Was Sega Genesis the best Sega system? Give it some thinking and fill us in on your thoughts. Try to include the reasons for your answer also.

I don't think so. It might have been Sega's biggest commercial success, but I'd say it was no where near as good as the Saturn or the Dreamcast in terms of the quality or diversity of its software lineup. From a technical point of view, the Genesis was inferior to both the PCEngine/TurboGrafix16 and the SNES, while the DC and in some ways the Saturn were the most powerful machines during their lifespan.

Well it certainly sold the best. So, since it reached a greater market than the other Sega systems, I'm sure a higher quantity of people would hold it dear to their hearts.

So, in that way, yes it was. Technologically, far from it. But that's not what you meant, I'm sure, cuz you knew that.

Was it the best Sega console, going by sales alone, definately. But I don't know if it was really thebest Sega console in terms of how "good" it and it's games were. In that, I'd say the Dreamcast; more high-quality and differing titles.

Dreamcast was the best Sega system IMHO. The Genesis had so many games that were only half way fun to play, and way to many sports games. Dreamcast was plentiful of all of my favorite genres including shmups and fighters. Plus it alway had some good puzzle games as well as some Resident Evil action. The Genny may have sold more, but I don't think that it was Sega's best system.

One reason I love the DP forums is because people here actualy understand what makes a system a good system, for example the dreamcast. Go to gamefaqs and thousands of 12 year olds bash the DC like theres no tomorrow, and swear up and down that the ps2 is the best gaming system ever :hmm:
Im so glad I found DP LOL

I don't know man. The dreamcast was an amazing system, and was amazing for internet play. The Genises was a system with tons of great games. I think it wins by a hair line. It was definatly Segas biggest sucess.

If we go worldwide with this, the Saturn definitly makes a run at it, but for my money I'll go with the Genesis. I love the DC but the Saturn does 2D fighters better, and had more RPGs (covering my two weaknesses). SMS comes in a very close fourth on the list, since I love all sega systems regardless. If I HAD to go in order:

Genesis
Saturn
Dreamcast
SMS

I say the DC was the best by far. Ahead of it's time, ahead of hte curve, amazing games, died too early, like John Lennon.

Genesis is a great system, but I think if the DC had had a full run, it would be tops by FAR.

Hmm, I've never been that partial to the Mega Drive/Genesis. To me, the SNES was the king of 16-bit gaming and Sega's system never quite cut it for me.

My Interest in Sega grows after the Mega Drive - that is Mega CD, 32X, Saturn and finally peaking with the Dreamcast.

The Mega Drive/Genesis was still a great system, but it's far from my favourite Sega effort.

I agree with the Genesis being the biggest money making success, BY FAR! I mean eveyrone I knew either had that or a SNES.
But in terms of what system I liked the best, it would have to be the DC, second the GENESIS. :P

Saturn is my favorite....2D fighters, all the puzzle games, classic compilations, lots of classic Sega stuff, and the best joypad ever.

Dreamcast is 2nd place....Typing of the Dead, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, even MORE 2D fighters....

Genesis comes in 3rd. If I was a bigger shmup fan it'd be higher.

Dont get me wrong, the genises wasent a bad system, it just wasent my favorite. The games it had werent for my taste, so I much rather preferred the SNES.

From my experience, Genesis is the best, but I don't have a Saturn that can play Japanese games (yet) and I'm still only just discovering what the Dreamcast has to offer. From what I've seen and read of Dreamcast and Japanese Saturn games, I'm tempted to say Saturn is the best system, with Dreamcast and Genesis neck and neck for second. The Genesis' biggest setback is the huge number of crap games for it.

Dreamcast wins it for me it was the first system I ever put my money down on in advance of launch day and it certainly didn't disapoint here Jet Set Radio most original concept for a game in a long time, MSR awesome racer, Space Channel 5 so different and wacky, PSO a superb change to the ever quest clones that were popping up

Saturn comes in second for me but only because of the ground breaking Nights into Dreams, the Sonic games 3D, Jam & R, and such awesome titles as Panzer Dragoon, Burning Rangers & Shining Force III

The good ol Megadrive (Genesis) will still always retain a place in my heart and many many fond memories maybe oneday when I have my DC & Saturn collections complete I'll start on the ol system again along with the Master System too

I like the Game Gear the best!!! :D

...................Just kidding :P

Seriously, I think the Genesis is probably Sega's best console. Lots of great games, and lots of classic Sega franchises got their start on it. The Dreamcast is probably second for me, and I (like everyone else) realize that it shouldn't have died as quickly as it did. The Saturn is probably third, and I think that it is the best system ever as far as lightgun games are concerned. The SMS would have to take up last place with me as well, although it is by no means a bad system. Sega's consoles are always welcome in my collection. :)
