Which it does. I like the fact that some of the sizes of the games are absolutely HUGE. I do believe some of the sizes compare to PSX games (up around 700 MEGS)

700 Megs in cartridge-speak (courtesy of the Japanese) is 700 million bits...so divide that figure by eight to get its size in bytes, and at roughly 87.5 Megabytes, that doesn't measure up to a PSX game in size at all.

I know what you're saying and I agree for the most part, but I have LOTS of PSX games that occupy less than 87.5 MB of disk space.

It seems to me that your standard PC fare from 1993-1996 -ish with CD audio fared about the same (Quake was what, somewhere in the range of 50-100MBytes if you count out the CD audio). That said, Neo Geo carts are still a whole lot bigger than the other more contemporary cartridge media N64 or GBA cartridges (and were back when those systems were new, too). How big were Neo Geo carts around 1997, anyhow? I can't remember, they're somewhere around 300-400MB, right? That's 50MBytes right there, still edging out Quake and looking mean for Quake 2.

OOPS!!!i Didn't know it was "bits", I was under the misconception that it was "bytes" But I still stay firm with my belief that the Neo Geo is still a superior systerm compared to even the newest systems. True, the games lack a lot of length and *oomph*, but I still like the fact that I am playing a system that has stayed strong since I was a wee little tyke.

You might get a lot of arguments from the regs here. Might. But not from me :D

Yes, Neo Geo > all the next gen systems. By a LONG shot.

Hear, hear! It's too bad I don't have a lot of room for any more consoles, but I have to get one for the future. :)

What's the largest game on the NG? Is it KoF 2002? That's what I heard...

Metal Slug 3, SvC, and SS5 clock in at 708 megs, which I hear is the max for a Neo cart.

Which is more than double the original specs, MAX 330 Mega. I even have a brochure from SNK that states " hardcore hardware designed to crank out an amazing 330 megs of incredible power"....or how about this one for fun, taken from the same brochure "Simply stated, NEO-GEO gives you incredible four-dimensional graphics(? :hmm: ), nearly life size screen characters, and a 'need-to-hear-it-to-believe-it' 15 channels of stereo sound, including seven channels dedicated solely to real-voice speech!"

Oh and why not, how prophetic is this one? In short, NEO-GEO delivers a state of the future "in-your-face" realism-- the kind of addictive entertainment value that will keep you coming back for more"....Oh yes indeed!

Gotta love those hyperspacial graphics! Oh boy, I never realized that I am actually only 6 inches tall... Holy crap, I've been living a lie!! Oh the humanity!

But I do like that last phrase. It DOES keep one coming back for more. I know it does with me!

Wasn't KOF 98 bigger then that? I coulda sworn it was over 800 megs...

Okay, now you bastards have me wanting one. I need to learn about the variants. Please verify or refute what I think I know about it:

The AES is a home cart console with CD addon.
The MVS is the arcade pcb which comes in 1, 2, or 4 slot.

The MVS is the superior of the two but far more costly.

The CD addon suffers from horrible read times.

The system's library is populated by a much larger than usual % of fighters.

The CD (and CDZ) systems are standalone, not add-on. AES is cart only.

MVS is also available in 6 slot. See www.hardmvs.com for details.

MVS is usually a bit more expensive to start with, but has cheaper games. MVS boards were never intended for use 'out of the box' as a home system, so you need to do the supergun thing (or find a cabinet).

Yes, there are a lot of fighters. Lots and lots of fighters.

I have a full jamma cab and today am picking up a jamma cocktail, so mvs may be the way I go.

For someone who is not into fighters, what else is there and is it worth it?

Hey, we've come full circle! I know this question was addressed earlier on in this very thread. Back up a few pages!

FWIW I wouldn't own a Neo-Geo system if it weren't for the fighting games, but that's just me. There are some great non-fighing games on the system but other than the Metal Slug series, nothing I'd personally buy a system for.

If I knew anyone that had one that I could use, I'd probably agree. As it stands now, I may end up buying an mvs board eventually just to experience it. If I could experience the real hardware then I'd probably just emulate the few games I want to play (I'd really like to play the Baseball Stars games).

Well, why not go looking for a system, buy a kit or buy a new cabinet?

As an owner myself, I'm in total agreement with that. If it just had the Metal Slug series, I would consider it an expensive rarity and something to get only when I felt like blowing the money. I probably still would get one (I like the MS series more than the fighting games) but it would be considerably less important to me.

A major reason I got one was the intro to the original Samurai Shodown. Back in 1995 and without a home console, that had me floored.

Personally, the reason why I like the Neo-Geo system was because of Aero Fighters 2. That game ate SO many of my quarters, I know I made the arcade owner rich. That game repeats and repeats and repeats all the time... I dont think it or its sequel have true endings. Although I could be wrong.

Yeah, I dig the Sonic Wings(Aerofighters) games as well, I just have a soft spot for overhead vertical shooters. I have Sonic Wings 3 homecart, and that game is fucking hard. Only thing is about this one, is that the bosses come up too quick, making the stages short. But it does have 10 characters to use, plus I think 2 or 4 secret characters. And the dialogue is just ridiculous, if you play this game sometime you'll be like WTF? when the characters talk between stages. SW3 has killer music and great sound fx especially for the explosions...it has great explosions!

This going to be blasphemy to some, but I think SSV is better than SS2, though 2 is a great in in of itself. But right now my current favorite is Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Lots of fun characters + tight gameplay + eyecandy = gold, Jerry! Gold!
