View Full Version : How good of a DDR player are you?

Kroogah

I jumped another hurdle today...beat my first Maniac song (no, it wasn't Have You Never Been Mellow...that's hardly worth bragging about) it was Keep On Movin'. Followed several minutes later by Put Your Faith In Me. This calls for an impersonation of Special Ed: Yaaaaaaaaay! Maniac! Maniac! Yaaaaaaaay!

And...how good are you?

(Note: This was originally going to be a poll, but the poll option would NOT work for me....)

Home or arcade?

Kroogah
07-23-2002, 12:09 AM
I beat those songs at home, but everyone is better in the arcade. Especially if you use soft pads at home. You'll have a hard time making the arcade machine's pads slide around with your feet! ^_^

Kess

Yashiro, I use a moded pad, with a board taped under it. Feels like the Arcade pad, sorta.

I don't like to brag about my DDR skills, because it..well..seems kinda nerdy to say "I am really really good at a dancing video game."

But..

I have successfully completed 3 Catastrophic songs - Hypnotic Crisis, Saints go Marching, Afronova.

I can do all songs up to 7 feet. I can do some 7 footers and some 8 footers. Only 3 catas. ;D

Hey, it's kinda nerdy to say "I am really really good at video games, period"....doesn't bother me though! ^_^

It seems like some catas are easier than most of the 8-footers. Step-wise, anyway. Some catas are more of an endurance test.

If you want to try some more catas, I've heard that Dynamite Rave and Dead End are pretty easy (easier than Afronova, anyway)

(In non-freak terms, cata is short for "catastrophic" which is the highest difficulty level a Dance Dance Revolution song can have; 9 feet)[/quote]

I can finish songs with 1 foot and look like a complete jackass doing it, but it's still fun.

Kess: Have you never been happy...just to hear your song?

Just beat my first 7-footer today! ROCK ON! Let Them Move. I guess that's not much to brag about...it was pretty easy. Should've been a 6-footer. Those 1/16th notes are a BITCH the first time around though.

Raedon: Man, if I had PSX game files to trade you.....

Man, I miss DDR. It's hard to schedule a trip to an expensive place like Gameworks any more when you don't have weekends off.

The only SSR/Maniac songs I've cleared (at least once, on my own):

AM-3P
Wonderland
Do It All Night

I have yet to really try anything else on my own.

Oh, and has anyone else tried Dance With Intensity? I LOVE that program! I'm missing a bunch of dances, but it's alright, Paranoia Rebirth can keep me company.

I have 2 left feet, I suck at this game. I get all hot and sweaty and look stupid doing it.

All those kids who go to the arcade are amaziong, they hit every mark not even looking at the screen. what freaks.

@Lifebringeroftorv: Practice, practice, practice, that's the secret to DDR. I find that I usually suck when I start playing Konamix on the PSOne till I'm warmed up. Then, I can move much more easily and faster.

Kroogah
07-24-2002, 10:09 PM
Jaye: I'm the opposite. I get gradually worse the more I play at one time. There are quite a few songs (Paranoia Max Dirty Mix, Drop Out) that I can only pass if I play them before anything else! ^_^

Come to www.ddronline.net You should post about ddr there. If you want to know my skills i can pretty much beat any ddr song. Just depends. Afronova... easy... Afronova Primevil even easier. Um.. Paranoia Rebirth.. Hm...Dead End... Name it i can probly do it. So if you wanna talk about ddr come to are board =) Oh... Just for info. Ive been playing for like 8 months.. Soo... Its getting kinda routine. Ive gotten to the point where single maniac isnt much fun anymore so im not Double Maniac. Oh and if you want to mod your pad. Please use those plastic things that have spikes in them that office chairs role on. Just tape a pad to one of those and your set. Its a very good mod. Other then that nothing is better then the arcade pad. Well i hope you guys will come and visit that board. Bye Bye and Keep on Dancing.

*Yawns at Yashiro* I'm way ahead of ya pal. I've beaten every basic song on USA,Konamix,2nd Mix,3rd Mix.

(but I'm good at Defender and Robotron if that counts) :P

07-26-2002, 01:41 PM
@Kess: Well, I've only been playing the game for 2 months....

And what version of 3rd Mix? The import PSX version? If you're talking about the arcade Korean version, then I'm truly impressed. All those Korean pop songs...that's a lot of tokens. ^_^

Kess
07-26-2002, 04:07 PM
No, its the import PSX version.. -.-

But I have beaten 1/2 of the basic Korean 3rd mix songs. ;D

Question: is it worth my while to get the home version? I weight like 220, will I just tear up the pad?

Lady Jaye
07-27-2002, 12:34 PM
No, the pad is sturdy enough to support your weight. However, I do suggest to not use the game late at night if there's a floor below you (I live in a basement, so that isn't a concern for me, but I can see how it would be if I did live in a second or third-floor apartment).

Kroogah
07-27-2002, 08:25 PM
@britboy: I used to think weight would be an issue...I have 2 things to say to you.

1) Read my accomplishments listed above.
2) I weigh about 250 pounds. ^_^

WiseSalesman
07-28-2002, 05:18 PM
I weigh around 250 as well. An arcade about 25 min from here has a 3rd Mix machine, and that's the only place I get to play. I'm planning on buying then modding a pad or two very soon. I also hear it'll help you lose weight if you play regularly, and I could stand to shed a few pounds. I know I get a workout when I got to the arcade!

So...anyone have suggestions on what type of pads to buy or where to get them? Please keep in mind that I'm a college student on a budget, and probably cant afford hard pads.

Lady Jaye
07-28-2002, 06:08 PM
I have a cheap $25 Cdn soft pad and it works fine (no prob. weight-wise). Anyway, you could always settle for something like that and, when you can afford it, move on to the Red Octane pad.

Britboy
07-29-2002, 12:34 AM
I have been recommended a few bundled packs, none above $125

Keir
07-30-2002, 03:58 AM
I weigh 120 and completely suck! So it goes both ways I guess.

BTW, what does the number of feet (as in 6-footer, 7-footer, etc.) mean?

Kroogah
08-01-2002, 05:41 PM
The feet are Konami's way of grading the difficulty levels of each song. It's a scale of 1 foot ("simple") to 9 feet ("catastrophic")

I can do several 7-foot songs. Yay.

Metrackle
08-02-2002, 12:13 PM
I have beaten Boom Boom Dollar on 3rd Mix, but I was one step away from failure as well. I'm average, but I do pretty well for somebody who lacks rhythm, rarely leaves the house, doesn't play often, and is rather poor. I'm only 130-140 and somewhere around five and a half feet (estimated in that area, as people shorter than me claim they're a height that I thought I was shorter than), yet I'm husky and I start reeking after a few rounds, and by reeking, I mean as in sweating up a stench, not as in sucking at the game. When I am winded however, I do start falling apart, and once I'm officially tired out, I play something else instead, mainly something that doesn't require much lower body movement.

Keir
08-02-2002, 01:48 PM
I'm getting better! :D

I've been going through lesson mode (which I didn't realise existed before) and doing pretty well. Still can't beat any songs though, but the practice is good for me, and I'm enjoying it!

Kroogah
08-02-2002, 04:22 PM
Yes, lesson mode is a BIG help. It helps you recognize the different patterns Konami uses, and it also teaches you to use both feet (which is something almost no one does at first) ^_^

I brought DDR to a party at a friend's house last night. No one there ever saw it before....now I have about 10 people hooked on it!

WiseSalesman
08-04-2002, 08:04 PM
I just beat my first five foot song this weekend (i know that's pretty pathetic, but I only play in the arcades, and not very often). I plan to get the home version, but everyone I've shown it to thought it was stupid except for one person, and he'll be heading out of state to go back to college very soon. So, once again, if I want to play in the arcades, I'll have to go by myself, which sucks.

@Kess nice reference

Actually I suck at DDR despite the fact that I can probably dance better than 99% of you out there. I used to take lessons- alot of lessons. I would like to be good at DDR, but I haven't taken the time and I'm not young and Asian enough, like the kids I see ripping it up at arcades.

Kroogah
08-06-2002, 03:27 AM
Not Asian enough? Yes, all Asians are good at DDR. And the Chinese can fly. ~_^

Dance lessons probably help quite a bit with rhythm, but not much else when it comes to DDR. DDR isn't quite "dancing"...it's more "stepping". The name for the all-maniac mode in 3rd Mix is more accurate...Step Step Revolution.

@Wisesalesman: Congrats! What song was it? My first 5-footer was Dynamite Rave, if I remember correctly.

I still cant beat some songs on the most easy difficulty. A few of the slow songs are super easy, but that's about it. The song "after the game" is the only one I can beat on normal or harder, and I hate that song.

Been playing DDR for about a year now. Can pass most 7-footer songs on Heavy difficulty with no problem. Anything higher than that though, I start having problems. Might have something to do with my height...I'm 6'8" and can't move my feet like those short, ungodly players that can get AAA's on every 10-footer song without looking.

Height may have something to do with it. It's probably harder for you to keep balance.

I've noticed, at least locally, that shorter players hold onto the bar while playing... I don't consider it cheating exactly, but it does bug me since it limits their movement a bit.

I used to be pretty good, but I had to stop playing due to school and my knees... I've been meaning to get back into it, though.

I've beaten everything on singles and doubles that's playable in the arcade through Extreme except for Paranoia Survivor Max Oni on doubles. I've also been playing for close to 8 years now XD

Eventually DDR just lost it's massive appeal to me (and I'm not a fan of In The Groove) so I started playing alot more beatmania and pop'n music, I'm also the lead webmaster/owner of www.bemanistyle.com if that counts for anything.

It is actually harder to play at the arcade because the time window in which you have to press the corresponding arrow is less than it is at home.

BTW not to be mean but I can pass any song on maniac besides 10 footers easily.

Maybe it helps I play varsity athletics as a sophmore.

I still play DDR at least a couple times a week (it's *really* good exercise and beats running on a treadmill :)). I don't play in the arcades much, mostly due to a lack of arcades with DDR machines around here, but I have a pair of decent metal pads at home.

As for skill level (assuming all of the 'default' settings for the PS2 versions of the game), I'm able to AA most 7-foot songs, A most 8-foot songs, pass all 9-foot songs (B or better in nearly every case), and fail miserably at the 10-footers (Max, Legend of Max, etc.). For the 10-footers, it's all a matter of endurance -- I can follow the steps for about 45 seconds or so, then I just get too tired to finish ;) I'd really like to pass Max 300 someday, but I'm probably too old (27) to do it now.

I have only played it a couple of times and I have never used the pads so I don't know how good or bad I am at the game. I would like to think that I would be ok. I really want to get the pads and buy the game, it would be a fun one to play with my wife, shes got pretty good rhythm.

I play DDR at home. Have two versions DDR Max and DDR Max 2. DDR Max 2 was my first time ever playing a DDR game. I started on Light mode to get the hang of things. Playing on the mode about that, I've actually managed to get B ranks on some songs, isn't bad since I still consider myself a novice DDR player. One of my friends who is real good at the games recommended that I always start with my feet on the left and right of the pad instead of in the center like the game suggests. Taking some getting used too. I STILL can't get a higher ranking on Burning Heat other than C. That song is so freaking hard!!

How the HELL did I miss this thread the first time around!?

I'm decent enough at DDR I think (hell, I beat Yash at the so-far-only First Annual CGE DP DDR Competition (he can correct me if I put that wrong LOL ). I can get through most 7-footers and the occasional Sakura (10-footer!), but overall I think I'm a 7 or 8 player. I haven't played much over the past six months though, so I'm probably losing a little bit of it, but I can still pick it up at the mall or something and pound out a good enough score.

Wow, really? Thats awesome, your website is a great resource.

So, I think I've been playing for 2 1/2 years. I can pass pretty much any 9 footer, but 10's are another story. I just cant seem to do... any of them. It's strange. I've only done doubles a few times, and everytime I try I did decent enough.

I'm decent, above novice. My biggest problem is that DDR began to lose appeal with me in the past few years - basically everything after 7th Mix hit the arcades. I just HATE most of the new music. I still play at home, mainly 2nd, 3rd and 4th Mix import on the PlayStation - back when the music was mostly pop rehashes pulled from Beatmania and "classic" DDR songs, E-Rotic and Captain Jack probably being my favorite artists. I've used most of the home pads and platforms but never been into it enough to throw down for metal platforms outright. Currently I'm using a heavily modified (to increas responsiveness) MyMyBox plastic 8 pad platform I picked up for $10 - no way I'd pay $120 for them. LOL

I love DDR but I'm not very good at it, unfortunately. I can play standard, but since there isn't a DDR machine near me anymore (CRYING) I have nowhere to practice and I've probably become really crappy. I think there's still an arcade in the city, but the machines are always being occupied by leet Asians and it's right at the door so people off the street come and watch you and... it's embarrassing! :P
