Mine is an Atari. I don't know what number goes with it like 2600, but I do remember getting it barely. My aunt gave it to me. I think that was when i got hooked on video games and became too lazy to do my school work....<sigh>, but I'm fought my laziness and have won a long battle. -_-

My first console was the NES. Got it when I was 6(13 years ago) for Christmas. The NES is still one of my favorite consoles.

Ahhh my old Nes. As I look fondly at its sharp edges and now dull ensignia (damn cleaning solution) I remeber the times my cousins would come over. First thing we woul do is play some games, Shooting ducks (duck hunt) or kicking eachother with a giant boot (battle toads) we all had such a great time. ohhh the memories. Think I got it in the late 80s 87 88 89 some were in there.

Coulda sworn I posted in here before, (I looked, I didnt) oh well......

First system I can remember playing was my parents 6 switch 2600. It was eventually "given" to me (it was old and was in the throws of dying) when they replaced it with a 7800 (I think). The first system that I truly called my own was my NES that I got when I was 7 or 8 (87/88)

The first system that I ever owned was the Grandstand Adman 2000 which was a Pong Console (It only played Pong) and this console was given to me by my great aunt, I'll never forget that console, black and white colors only and endless games of Pong. I remember playing this thing at 7 years old and thinking "wow the TV is alive" :)

The first system I ever played was the Atari 800xl. I didn't know how to operate it well since we only had about 8 cartridges for it and 100+ games copied on tons of floppies. So I would look foward to seeing my good ol' half brothers on the weekend when we'd sit there and load up the games off floppy and have gaming bliss all weekend.

Nes for me. It seems like a person's first system is invariably their favourite system today. I'd like to know what percentage of DPer's have a favourite system that is NOT the first one they owned, or is one that they discovered recently (ie: didn't play in childhood).

My first console was an Nintendo 64, and it's not my favorite. my favorite would have to be...Playstation One or Dreamcast.

Like I said my first console was an N64, back in '99. Yeah, Yeah I haven't been gaming THAT long but I still love it.

The first game system I owned/played was a hand-me-down from my uncle (brother really since my grandparents adopted me when I was born...) It was the brown one... With probably about 10 games. I really loved it. I had it hooked up to this strange contraption of a 5 1/2 inche B&wtv/tape deck/ radio/alarm clock device! I was about 10 or 11. My neighbors started getting NES at the time and I really wanted one SO badly. My grandmother was a crossing guard at a high school near out block and there were a couple kids who would sell her atari games for a buck or two a pop constantly. Everyday when I got home from school there would be a couple of atari games on the kitchen table! In a couple of months I had close to 100 I would think. But I really wanted a NES. This was a little bit before X-mas. I asked for a NES and when I opened up the big box under the tree I found an atari 7800!!! I guess a grandmother walking into a toys r us just asked for the latest atari or something. I didn't mind because I got Ms. Pac Man with and I think food fight. But I was still playing it on that 5 1/2 inch black and white tv!! My birthday is in february, and I asked my grandmother to get me a NES. My birthday comes along and I thought for sure i'd get the nes and there was a huge box wrapped up... it looked to be what i thought a nes would be the size of. i opened it up, i shit you not, it was a pair of roller skates with geoffrey the giraffe from toy's r' us on the side!!! i was like oh. okay. i was kinda sad but i was like well whatever. i went into my room and started doing my homework and she came in and gave me the keys to the to her car and told me my real present was in the trunk of the car. I ran downstairs and it wasn't even wrapped!! it was the nes, THE POWER PAD pack i was so excited. Of course I played mario and duck hunt first... my nearly blind grandfather at that time played duck hunt with me!! it was so much fun and probably one of the best memories I have of him to this day. the power pad was tons of fun but our downstairs neighbors complained when i played hahaha. so i guess the nes would be my fav. though after that i used to go to flea markets as a kid (my grandparents friends and neighbors would give me their crap)... id set it all up at a table, and as soon as i made enough for a game id run out and buy one... i got a genesis a couple of x-mas's later... loved it. great memories from that... the summer before starting high school i wanted a SNES so bad. i told my grandmother that if she didnt buy me a snes I wouldnt go to high school. i sound like a brat. but she was the crossing guard AT the high school i was attending that september... I was trying anything i could for her not to be there. she took me to the side and told me that I was being mean and that she was going to buy me the SNES but that she was disappointed that I was embarrassed of her working there. really at the time i was so happy. to get a snes and not having my grandmother working as the crossing guard outside of my high school that I would be a freshman at. okay long story short. her son (biological son), moves into my room when i was in college... sells everything i collected for drug money. ugh. that was when i gave up on video gaming. i only recently picked the hobby up again about a year ago and now working backwards... my last investment was a dreamcast and a gameboy sp.. sorry for the rant... feeling kind of emotional today!

but the NES days were my favorite... I guess because it had a lot of friends involved... another question, do a lot of people here play games alone or do you have gaming buddies? pretty much no one I know likes to play games or just sees it as kind of lame. :(

My First console was a Nintendo NES, Christmas of '89. I was 5 [almost 6, my birthday is two weeks after christmas]. I remember Religiously playing Mario 3 over and over again when it came out a year later, determined to find every secret by myself... Looking back, its amazing I had as many good games as I did, since I just got what looked cool. I did miss a lot of good stuff though... [making up for that now :D ]

First system I bought myself.... Gameboy Advance [day it came out]

Lets see....

NES - Christmas '89
Gameboy - Christmas '90
Sega Genesis - Christmas '93
Sega CD - Christmas '95
Sega 32x - Christmas '95
Sega Saturn - Christmas '96

After the string of failed sega systems I burned out for a few years and returned to PC.

Gameboy Advance - June '00
Xbox - Christmas '01
Nintendo Gamecube - March '03
Gameboy Advance SP - May '03

Dreamcast - June '03
SNES - June '03
NES collecting began in June '03 as well

Atari 7800 - October '03
Playstation 2 - Christmas '03
Nintendo 64 - March '04

Sega Master System - May '04
Colecovision - June '04
Sega Game Gear - June '04

The Game gear was yesterday.... The NES has been my personal favorite, but the Master System is fast catching up. I agree with some of the earlier posters, though, that usually its the first generation of systems you owned that becomes your favorite.

Wow.. missed this one :)

We were an INTELEVision Family. I remember wanting the VGC but back then the game console was a FIXTURE for the family. It was PROUDLY displayed with the TV!

I remember after playing Astrosmash for 12 hours and finally breaking my old record score (it was up there! but it wasn't anything like a world record) my dad said, and I quote, "I'm worried about you son."

My first "console" was a home pong type setup (i was to young to remeber what model or who made it). Other then that i remeber getting a nes on christmas of 86 and playing mario and dunk hunt all day. Sigh good times.

I also got some art mario paint type thing that same christmas. I think it was made by ljn. Anyone know/remember what it could be?

My first console was the NES at 2 years old, which was around 1991. My first portable system was the Game Gear. Ahh memories...

The NES gave out (typical) when I was 5, but then I got a top-loader when I was 6 and another front-loader last September (which is now my main NES). The Game Gear is still around, but I "killed" it by cramming down a piece of a peanut butter sandwich down the cart port when I was around 5. My dad got a replacement GG in 1995, which is the GG I still play.

PONG.

Yup, PONG. Parents had it. I remember sitting in the dark on my dads bed being completely transfixed by the little moving dot. I would BEG my dad to let me try it. Of course I had to wait for him to finish his game. But I was pretty impatient and wanted to play NOW. He would finally let me and I usually didnt have the skill to hit the dot more then a couple times. I got a little better at it but my dad got rid of it soon after. We then moved on to an Odyssey II, and Atari 5200, an Atari 7800, then an NES. I also had steady access to friends 2600, colecovision, and intellivision.

btw I am 30 years old

Yo

My parents celebrated my moving out of the house in 1981 by buying my 13 yo sister an atari 2600. Of course I had to visit often to be able to play it.

In 1983 I bought a coleco myself for $159.00 and thought I was the shiznit. And my sister and father got bored with the 2600 a year later and gave it to me. So of course I still have this six switch :)

Atari 400, I guess. I played my father's 2600 for a couple years and then bought the 400. At first I played nothing but games on the 400 until I could afford a disk drive (and a memory upgrade) about a year later. Later on, when my dad grew bored with the 2600, he gave it to me.

So the Atari 400 was the first game system I owned but the 2600 was the first I played regularly.

Got me a Sears heavy sixer 2600 in about 1979 or so. I remember it very vivdly -- we had moved far from our extended family up north the previous year, and after the school year ended we went to visit for the first time (just mom, me, and sister). When we got back, dad said, "welcome back! why don't you put your suitcases in the closet?" When I opened the closet, there it was. Played the hell out of that boy.

My first console? It was a Coleco Telstar Colortron pong console. It required two 9 volt batteries, one for video, one for audio. If you couldn't stand the piezo tweeter beep coming out of the built-in speaker, just unplug that 9 volt. It took me years before I discovered that it indeed played in color. I was used to playing it on a black-and-white TV.

Years later, for Christmas my brother and I got an Atari VCS, with Space Invaders for him and Asteroids for me. And thus my obsession began.

I got a 2600 and a NES at around the same time... it was 20+ years ago, so I'm not sure exactly which one came first. I do know, however, that the gap between the two wasn't more than a couple months.

I still remember my first game on each of them, though... River Raid and Dragon Warrior.

NES, though in technicality it belongs to my brother. First system I had that I could call my own was a Game Boy Color in either '98 or '99. First console was a Gamecube in 2001. We had other systems prior, but everything up until then belonged to "us", not me.

Technically the Atari and NES were bought for the family but I remember my dad playing the NES into the wee hours of the morning. I was with him when we bought a Sega Genesis at Sams club with an Autofire controller, Sonic, and Evander Holyfields real deal boxing, plus a mail away for Sonic 2 for free. But that system was the first that I had exclusively in my room but it was still for the family.

My very first system of any kind given directly to me was Game Gear for Xmas. First Console solely for me was Sega Saturn.

Yeah, After Saturn I got N64 but NES was always my first love of video games. When we moved in the mid 90s we threw it away because we didn't know how to fix the blinking light. But I bought one off ebay about 4 years ago and then bought an SNES off ebay just last year.

Mine was a Genesis model 1 that I got for my 6th birthday. It was the 1993 Sonic 1 bundle. The day afterwards my uncle brought up his stashed NES and put it next to my Genesis as he realized they could both run off the Genesis cords as his NES power cords had gone missing.

All I had for Genesis was Sonic 1, but for NES I had Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt, Duck Hunt by itself, RC Pro-Am, Wizardry, and Tecmo Super Bowl.

I started gaming on NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy, and GENESIS. But I got my first system for christmas of 1998. I remember nearly begging for an NES ( I called it "Intendo" at first). I remember my parents telling me that the Original Nintendo is too old, so I asked for a Super Nintendo, they said the same thing. finally I tried Nintendo 64 at a friends house with Super Mario 64. I fell in love. I asked and asked and asked.

Then came December 25th, 1998. I opened up a great big box with my name on it, and sure enough there it was in all her beauty..... the original Nintendo 64 with SM64 and Bomberman Hero.

I can't remember for sure if I got a Bally Astrocade or a Colecovision first. They were both found at a thrift store at about the same time. I think around 88'.

I remember that I kept bugging my dad to get me an NES, and one day he came home with an Atari XE Game System for both of us. That was the first "new" system I got. I think he thought he would be able do some massive computing with it. That didn't happen, but I did get to discover the joys of Miner 2049er.

I saved my money for what seemed like forever, and finally bought an NES. That was almost exactly one month before the SNES came out. I was so freakin' pissed.

Really though, I'd count the NES as my first, since it was the first I really wanted and asked for for Christmas. It seems like everyone I knew already had one at the time so it was pretty exited to get it.

I was born much later than the majority of you guys- right around the point when the industry was transitioning from 16-bit hardware to 32 and 64 bits (I was born in '96). My first ever video game console, you may expect to be a PSX or N64 but actually it was a classic Apple II computer. My mother purchased it for me in 1998 and along with it came many boxed games for it- a lot of them ports of arcade games like "Donkey Kong", "Dig Dug", and "Jungle Hunt".

As far as actual, pure consoles my first was really a PSX. I got it in January of 2001 as a birthday gift, and with it I received the three Gex games out for the system. It broke down from overuse around 2003, but I still have many of the classic games I loved back then like Gex and Spyro the Dragon.

I played some Mario World on it when I visited him, and then he got a PlayStation in 1999, and I literally begged my parents for months for one. Then, in September (or October, can't remember) of 1999, my parents gave in and I got one of my favorite game systems of all time. I never regretted getting a PlayStation, and I still play it to this day.

My first game console was an Atari 2600 and this was my all time worst game console of all time. The second would be the 7800, which I received not long after the 2600. Luckily these two horrible systems didn't ruin my enthusiasm for video games all together, as my love for them would fully bloom with the arrival of the Nes--the first great US video game console.

The first one that I remember my family having was a Roberts Rally IV or something like that. It's just a pong console.
The next console I had was my very own Sega Genesis.
