exciting news for northeast gamers, and well, an idea for the rest of ya...

the next new england classic gamer's meet is coming up march 7th here in boston, and this time we're trying out a new contest. since people had so much fun with joustpong last time we're staging a big prize challenge. it works like this, to get in the contest each player has to ante up a game worth $8-14 bucks. all of those games will go into a box which will be the first place prize, 2nd place gets a 2600 ewok adventure and third gets a 5200 paddle controller. the contest will feature 7 games, with low scoring players to be weeded out as it goes along.

the games are to be picked by the select seven, that is our most hardcore members, one each with a mystery final game. we're taking games from all eras and platforms, games that are fun to watch and challenging. so that nobody shows up and gets blown out of the water we're annoucing the games ahead of time. we're also encouraging contestants to bring their own favorite controllers, no whining about my wico sticks please!

as for the ante part, i think $8-14 is bare min. to make it worth winning. it can be a piece of hardware, a loose uncommon game, a nice boxed game, a newer used game or even cash if you're really hurting for tradebait. i'm figuring on anywhere from 12-18 players so it'll really add up. while the ante part is up to you dont even think about showing up with 12 copies of super mario bros or a bare genny deck, we'll flog you with a CV power supply.

so without further ado, the annouced games thus far, do your homework to win big!

super monkey ball mini game MONKEY TARGET, gamecube

QUICK STEP, atari 2600

MORTAL KOMBAT 2, SNES

JOUST, atari 7800

3 more to come...and your hint on the final game

"a TRUE classic, created just across the river"

so if you live anywhere near boston, come on over and show your skills! NECG is open to all, just ask me or clubninja to get on our emailing list. in addition to the olympics we'll be doing our big buffet trademeet, beer slugging, dorito eating, game playing, trash talking, meet and greet kind of thing. the other three games should be annouced by monday evening, with another hint on the final game.

Man that sounds so cool! I'd love to take part in something like that. Too bad I'm in DC...I wonder what it would take to get something like that going at next year's CGE?

Mortal Kombat 2 is in there afterall? Perhaps I should get involved in this contest too instead of just documenting and refereeing it ;)

the full lineup is in! thanks to some great choices by our "select seven" its shaping up to be a showdown with something for everyone. to make the match up flow we've divided the games into two heats- the first 4 will be score based challenges where all players will compete to rack up the highest total score, after this round the feild will narrow to a few mighty players. the second heat will be all about head to head 2 player deathmatches, 3 grueling clashes to determine the final two who will face off in the mystery game!

(order of games and exact rules subject to small changes)

HEAT 1 line-up- the high score challenge

Super Monkey Ball (GC)- Monkey Target: with four different monkeys to choose from its key to learn which one works for you, and yes it will be available for pre-meet practice. choosen by our resident party game expert kirk israel, good luck beating this guy!

Quick Step!(2600)- keir brings this quirky imagic title to the table, play as a kangaroo or as a squirrel, out-bounce and out-wit! this game has as many ways to frusterate the other player as it does to score points, do yourself a favor and read the manual!

Darius Gaiden (Saturn)- clubninja dares you to out silver hawk him in this side scrolling shoot em up, steal his power ups and ride in his wake, he hates that!

Joust (7800)- my personal pick for the challenge offers you the chance to even the score, play nice and reach the egg wave together or get mean and knock out the guy who took the lead in the previous rounds!

HEAT 2- Head to Head Elimination for the high scoring

Hat Trick (7800)- the pro system stays plugged in for this hockey face off, what else could we expect from our bruins loving 7800 completist mark?

Mario Kart 64 (N64)- we couldnt have a showdown without this game, who doesnt love this title? we hope toddst does since we pretty much picked it for him, with any luck he'll be as slow moving on the track.

Mortal Kombat II (SNES)- remember we said you could bring your own controllers, this is the game you'll want to do that for. normally joe seems like a nice fellow but lurking underneath that mask is a burning desire to rip out your spine and hand it to you!

and then there were two...

...and only one will win the battle in our final mystery game!

your second hint "not bad for a bunch of guys who play with trains"
if you think you've figured it out keep quiet, it could make all the difference for you in the final round!

lastly i'll be making every effort to see that every game is up and running for those who want some practice rounds, the games will not be played back to back so you'll still have plenty of time to trade and drink beer, yes drink lots of beer...

Damn. Not a single game I play more than once a year if even that... most of them I've never played at all. I guess there's not a ton of point to entering for this guy. :embarrassed:

chadtower felt-

:embarrassed:

chad, the embarrassment comes after the match, not before it!

this is why i opened the game selection to 6 other people, to offer a broad range of games, i'd really be surprised to hear anyone say they are a master at all or most them. in my case for example- i suck at monkey ball, played quick step twice, played darius gaiden for the first time last night and well to be humble, i rule at JOUST! so theres a lot of games i'll have to practice at if i want to make a decent showing and i think everyone else will find themselves in the same position gamewise.

the contest is not won on one game alone, if you're a decent player across the board and use cunning strategy you could blow past the one trick ponies. besides you have nearly a month to practice on these games, even if you dont own them there are emus out there!

come on chad, cowboy up!

Aw Chad, *everyone's* doing it. Cave to the pressure and have the best competative gaming experience you'll ever have. ;)

Practice, practice, practice!

Time to start practicing! Unfortunately I only own three of those games (except possibly the final game... no idea what it is!)
