power glove now, however.

As a footnote, this is the first day I've seen CDI Games in person; I also saw a 3DO game, a Turbpografx-16, Lynx games and four different NES Power Sets all within 2 miles of each other. Nothing, however, was "in the wild."

Edit / Update: I'm heading to a flea market tomorrow, the 25th. Maybe I'll find something at least lower than eBay pricing.
