Hi all,

Well, I've been away from the forums for quite a while but now I've got broadband here in my little house in Kyoto. I'm looking for a way to pick up some extra cash here and there, and I'm thinking that I'm in the perfect position to be a middleman for those looking to buy Japanese games, systems, whatever. There's a huge selection in Osaka (a quick train ride away), but I don't want to start buying stuff and speculating on whether it'll sell on eBay or not.

I'd also rather deal with the higher class of people here on the DP forums. :)

So, here's a general idea of what kind of stuff I can get my hands on and what it'd end up costing you - enough so that I am making a profit but probably cheaper than they'd go for on eBay. If you could find any on eBay, that is.

Dedicated "Pong" systems - the Nintendo Color TV Game 6 and 15 (around $100 each, depending on condition/completeness), Epoch's TV Vader (Space Invaders) or TV Baseball.

Early console systems - Sega Mark III (just like the one owned by Supercade author Van Burnham) or SG-1000 II (between $100 and $150 each depending on condition/completeness), Epoch's Cassette Vision or CV Jr (the first Japanese programmable), Bandai Intellivision ($200+), and many more.

Famicom - pretty much any game loose or boxed depending on availability. Disk Systems that have been checked and worked when the store traded them in - $100 without box, more with. AC adapter seperate, around $10 with purchase of system would be fine. Disk games - around $30 for Zelda or Mario 2, others lower or higher. Robot, games, Family Trainer (Power Pad), generally $150 for each piece of hardware with box and more for complete games.

Neo-classic systems - PC Engine, Mega Drive, Neo Geo hardware and software are generally easy to find. Super Grafx system about $150 with box, PC Engine Duo, Duo-R, or Duo-RX between $250 and $400 complete.

Game music CDs - a few rare ones. Ask me about availability.

And that's about it. Of course, all I've listed here isn't the full extent of what's available, so just give me an email - chrisk2018@aol.com - if there's anything specific you're looking for. Generally, I'd want PayPal as soon as we worked out price so I'd have the money to go buy you what you want.

And if you think the prices are high, well, that's a function of most used-game sales here in Japan being through specialty 'retro games' stores in the city. Can't really do any better without scouring flea markets and coming up empty most of the time anyway.

that sounds great man! anyway you could get some pictures? I'd love to see the insides of those old game shops in Japan.. Also find the good spots.. cuz I'm probably coming out there some time early in 2003 :)

The problem is that most Japanese shops (read: all of them) frown on taking pictures. I can play the stupid gaijin card if I feel like it, and I will probably have to when I do my game-stores feature for Animerica or Shonen Jump... that's when you take one picture, and when they yell at you, you pretend that you had no idea it was prohibited, and then you buy something expensive so they're okay with you.

And, if you're going to be in Osaka/Kyoto, I will definitely show you around one or both cities. I already know the good spots. ^_-

Your prices are very very high, infact famicom for example, you can pick up disk systems new in box for 3000 - 4000 yen, around $30 US dollars.

Duo R hit around 10000 yen regularly for boxed complete ones with games, again a little under 100 US dollars..

I dont know where your looking but i suggest the shops your looking at are ripping you off big time..

These are of course yahoo JP prices that im quoting.. maybe the shops there are charging much more..?

Yep, the prices are high. It's because the shops here basically know what the stuff is worth and they charge it. I was just checking to see what kind of interest there was.

To those of you above who wanted stuff, please email me at chrisk2018@aol.com with a list of what you're looking for - specific items, games, etc - and I can let you know what stuff goes for here, and what it would cost.

...is that the prices I'll be able to offer on most items do end up being more than what you'd pay on eBay or whatever. And so there's no real reason why you'd want to ask me to buy for you.

Generally, I'm beginning to think this might not really work out, if only because the kind of stuff people are looking for can be found elsewhere cheaper. I offered because there are some things that are simply not offered for sale at ANY price outside of a few stores I know in Osaka - Nintendo's old dedicated hardware, SC-3000 games, etc. Only one person has asked about those so far.

People have been asking about rare Saturn games and the like and the truth is that Japanese are quite aware of what's rare and what's not and price things accordingly. There's always the chance that I'd find a Radiant Silvergun for fifty cents at a flea market, but that is like getting hit by lightning - twice.

I've emailed everyone who's emailed me thusfar and am still going to try and find what you're looking for. Anyone else who reads this thread, I would caution you beforehand that the prices will probably be above what you could get elsewhere and that you can get a Famicom/Disk System/games cheaper on eBay in all likelihood. :?

However, if you're looking for a Color TV Game 6 or really do have a request for a rare item that you just can't find anywhere else and are willing to pay for - let me know.
