so I know a lot of people out there are like me. oh heres XXX system for $5 or so and grab it for parts or just because

well i forgot the wii online services are getting shut off at the end of the month so i decided to try and get on some of those spares to see if the previous owner left any points or games on them that can be downloaded.

so far the first one i have tried has:

Cave Story
some Dr Mario online thing
Zelda II
Punch Out
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles My Life As King (?)
Metal Slug 2
Secret of Mana
Punch out w/ Mr Dream

and a few others

You can mod the Wiis and download any Wiiware game you need, which would probably be the only way to preserve these games besides buying dozens/hundreds of consoles hoping to find the games you want.

I think you have to have at least 500 points to do anything with them. I checked my Wii recently to confirm I had everything downloaded and to see if I had any points left, but there's nothing I can do with the 200 points I have left.

Will this affect the ability to softmod the wii with homebrew channel?

If you don't have it already, you might want to pick up the patch for Skyward Sword while it's still available... just in case you get the game at some point.

Are there any other games like that?

Are there any other games like that?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 requires a patch to unlock survival mode (and online play).

Thankfully, all of this downloadable content has been ripped and is out there for the future.

Soft-modding Wii's with home-brew and CFW (custom firmware) should continue to work without any problems. These can be accomplished via the Letterbomb or Wilbrand hacks (https://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_setup#Letterbomb) which are simple to execute. Letterbomb is the simpler to achieve as all it requires is a Wii (with an SD card) that can browse the Internet that can go to the Letterbomb Web site. But even if your Wii can't go online, then you can still use the Wilbrand technique which is basically the same except you run the preparatory software on your computer first and then copy the files onto your Wii's SD card.
