View Full Version : Favorite Game Music Piece?

Nothing enhances a great game like great music to go with it. It's truly one of the things that have spoiled modern gamers -- while games pre-NES did have some music it was few and far between. For a long time not reconized as being an important aspect of a good game, that has recently changed, and game music is growing in popularity.
Some games have music so bad you hit the mute button and listen to something else. Others are so good you race out and buy the soundtrack. Nothing makes the fun factor of a shooting game better then a drving hard metal sounding track, or a college football game with the actuall school fight songs, or a RPG matching the sad moments with fitting music and the battle scenes likewise.
Here's the challenge -- if you had to pick ONE musical piece of all time as being your favorite, which one and why?
I really had to think about this one for a while, as so many good games have such wonderfull music -- Gradius, Castlevania, Final Fantasy -- in the end, I picked one not just because of the song itself, but how well it blended into everything else going on.
Dancing Mad from Final Fantasy VI.
For those who have played the game -- the final boss fight music. That's all I should need to say. :D
For those who have'nt -- in very basic terms, the main objective in FF 6 is to defeat this crazy bad guy named Kefka (who would also get my vote for 'best bad guy in a video game') before he destroys the entire world. He's insane, pure evil, and delights in causing death and destruction. Heck, he destroys the world just to gain more power, and that power makes him a god. But your party fights on, determined to defeat him, and finally you reach his tower.
First you have to defeat three statues, which look like angels, that are a lot of his power. Finally you can bring everyone together and assign your order for the final fight. You rank people so you have the main line and then who backs them up in case someone falls.
The Dancing Mad piece starts as you do the first part of the multi stage battle -- aganist one of the statues you previously defeated, only mutated. It's at the base of a 'tower' like creature, and very mean looking. After you defeat it, the screen shakes and moves up to the statue, and then on to the third. Each statue has a 'unique' part of the Dancing Mad song. The whole song has a very 'church like' feel and sound to it, with organs and harpiscords and flutes. Adding to the feel of the music is the intense fighting, where you unleash everything you saved all game, the great graphics (for the SNES, VERY good), and as party members die and get replaced by weaker people in your group.
Finally you break above some 'clouds' and find Kefka looking like a angel, complete with the sun beams in the background, and the forth and last part of Dancing Mad starts. He taunts you, you rumble, and finally you kick his sorry ass into death, which starts the ending of the game.
The whole song is about 10 minutes long, and made fantastic use of the very good sound chip the SNES had.
Pure. Musical. Bliss
If you have'nt listened to it, do yourself a favor and find a copy online. Even better, there are at least two orchastral versions of the song that I know off -- the best one, I think, is included in the recent Final Fantasy Battle Mages soundtrack. As good as the song itself is, these versions somehow crank it up even another notch.

One piece, eh? Okay, here's my pick:
Vampire Killer (stage 1) - Castlevania - NES
I'm sure that this may sound kind of cliched, but it really is my favorite piece of game music. This was the first piece I heard that really stuck with me (even more so than the SMB theme and Pitfall II's theme), and it still does to this day. Sure, there have been some fantastic remakes and remixes of this piece (namely Akumajuo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo's version), but the original is still the best, imo. It's simple, it's classic... it's just great.

The Great Fairy Fountain theme from Ocarina of Time on the N64. In all seriousness, I used to go to a fairy fountain, and just sit listening to that theme (not to mention marveling at those hot, hot fairies... hottest video game babes ever... ).

I certainly can't pick just one.
On the shore bordering another world - from chrono cross is absolutely excellent. It's the overworld music in the alternate dimension. I bought a sampler CD just to have that song.
Chimayouru (kanji i can't read) - from Akumajo Dracula X. I actually own the full soundtrack to this one it was full of great music. this is the piece that plays when you're fighting your way through the colliseum/arena area. It's a great kind of 70's guitar/spanish guitar kind of thing. Just awesome.
Other excellent pieces from this game include (the piece that plays when you're first walking into the castle....has wind howling in the background) and (the heavy electric guitar piece where you're outside on top of the castle, fighting those giant skulls).
Most of the "character themes" from Chrono Trigger were excellent, most notably Robo's and Frog's.
Personally, I usually love a good deal of the music from all the Final Fanatasies, so it wouldn't be right to name any of it. Noubuo Uematsu is my god.
The music in Metal Gear Solid was extremely fitting, especially when you were spotted.
I love DDR music, but it probably doesn't really count. Likewise to the music in Mad Maestro...i knew most of it long before I ever played the game.
Man, there's just so much I could list, but i think I should stop for now. What a great topic.
EDIT: Right, so the DP boards didn't like my hiragana and kanji (though I can use them in my forum title...hmmm), so I put descriptions in parentheses instead.

Well, I can't really narrow it down to a single song, but for best music overall, Drummania 5th mix wins. Incidentally, it's also my favorite game of all time.
Also, I'm still amazed by the audio Konami was able to pull off with NES games. I don't think any other company knew how to use the PCM/noise channel better.
And if you want to get Japanese characters to work correctly in PHPBB, you'll probably have to force the page encoding to Unicode or Shift-JIS before you enter your message.

I like the Rock track on the Zombie Stage(level 2) of Metal Slug 3 on the Neo Geo. That song gets me so pumped up, and it fits so perfectly with the nonstop frenetic action of that level. ROCK!!

Main opening theme from Secret of Mana. Wonderful...still sends shivers down my spine.
Halo has some awesome music, used very sparingly but effectively.
I also always loved the music in the Donkey Kong Country underwatch level, the Big Blue level on F-Zero and most of the music in Axelay.
But the game with possibly the best overall music I've ever heard might have to be Pop 'N Twinbee for the SNES. Great stuff, tragedy that it was never released in the US.

I second secret of mana.
I did have some music I really enjoyed from Donkey Kong Country. I think my favorite stuff was from the industrial levels. I want to say there was a level called Fear Factory (don't want to dig out my copy right now) that had great music.

FF7-The piece where Aeris dies, it always moves me. I can not help but get a tear to my eye. The CGI that goes with it only adds to the piece. This is what gaming music should be like.

"Birth of the People" by Yuzo Koshiro. You know what I'm talking about. In the desert stage, where the people discover music for the first time.
PS: In Actraiser for the SNES, that is :D

Maybe I am just a bit emotional when it cames to music. To me some times
the visual ads to the piece. There is this so called kids flik called "The Last Unicorn" whose next to final scene is where the knight scarafices himself
the give the lone still free unicorn enough courage to battle the Red Bul
which has imprisoned all the others. The music in that scene along with the visuals even not brings me to tears.
You can not tell me the opera scene in I beleve is in FF5 does not bring some emotion. To me it matters not wither it is CGI or some music video or even a trgic scene set upon some stage. Music=emotion

Wow....this is a tough one. However, I'm going with Double Dragon II on the Duo, the ending credits theme. It's a remix of the original DD theme played with an electronic keyboard. Outstanding.....but there are so many more. The final Stage in Contra III on the Super when your fighitng the teleporting bat thingy is undoutably one of the best on the console and Actraiser really set a standard. I'll also second everyone here who mentioned Dracula X. I pop it in sometimes just to listen.

The soundtrack of Super Metroid amazes me. I find myself humming and whistling ALL the time when I play that game.
In the Bemani department, my favorite DDR song is Afronova, IIDX is probably G2, Guitar Freaks is Happy Easter! and Pop'n Music is 100 Sec. Kitchen Battle.
I also really like Captain Falcon's theme in F-ZERO GX, which is odd, because I normally don't listen to rock music very often.

psst.....the opera scene's in FF6.
But yeah, I remember seeing the last unicorn. Very tragic animated movie. Even the opening theme to that movie (the one written by America) makes me extremely sad. I downloaded it about three years ago, and still have the original mp3.

Whenever the topic of favorite game music come up, these five always bounce around in head..which is why I can never pick one :P
Outrun: "Magical Sound Shower"
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood "Bloodlines" and "Overture"
Contra: base stage music- gets you pumped for some alien blasting
Axelay: second stage- I love how it kinda bubbles low and then explodes into fanfare.

Ooo. Hard to pick just one. Here's some I can think of:
8-bit: Opening music to SMB 2- I was blown away when I got this game and I could listen to the music all the time. Still can, even in its original NES format. Too good.
16-bit: Legend of Zelda Link to the Past Dungeon Music- the fact you could tell that the string music WAS string music was great and the music had a more urgent effect, like danger WAS eminent.
Greater than 16 bit: oh, lot's of 'em. The Poo stage and "Saving Private Ryan" levels in Conker's Bad Fur Day, the opening sequence to Castlevania 64 (the fade to the violin still sends shivers) and good for starters.

No way I can pick just one. Even more oddly, all mine come from Gameboy(?!)
-Legend Of Zelda - Link's Awakening - I love the opening music here, particularly at the part where Link is found washed up on the beach. Lovely use of MIDI.
-Nobunaga's Ambition - The in-game, during turn music. I catch myself humming it quite often.
-Revelations: The Demon Slayer - Opening track. Good stuff again.

Hong Kong Streets from Deus Ex.
MedSci from System Shock 2.
The original Legend of Zelda music.
I would agree with Valley of Gerudo, too.
The town music from the original Heroes of Might & Magic.
Guitar riff from the select screen of Gauntlet Legends.
The Fellowship music from Ultima 7. Also music from Ultima Underworld II.
Almost everything from Symphony of the Night.
I like Metroid II's main theme, too.

Anything Castlevania. Vampire Killer is definately on top (Dire pretty much put in words what I wanted to say), with Bloody Tears just behind that, and Clockwork at #3. Also, Aquarius, Wandering Souls, Sinking Old Sanctuary, Cross Your Heart, Wicked Child, Dwelling of Doom, Pressure, Clockwork, Stream, The Tower of Dolls, Etude For the Killer, New Messiah, Calling From Heaven, Opposing Bloodlines, Dracula's Castle, The Tragic Prince, Rainbow Cemetery, Festival of Servants, Death Ballad, Catacombs, Lament of Innocence (Leon's Theme), and a whole bunch of other tunes that I don't remember the name of or that I'm forgetting entirely. Whew. I LOVE CASTLEVANIA! :rocker: :whip: :hail:
Disclaimer: I'm sure at least one of these tunes above is misnamed. :above me:

No, you got them all right...
I'm going to go on a limb here and here are a couple tracks I've enjoyed quite immensely:
To cover the CV side and be done with it, I'll name a couple more:
Vampire Killer from the MSX2 Akumajo Dracula is OK, but it's missing a few things the NES had and sounds much more primitive. It just doesn't have "it."
Dracula Battle - Akumajo Dracula SFC/Super CV IV SNES
Thrashard in the Cave/Wiched [sic] Child/You Goddamned Bathead from Akumajo Dracula (Sharp x68000)
Cross your Heart, Basement Melody (unfortunately it never plays through in the arcade version, as far as I can tell..!) and Don't Wait Untill Night- Haunted Castle (1988)
Dracula X SNES--the whole darn soundtrack (much cleaner sound than the CD version, which I've played so many times in my CD player that I'm about to wear out the disc) but the credits music which is called March of the Holy Man, I believe, is awesome.
Lots of stuff from the N64 CVs, including Tower of Science and Tower of Sorcery
Other stuff...
Bionic Commando/Top Secret, level 2
Konami's Aliens (1990) level 1 (and the rest, but level 1 especially)
Contra 3/Contra Spirits - Neo Kobe Steel Factory
Chrono Trigger - main theme, Ruined World, Manoria Cathedral, and Delightful Spekkio for having the funniest name ever
Plok - the whole soundtrack is a technical marvel, really.
Super Metroid - Story, the (unfortunately apparently never *.SPC'd) Space Colony klaxons and stuff (you know, the game really had much more potential to be scary and intense; a shame they didn't really go that way)
Revenge of Shinobi - Terrible Beat, China Town, The Ninja
Shinobi 3 - primitive use of the sound hardware compared to RoS/Super Shinobi, but still some great compositions: Whirlwind, Idaten, Trap Boogie, Rush and Beat 'em (using the beta's name for that track there, it changed at least a few times until the final version), Solitary, Mandara, on and on...
Phantasy Star - various battle music, spaceport music
Space Harrier
Shinobi - first stage, bonus round and boss music
and finally
Getfusuu Maden (Legend of the Lunar Wind, I believe) - Overworld music (also found in Wai Wai World, aka Konami World)
Which just about sums things up for stuff I've been enjoying recently.
I have found, though, that you can wear out even the best music if you loop it ad infinitum, but I just go on to other stuff. Even though my ears have become jaded, though, I can tell that these are indeed good songs and worth a listen.

Metal Slug 3: Zombie stage music

Super Mario Bros 3-King Koopa battle
Sonic 3-Carnival Night Zone

Don't ask a game music fan to pick just one; that's just cruel. :P I confidently say that my favorite composer is Motoi Sakuraba, and I can not-so-confidently say that Chrono Trigger is my overall favorite soundtrack (which oddly enough is not by Sakuraba nor do I own this one o_O ).
As for one single song... geez... I guess I'd pick Sakuraba's "Star Ocean FOREVER". How it does it, I don't know, but somehow it manages to capture all of the magic and emotion of the Star Ocean series in one little song. It's just the complete embodiment of it. I first heard the song in Star Ocean 2 after completing the Cave of Trials. After all the hours I spent on that AMAZING dungeon and after beating the extremely difficult Gabriel, the song kicked in and it was just... wow... Running up through all the floors, all the enemies gone, my glorious victory being enhanced by the song, I was in a complete euphoria. Few games have ever made me that happy, and few songs have done that too. That was when I realized that I LOVED Star Ocean, and everytime I hear "Star Ocean FOREVER" I smile. :)

Super Metroid-All of the music set the mood for this game
Grandia-The 2nd Battle Music
Lufia II-Sinistral Boss Music

Damn! Hit Post prematurely. I'm not finished!
The Great Fairy Fountain theme from Ocarina of Time on the N64. In all seriousness, I used to go to a fairy fountain, and just sit listening to that theme (not to mention marveling at those hot, hot fairies... hottest video game babes ever... ).Actually, they used to freak me out when I would play Ocarina. LOL
One of my absolute favorites is the "Ballad of the Windfish" sung by Marin in Zelda: Link's Awakening. I used to be able to listen to it all the time, and loved when you got the final instrument and it played the whole thing in front of the egg. Pity you could only hear the whole 8-piece version once per game.
The DKC series has a ton of the best music. DKC2 is the top one, though. I especially like the castle themes (Mainly from that level where the floor rises.) Also, K. Rool's theme from the first game. And the underwater levels from DKC2. Also, the industrial level (Particularly the one with the fireball shooter owl's) music is awesome.
DOOM music always gets me going too. Especially the first level of DOOM 1. It sets the mood. And DOOM II's level 1 music is equally as good. But DOOM 1 has the best. But I love the Wolfenstein levels music in DOOM II.
There's more, but too much to think of right now.

You guys are talking about the shooter not the TwinBee platformer Rainbow Bell Adventure, right? I have the shooter, and I never really thought the music was very memorable, just typical happy, cheerful stuff. o_O I better give a closer listen next time I play. :)Whatever game this site has:
http://classic.gamingfm.com/
Go to the Live Requests page, choose Pop 'n' Twinbee and go to the Live Playlist to wait for the song. You can apparently choose two. (You need an Internet Music capable player like iTunes or WMP. It's a really cool site. Also has Modern and PC music versions available. This is just the Classic section. I'd love to have their MP3 library.

Ahh...this is a hard choice... I have to choose a piece that I like and also must be very memorable for me...
I think "Simon's Theme" from Super Castlevania IV (SNES) would be my all times favourite piece, I love all the soundtrack of that game, my personal favourite CV soundtrack, and that song is just beautiful.
Another memorable tunes for me: SMB3 World 1 theme, Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears (of course :P), Sonic 1 Green Hill Zone, SMW Forest of Illusion, the original Twin bee theme...

Hopefully I can get the SotN OST this weekend. Anyhow, i love most the Vampire Killer remixes, most anything from the FF games too. Chrono trigge rhad some great tracks, one my favs is still the 600 AD theme. Xenogears..what can I say, the music enhances the emotional impact, especially the ending theme.

Forgot Super Mario RPG. Damn fine music from the Nintendo and Square people. Sad they probably won't be together again. I'd love a real Mario RPG 2. Oh well, M&L and PM 2 will do for now.
Specifically Geno Wakes and the ending and Smithy's two themes and ooh... Culex. I LOVE Culex's theme.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the music in "berserk" for dreamcast was good. That game had a great score for a beat'um'up. LOL

My favorite song is Simple and Clean from Kingdom Hearts. I first heard it on the commercial and have been hooked ever since.

Cool, this thread is back.
I think DDR would count for this, so in addition to what I've already said, I'd like to add a few DDR songs. Dam Dariram, Bumblebee, Tsugaru, A, and Sakura are my faves from that.
I'm kind of surprised that I didn't see the Tetris tunes in this thread. I might have just missed them. Song C in the NES version is a great tune, and I've had it stuck in my head for weeks at a clip.
Also, those Final Fantasy tunes are really getting to me, like Liberi Fatali. Great stuff right there.

Anything that Hirokazu "Hip" Tanaka has had his name associated with.
Especially the title screen music in "Mother."
As far as modern stuff goes, I thought that "Metroid Prime" had some very effective music.

"To The Savior of Those On Earth" -Lufia II, the music that plays when escaping Doom Island after the last battle.
"Bloody Tears" -In the following CV games: Simon's Quest, Super CV4, Dracula X Rondo of Blood. The Famicom Disk Version of this tune on Dracula 2 (JP Simon's Quest) is terrible.
The following Final Fantasy 7 tunes:
- "Still More Fighting"
- "One Winged Angel"
- "Jenova Absolute"
Megaman Music - Rockman and Forte/Megaman & Bass' robot master music. My number 1 favorite in the whole MM series period
Various Famicom music that never made it outside Japan.
-The title screen music of Jaleco's "Youkai Kurabu"
-All the music of Chronicles of the Radia War
-Lagrange Point, for the fact that it sounds 16-bit on a 8-bit system.
-The second stage of Rupin Sansei/Lupin the 3rd: Pandora no Tsue. It sounds Tecmo-ish.
