This is my first time posting on here... please don't flame me if this is in the wrong section.

My local arcade is selling me their Neo-Geo MVS cabinet and it, I think, comes with Bust-A-Move Again and Metal Slug X. However, I am sure I can get him to buy me more cartridges. (Assume that I give him the money and that he is just a proxy buyer.) Especially since I will be working there after the holidays, if all goes well.

My question is, what games should I get for this? And why exactly these games?

chadtower
11-14-2003, 12:15 PM
How much did you drop for the cabinet? That's a sweet, sweet pickup. How many slots on the board?

DarkSol
11-14-2003, 12:36 PM
Um... well, I am ploping down around $600 for it. Well, it has 2 slots, but he says it's JAMMA connected, so I am assuming that I can disconnect the Neo-Geo board and play other JAMMA games with it.

chadtower
11-14-2003, 12:39 PM
Yeah, and you can put a multijamma board in there and play BOTH jamma boards and the neogeo board with a selector. Is $600 the going rate for a neogeo cab? For some reason it sounds kind of high to me.

DarkSol
11-14-2003, 12:53 PM
Well, I think the price includes the two carts that it now has inside. (Metal Slug X and BAM: Again) And I know that this guy takes great care of all of his machines. I've seen him open these things up, minimal dust and ickyness.

You're getting raped, I've seen mention of average prices around 400 or less for a Neo cab. 600 is what you pay for pinballs. ;) How much is a MVS Metal Slug usually? 50?

DarkSol
11-14-2003, 12:57 PM
Actually, I'm not. Metal Slug X goes for about $125 and im not sure about Bust A Move Again.

But i just looked up for a Neo Geo 4 slot cab, its about $1000... so take two slots off... and have the games included... $600 sounds about right...

Achika
11-14-2003, 01:02 PM
Actually, for the 2 slot and those two games it might be right on.

Anyhow, check out www.mdgamesales.com and see if he still has some MVS games for sale, as he's very resonable in price.

You're not going to get flamed at all, but I am going to shuffle this over to the Videogame Forum and you'll probably get more responces.

Raped!! RAAAAPED!! Oh fine.

chadtower
11-14-2003, 01:09 PM
Well, let's look at this in a cumulative way.

A jamma 19" cab with good, working monitor and controls: $150

Neo geo 2 slot pcb: $170

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3250632816&category=13716

Metal Slug X: $70

http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?query=metal+slug+x+neo+geo&ht=1&sosortproperty=1&sorecordsperpage=50&from=R10&BasicSearch=

Bust a Move again: $75

http://www.coinopexpress.com/products/pcbs/neo_geo/Bust_A_Move_Again_2414.html

Total: $465

And that's only counting if you buy everything separately. So basically, the $600 is pretty high. It's not ridiculous but this guy certainly isn't doing you any favors. You're the one doing him a favor. Keep that in mind.

Lovin' the Chadtower action!!!1

Is the guy taking care of transportation fees, also, or do you have to pay/handle that yourself?

DarkSol
11-14-2003, 01:15 PM
True, but who knows if those auctions will go for higher or not? Besides, if I hold out, I heard him mention that he was going to put SNK vs Capcom in there. THAT'S when I'd buy it for that price! MUHAHAHAHAHA! :P

Have FUN with it! It's pretty easy to find JAMMA PCB's and there are a number of collectors here that can help direct you.

Welcome to the forums.

You make it sound like we're insulting him over it. We're not, we're just discussing the price. I'm just getting into arcade hardware myself so that research was as much for my own benefit as his. I'd love to have a neo geo cab myself and have been pondering adding a multijamma and a neo geo pcb to my cabinet. This was a good way of seeing how much the neo geo hardware really goes for... a real world example vs making it from parts.

digitalpress
11-14-2003, 01:40 PM
Great, the research is great, but this reads like yet another one of those threads where someone is excited about a purchase they just made and proceeds to get beaten down by experts who "know better".

If your opinion is that the price was too high, a single post explaining your point of view is more than enough.

"I got this great thing for $100!"

"$100? You should have paid $50"

"But it's in excellent condition"

"Yeah but there are better condition ones on eBay"

"I got this from a friend though. I don't like using eBay"

"Your loss! You got raped, chump!"

I'm sorry if I'm coming across like the ass that I am but threads like these are TEDIOUS.

chadtower
11-14-2003, 01:54 PM
Ooookay then. I'll move the thread in a more desirable direction.

I'm looking at some neogeo screenshots and the color is striking. I would really like to experience some of these games on the original hardware. I have noticed, though, that every one I've looked at so far has 4 buttons. Do all of the neo geo mvs carts require 4 buttons? The cab I have at the moment only has 3 and I don't want to alter the control panel.

Ed Oscuro

Ahh...I paid $650 for my Neo Geo. AES.

Truth be told I thought MS-X was worth more, but still...if you've got a bit of extra money to spend on games, why not give the guy a good deal? He'll be more willing to find better/more expensive games for you.

Since nobody has decided to answer his part B, I'll throw out a few choices:

Fighters:

Samurai Shodown 1, 2, 4, and now 5 (screw three, damnit, SCREW THREE!!)
-- Samurai Shodown (the original) always gets me with that intro. It's a classic. 2 is by many accounts the best and is common just like the original. IV was a great game but I believe it's significantly higher in price. V is "brand-new" and you might want to hold off on plunking down the money for that one until you know you like the series...or until you've got a good collection going :D

Last Blade 1 and 2
--more great 2D fighting action. Among the very best 2D fighters ever, if not the best (depends on how you view Guilty Gear I s'pose)

NINJA MASTER'S!!!! [sic] Well, okay, it costs way too much, but I like it :D

Fatal Fury, and pay close attention: 3 and Real Bout Fatal Fury Special (not Real Bout Fatal Fury, not Fatal Fury Special, not Karnov's Revenge...). There are a couple other good games in this series, but I like these two best.

Art of Fighting 3! W00t!

King of Fighters (mandatory, mentioned because there's a mad raving band of Leeds supporters and other lunatics outside my door who have got the wrong address...really these games aren't quite as good as people say, but you didn't hear me saying that.

Shooter

Metal Slug series: yes, you know something about this already. X is okay, but I like 3 better. The original is very, very good too, some say better than any of its sequels.

For those of us who don't like fighters, what would be the nonfighters to consider?

Well you're throwing away the STRENGTH of the Neo-Geo and more than half of it's "top 20 list" in my opinion, if you bypass all of the system's fighters, but you're still left with some awesome games.

You're well aware of the Metal Slug series, no reason to elaborate on the obvious.

The Aero-Fighters games are excellent SHMUPS, there are a few titles that have slow-down but these rate among the best arcade SHMUPS ever.

League Bowling is to date my favorite bowling game (in the arcade).

Neo Turf Masters is by FAR my favorite golf game of all time.

I thought Top Hunter was a pretty interesting platformer, and Magician Lord is fun too.

Still, I keep thinking about the great games and series you'd be missing! Samurai Shodown! King of Fighters! Fatal Fury! Last Blade!

Again, if it's within your means and something you want, GO FOR IT. Have fun. Life is short.

Chad - not every MVS game requires all four buttons, though most of them do. Generally, you can easily find out the required controls and buttons online through FAQs, guides, or mini marquee (literally small sized marquees for each game) scans.

While I'm quite into fighters, I can still recommend some other lovely titles:

Metal Slug anything - they're all good, really. The original, 3, and X are typically considered the best, though.

Shock Troopers 1 or 2 - It's Metal Slug meets Ikari Warriors. Some people prefer the first, I prefer the 2nd, but they're both great.

Pulstar and Blazing Star - Horizontal space shooters, and just excellent.

Aero Fighters - Vertical shooters, also delicious.

Zupapa and Nightmare In the Dark - Fun if you're into the Bubble Bobble/Snow Brothers genre.

Bust-A-Move - Obviously, a puzzle gamer's delight.

Senguko 2 and 3 - Side scrolling beat-em-ups. 2 will last you a little longer, but 3 is way prettier to look at.

And of course there are many many others... see http://www.neo-geo.com/ for all sorts of info.

Eh, the only fighter I've ever enjoyed at all was Virtua Fighter, and even then it was only the Saturn versions and only because of an interest in martial arts. Something about a fighter just doesn't do it for me. Maybe it's because I play alone 99.9% of the time.

I can guarantee you the bidder in that first auction paid up! That's my new bidding account! 8-) But that also included a multi BIOS another $25 item, so it was a good price. I think MDgamesales sometimes has 2-slots for $175 thou, so it's right inline with what they cost separately.

Those other auctions for the Metal Slug X carts it's hard to say, that seller deals in bootlegs, and just plain rips people off sometimes, there's a reason those are all on the cheap, it often goes for over $100.

I think $600 is a fair price to pay for a 2-slot mvs with BAM & Metal Slug X

There's one game that I'm super addictied to when it comes to Neo Geo..

Check out Money Exchanger..

I find it to be better and more enjoyable than puzzle bobble series. Super Dodge ball is also really fun!

As far as the price is concerned.. 600$ is average price.. it's not that much. Don't forget that you have other things there that costs some good change if you buy anywhere else (like coin door, buttons, joysticks and other neo geo only MVS add ons).

If its build well, the screen as no burns.. go for it!!!! At least you know the guy and you can bug him for help if you run into any problems!

Senguko 2 and 3 - Side scrolling beat-em-ups. 2 will last you a little longer, but 3 is way prettier to look at.

Really a minor thing, but it's Sengoku (just so's nobody wastes time trying to find pictures in Google with the name misspelled). I liked Sengoku 2...3 is prettier to look at, but its play is so generic it makes something bleed. In puppies. The game's presentation outside the game itself (menus, game select) isn't so pretty or straightforward as in Sengoku 2, unfortunately. I say hooray that cyclops mask dude didn't make a return, though (of course, that's speaking after having played something like 10 minutes of it...as far as I can tell it's your normal "undead armies have risen" foolishness with no thought of building up to a climatic boss fight at all).

Eightman looks pretty darn impressive (as long as you're fixed on the characters ingame, that is), and sounds even better, but there's not much depth to this one. Just another inventive but dodgy early Neo Geo game...gotta love the Level 1 (er, 1Stage 1Area) sub-boss who's nothing but a direct ripoff of Predator. He's even got the mask!

Hey Darksol, you should feel good about your purchase :-P

You are lucky that you can go somewhere close by and pick up a Neo cab, I've been trying to find one locally for years, with the help of friends in the Arcade business, and I've had no luck. Hell you guys, I would pay $600 for that stuff he is getting!!, and I have a Super AES!

You are not getting Raped, especially if you are satisfied with your purchase. Even if you found a unit online for a cheaper price, you would pay out the ass for shipping fees. Think about the convenience of having a technician close by to work on the machine for you (if you don't know how to repair buttons and stuff). Nah, Darksol is getting a good deal if you ask me, and I'm glad he is getting the real thing instead of telling us how much he likes the roms.

Have fun with your cab man, and remember you are lucky, Neo cabs aren't as easy to obtain as some people might lead you to believe.

Dude, thanks. That comment of yours makes me VERY proud to be purchasing this. (I never said I actually aquired it, but I shall.) The arcade owner has known for years that I've been wanting this, so I'm on the very tip top of his list for this thing.

Speaking of which, what are the cabinets made of? That compressed wood stuff? And I'm still trying to figure out a good way to get it down in my basement. Oh, well... just as long as I CAN get it down here, I have the perfect place for it, right beside the fireplace in its own little corner.

Once again, I open up the discussion of what games I should consider getting. Mind you, I am not made of money so I can't spend $400 on Metal Slug 5 or something. Just some good classics.

bah, who wants a 19" monitor? Gotta be at least 25"

Darksol, enjoy your purchase, the Neo Geo is mighty fine gaming powerhouse.

Mr. Ninja already mentioned plenty of great games to add to your library, but I'll add another. Magical Drop 3. Best puzzler I've ever played, it's digital crack.

Once again, enjoy your cab, it was worth it. Trust me.

That's what happens when you're trying to respond to a post and *work* at the same time. While your intentions might have been good, I somehow can't help thinking back to when I called you condescending a few weeks back. I gave $200 for my single slot cabinet with Double Dragon in it. I don't know what some of the other carts go for, but I think Double Dragon might have actually DECREASED the cabinets value. :)

I'm looking for a Puzzle Bobble right now. They seem to go for between $20-$30 on eBay. I bought an Art of Fighting and some other early fighter for $10 each on eBay, so some of the early stuff can be picked up pretty inexpensively. I might also pick up an Aerofighters 2 or 3 cart, since I also have a dedicated Aerofighters cab.

For anyone who doesn't like fighters, I probably wouldn't recommend a NeoGeo. That's just me, but it seems like someone's estimate of 50% fighting games would be pretty low. Almost all of the stuff I've seen for it on ebay except Metal Slug, Puzzle Bobble, and Aerofighters are fighting games.

Yeah, Neo Geo has more to offer than Fighting games, I got mine for stuff other than Fighters, like:

Nam 1975
Magician Lord
Baseball Stars
Football Frenzy
Aerofighters 2/3
Sengoku series
Metal Slug series
Shock Troopers
King of the Monsters <-----fun and cheap
....

The Neo has a little bit of everything to offer the Action/Arcade fan, along with some good puzzlers (so I hear).A very solid lineup thru and thru. I really like the Sports games on Neo for some reason. They are really easy to learn and the computer AI is great, at least on the sports titles I've played, I still can't beat the tournament mode in Football Frenzy, I love the challenge though. I would suggest staying away from these two games:

-The Super Spy
-Legend of Success Joe

The Super Spy is decietful, in that it's like the coolest game you've ever played...for 10 minutes...then Wham "where did the fun go?"

Zed Blade (aka Operation Ragnarok) is a decent way to kill time, but it was never anything special, not even back in 1994. Cyberlip isn't that great either, even if its ending is a classic. And I've never seen the appeal of Nam 1975, Aero Fighters 2, or Ghost Pilots.

Still, you could add Top Hunter, Last Resort, and Puzzle De Pon to the list of enjoyable non-fighters. And Blue's Journey is a fun little platformer, provided you can stomach the whole eco-rainforest-Ferngully theme.

Funny you would mention Neo Drift Out. I personally prefer the non Neo Geo versions... Drift Out and Drift Out '94. I could never get the hang of NDO because you used a joystick instead of a wheel.

I am honestly suprised to see that no one has mentioned Super Baseball 2020... That is my favorite Neo Geo game of all time and I honestly never get tired of it, regardless of how difficult it is in my mind.

Been wanting a neo geo cab forever, problem is I don't have the space, 19 living at home, transfering to UCLA next year, the parents assume I'm gonna be paying for LAW school by selling off my collection, Sad thing is it'll probably be the only way, I think once I start all over again I'm definitly gonna pick up a neo cab, the mvs games are like a fifth of what they are on aes, it's the only reasonable way, I just picked up an aes gold and I'll probably only pick up maybe 5 or so games around 30 bux, wanting games like magician lord, king of the monsters, etc, what games are descent for 50 bux or under for the AES? I know id have a much larger choice of games if we were talking mvs

Blazing Star, Pulstar, Metal Slugs, Super Dodge Ball, Magical Drop 2/3, Money Puzzle Exchanger, Neo Drift Out, Baseball Stars 2, Twinkle Star Sprites, Viewpoint, League Bowling, Shocktroopers 1/2, Aero Fighters 2/3, Cyber Lip, Nam 75, Ghost Pilots, Magician Lord, Neo Turfmasters, Super Sidekicks 2.
.

"Super Baseball 2020"
It's one of my Favorites too..It's always in my cab..that and Baseball Stars 2..

I also am a big fan of League Bowling, since I bowl and the game rocks..
I've thrown a 300 perfect game on League Bowling.

While we're on the subject of Magician Lord, I've read a couple reviews that marked this one for death. What does everybody think of it?

You know, I really liked magician lord a lot, but it could just be since I played it as a kid, played it recently and I still think its a great classic

I would have to disagree. Here's a list of quality (that I know of) non fighting games on the Neo.

Blazing Star, Pulstar, Metal Slugs, Super Dodge Ball, Magical Drop 2/3, Money Puzzle Exchanger, Neo Drift Out, Baseball Stars 2, Twinkle Star Sprites, Viewpoint, League Bowling, Shocktroopers 1/2, Aero Fighters 2/3, Cyber Lip, Nam 75, Ghost Pilots, Magician Lord, Neo Turfmasters, Super Sidekicks 2.

Wow, I didn't realize there were so many! Trust me, I'm off to KLOV to start checking some of those out and will be scouring eBay for them. Thanks for the list!

I know the MVS fighters look good, but I'm such a non-figher game that I can't tell the difference between most of them.

Well, actually... if you look at all the fighting games for the MVS... you can tell them apart quite easily because they are all original series. Not blatent rip-offs of the Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat franchise. Plus, they all have some unique quirk all to themselves. So, I honestly feel that the Neo-Geo fighters are a notch above the rest.

If you're still having fun with it that might mean something. After all, I think Haunted Castle is a fantastic arcade game :D

If you like Magician Lord, try out Top Hunter. Joe gave this one a thumbs up and I'd like to second it. It gets very little mention from the Neo crowd but I find it entertaining. I also liked Blue's Journey for what it's worth.

I'm definitly gonna try top hunter thanks, I like blues journey as well, another one of the classics I played in the pizza joint back in the day, Spinmaster came with my neo geo and that games pretty damn fun, It's a lot like blue's journey but with better graphics and more power ups, hence the 1993 release date

I think the reason Cyber-Lip and Top Hunter don't get much recognition, is because Metal Slug is available. Especially for the MVS owners, Metal Slug games are just as cheap to get as those other two(well, atleast MS1), and Metal Slug surpasses every aspect of a game like Top Hunter. It's like Cyber Lip and Top Hunter were warm-up games for the big finale Metal Slug series. For AES owners, Cyber Lip and TH are decent poor mans Metal Slug games, I usually find more AES owners talking about those two titles, over the MVS crowd, for that very reason.

The thing that kills me about these "ho-hum" titles mentioned is that while they don't all have the sort of appeal that, say, much of Sega and Konami's titles from the same time had, the use of special effects in your average Neo Geo title are often quite stunning. Take Sengoku 2 with its pseudo-3D effects upon starting a new level, or just about any of the levels in Cyber-Lip. While the graphics themselves aren't always much to ogle, they were presented in a way that is quite stunning. On the whole these games were probably quite average for the time, but certainly not awful by any measure.

All this talking brings back the memories of the Neo Geo. I actually remember when it was in stores. I wanted one so badly. I remember the rumors (albeit greatly exagerated) that it used so much power it would cut off everything else.

I also remember some of the ads for the Neo Geo, touting the fact that it totally blew the NES (and comparable systems) out of the water. Which it does. I like the fact that some of the sizes of the games are absolutely HUGE. I do believe some of the sizes compare to PSX games (up around 700 MEGS)

If only the AES could have been more prevailent, I'm sure they would me churning out MORE games even now.

Well, they do still make AES games, not many but there's at least another 4 over the next few months.

I still want Metal Slug 5 MVS... :( no cash. Stupid holidays

although I'm starting to get really hyped for KoF 2003!
