I Have a Theory...
The rise in game prices recently on eBay.co.uk seems to be in proportion to the amount of coverage "Retro" games have been getting.
"Games tm" Magazine has a Retro section, Edge's "Retro" Magazine & Retro Gamer have all popped up recently. Along with Retro coverage on TV Gamezville (Sky One) & Gamepad (Bravo) have both mentioned or had features of retro/the history of a game.
This in turn means a lot more folks are getting in on the collecting aspect and have been digging out their old consoles and ether making a quick buck selling or deciding to buy buy buy.
Unfortunatly the new buyers have no idea of the true value of a game and are going after what they are told is collectable without having a clue on the actual value of the items thus pushing the prices up higher than they should be.

At least this is what I feel has been happening. Not true in 100% of the cases but seems to fit the majority of them

How about you, any theories on the sudden increases?

I think your theory is pretty accurate. Retrogaming is becoming more prevalent in society since gaming is more mainstream now.

It's not embarassing to wear game related apparel now, or to admit you were 'down with that back in the day'.

Well, not as embarassing, actually. :D

your right, I think its mainly due to a bubble right now. It'll drop again in the near future. but overall, it is a good investment. I've always thought of them as our generation's baseball cards

In the 80's there was cards and comics, and in the 90's there was comics and action figures. Enter the 21st century and collecting games is HOT. All that JUNK or OUTDATED COMPUTER CRAP Grandma threw out is not either HTF or just plain wanted more then the supply. I agree with the bubble right now. NES and Neo classic stuff is on fire right now. Look at TG 16 stuff on the bay, insane!

So does this mean that you'll all stop making fun of people who pay more for a game than you think its worth?

Exactlly, like right now, I am wearing my nintendo shirt and only one guy made fun of it today. But true, gaming is very popular and the collecting is also. Some people just want the nostalgic feel, thus getting an atari, thus getting more and more systems.

All the damn coverage from the mags is pissing me off. Everytime I want to buy something it gets featured in a mag. Hmmm I'll think I'll buy a NEO GEO. NExt thing I know SNK is featured at Gamespot.com and a big article is done in Game Informer.

Well you can always go play an Odyssey 2.....they are always cheap even on the bay. The love for that system is limited! I hear you about buying something and then having it featured. I too bought a Neo Geo only weeks before the mag got released LOL
