Power Joy III (http://www.thinkgeek.com/cubegoodies/toys/644e/?cpg=10335)

This is a damned fine game list for a bootleg Famicom. I might get one, rather than try to fit 84 NES cartridges plus hardware into my dorm room. ;-)

It looks like it's got a 60 pin Famicom cartridge port, it runs on AA batteries or the included AC adapter, has a 2nd controller, and even has a built in LCD multi-game sort of thing. Cool.

Agreed, a nice lineup of Famicom titles. What I want to know is how is a (relatively) big retailer like Think Geek getting away with selling this obviously illegal device? Why hasn't the Big N crushed them under its wheels?

Time will tell, I suppose. ;-)

Haha. Zoom in on the pic of the units...the Power Joy III's LCD screen is black and white. I couldn't see playing these games on that. :O

You don't actually play the Famicom games on the LCD, though that would be really cool. It's basically a separate game unit with Tetris, and a few other things. The power switch can be set to either Famicom or LCD game mode.

I'd watch it on these, I bought a "Mega-Joy" which is very similiar, this one was a single controller (1 player only) and no LCD, but the damn thing shorted out after the third use, its been sitting in my "to try and fix" pile since then :hmm:

As with any knock-off product, you run that chance

They have the older power joys at QVC.
And some other weird stuff.

It says one of the controllers also works as a gun?

I dunno, seems like they are packing in too much for the price, it seems a bit flimsy and something that would break after a few uses.

Oh, dude. I recommend getting the Video Maxx. I haven't played it yet, but those are all new, unique third party games.

I have a Power Joy 2 (found it at a thrift for $2), and the 84 games are decent enough. A lot of them are different levels of the same game, but listed as different titles. The famicom cart slot is a definite plus. The controllers suck, but they are better than I was expecting. I played Rockman 3 for an hour or so on the thing, with minimal complaints. I've had it for over 6 months now, and it has yet to break on me!

The older power joy had S-video output.

Nintendo has gotta be ready to start kicking some ass on these units. I'm from a pretty east-bumfuck backwoods town, and the mall in concord, NH has these things set up in a kiosk, with TV's running them to catch the holiday shoppers (And I'm sure he's charging, and making, a killing too)

Maybe they'll shut all these down and make an official one (hahahaha, yeah right)

Yeah, I found a Power Joy II at my thrift complete in the box for $14. Good deal. I'm not a hardcore NES fan but I really enjoy this thing. Runs on 4 AAA's or AC. There are ten games built into the base unit and a pack-in 84-in-1 Famicom cart. The cartridge port is definitely what makes it a worthwhile purchase. I had to drop another $10 on a famicom-to-NES pin adapter (available from good ol' Lik Sang) but that beats perpetually disassembling and cleaning the contacts my toaster.

For anybody who's planning on using a Power Joy to play NES carts it works just fine, but in addition to the pin adapter you will want to take a long thin rubber band and wrap one end around the cart - which hangs from the bottom of the base unit - and the other end around the light gun end. Otherwise the cart will wobble around and the game will crash. It's not pretty, but it works.

As for the light gun, it works okay. You have to aim pretty much horizontally at the screen. If you hit the screen diagonally you'll be off somewhat. But what do you expect for $14.

Anyway, as famiclones go this one seems pretty sturdy to me and I'm glad I bought it. BTW, does anybody out there actually own one of those Voyager game systems (http://www.qvc.com/scripts/detail.dll?item=E17687&tpl=detail&sc=&cc=&frames=y&from=&navlist=E110786*E17687*E17695*E17851*E2458*E29241* ) that QVC is selling? I think I saw those getting shilled once and I was wondering what exactly they're like? Are they both LCD and TV comaptible? Famiclone or something else? Thanks.

One question: What are you supposed to throw when you get angry with one of these?

Well, in effect you get to throw the whole console. Think of it as a total catharsis
