That's cool news, I am glad to see ATI in the console market, I have always been a fan of their Graphics cards in the past. :)

lol, actually you have.. the flipper chip powering the Game Cube is ATI..

This was a smart move for ATI as Gamecube isn't selling enough to keep them from having to stop production on chips. Hell.. Nintendo hasn't been producing gamecubes for a couple of months until warehouse stock is gone.

Basically this means that Xbox 2 will have a 9800 pro in it.

Would this nix any kind of backwards compatibility that may have been conjured up in the past between the current Xbox and the what was potential NVidia/Xbox 2 system?

Nope, the Xbox is a PC, the next Xbox will also be a PC.. with a different video card.. Just a few drivers to change.

Nvidia also took a hit with Gamespot's recent benchmarks of Half-Life 2. Although they say that the new drivers will significantly improve performance, if I am a customer looking to buy a video card, this makes my choice a little easier.

The word is that Nvidia dropped Image Quality to improve performance with the next line of drivers.. Nvidia is in big big trouble..
