I have my PS2 unscrewed now so that I can change the internal gear setting depending on which media the game I want to play is on. But, after thinking about it, I wondered if it would be possible to run imports on my PS2 without buying anything other than the game, and if so, how would I do so?

You dont.
you have to mod the unit.

I do have a FIRST GENERATION PSX2 mem card and bios cd...
ask yourself ,,, what does that do?

if you have an import psx2 you can use this mem card to disable
region lock and macrovision.

I think that's some sort of DVD copy protection.

If you want an easy way to run imports, get Swap Magic boot discs.
