TRON 2.0 seems to be a game built on the UT2k3 engine, though it moves faster on my gf4ti4200 then a stock UT2k3 world. That being said it looks and feels really solid! The game does the world of TRON more justice then any game in the past, even Disc's of TRON. The story is based in today but many old favorites are back including Alan 1 (voiced by Bruce Boxleitner) I was hoping that Flenn would be the lead when I first heard about the project. Guess they couldn't get ol' Jeff Bridges to put down that bottle long enough to do a project.. Anyway 20 years after the original story
Alan Bradley, creator of the original Tron program, has finally replicated the technology needed to successfully digitize a human being into the computer. The secret lies in Ma3a, an artificial intelligence program sophisticated enough to hold within its memory the complete genetic makeup of a human being, and the correction algorithms required to safely restore one to the physical world.
Unfortunately, Alan’s company is on the verge of a corporate takeover. Future Control Industries (fCon) has learned of Alan’s discovery and is interested in the technology for their own nefarious purposes. By digitizing specially trained hackers codenamed DataWraiths, fCon plans to infiltrate the world’s computer networks from the inside.
When Alan suddenly disappears under mysterious circumstances, his son Jet, a talented young computer programmer, enters the world inside the computer in search of answers. He discovers a sinister plot spinning out of control that threatens to corrupt one reality and forever transform another.
The game doesn't beat around the bush with the intro story like Half-Life did.. there are no widgits to push to start the game. The game, though FPS combat based at it's heart, is much more of a puzzle/adventure exploration game. Taking you threw the story at hand in the digital world. Although I didn't read the manual, I will say that some tinkering will be needed just to understand all the little tricks you can do by upgrading yourself. Like jump upgrades and such. There is quite a bit of looking for this or that to trigger this or that to get this or that to open this or that to get to.. etc. The story flows nicely and I only found myself getting bored in one spot around 3/4's the way threw it. This is a story drivin game for sure and it works.
Now lets talk about the one part I really felt was well beyond and worth the price of admission. Lightcycles. This game does Lightcycle comps better then i thought they could be done. The game grids are not just boxes (though they can be) but things like powerups like WALLBREAKER and LIGHTSPEED have been added which really makes for some last minute strategies. Also on the grid floor are color coated areas. Green area's make you travel twice as fast, red make you crawl along (which isn't always a bad thing if you are trapped.) Controls are what you would expect, LEFT RIGHT.. but you always can go faster by holding up or slow down with the back arrow. The camera can be moved around and even unlocked from the cycle's current direction though if you want to win you can't use the "fun" camera's.
Great game!! I give it a 8 out of 10.
Gameplay:
Feels like playing Disc's of Tron 20 years later.. sweeter then Yoohoo. 8-)
Graphics:
well at the par of todays current video card Tech. perfect TRON feel.
Sound:
Though the sound effects are those of the TRON movie, they just didn't quite get it perfect. A de-rez doesn't sound quite like it did in the film.. But hey, this is 20 year's later and the system is not the same. Also the game needs a special MP3 CODEC so if you have a MP3 CODEC already installed.. guess what, the sound won't work when you first install the game. So you have to uninstall your old CODEC and run a program on the second disc. This technical issue lowered my score on the game as the install should ALWAYS be a no brainer.. and as a video producer, what if my home system had a CODEC that some other productive software needed?
Story:
Great stuff! Though the intro was so short, I guess I've been playing to many RPG's lately lol.
Lastability:
Multiplayer will last you as long as your skillz stay up. People are getting extremely good at the disc arena's and cycle comps. I noticed no LAG in the online engine. So you can't blame the perverbial bent cue stick.
