It's all coming together next Sunday, March 7th at
Christian's place (19 anson street, jamaica plain MA 02130) We'll be starting at 2PM; however, you
can show up anytime after that and we won't make fun of you for being
"late." Please do *not* arrive early though, as Christian's family
needs appropriate time to prepare for us. The festivities will be
running at least until 7ish (hey, it's a Sunday night), but they may go
as late as 9 depending on lots of variables. If you still need
directions or other logistics info, please contact Christian for
directions, parking instructions, or what kind of beer to bring (
rcs7127@netscape.net ).

Now then, we have a few things to get through here, so please read
everything. First is the New England Classic Gamers Video Game Olympics
FAQ, as written by Christian. This should give everyone some insight
into the competition going down next weekend:

************************************************** **
New England Classic Gamers Video Game Olympics FAQ
************************************************** **

Q- what do you mean video game olympics
A- a multi console contest to determine who is the greatest gamer in New

England

Q- how do i get in on this?
A- first you need to attend the trademeet, then sign up for it on site.
the
catch is you're bringing part of the grand prize, bring any game or
gaming item worth $8-$12 to go into the prize pile.

Q- be more exact about the game i need to bring for the prize pile
A- dont even think of bringing 8 combats or a bare genesis, bring
something fun like a boxed atari game or a cool joystick or even a cheap

PS2 game...if you're really boring you could just throw down ten bucks.

Q- so the grand prize is all the games people bring, what about 2nd and
3rd place winners?
A- second place gets you copy of atari 2600 ewok adventure, NECG's self
produced super rare proto game, third place gets you a custom built
atari 5200 paddle controller, perfect for kabooming super system style.

Q- how many people can play?
A- as many as want to, we need at least 8 players to make it happen so
dont wimp out!

Q- what if i suck at the games listed?
A- you'll be in good company, as far as i know nobody owns all of these
games but everyone will have a chance to practice first.

Q- will this take all afternoon?
A- no, you only have to be there for your matches, just sign up and our
designated yeller will summon you.

Q- can i use a genesis power supply on my NES toploader?
A- sure, as long as its not the yellow tipped one

Q- is this gonna be a rigged contest where chris wins like the joust
pong battle?
A- chris will have the homefield advantage, on the other hand he tends
to drink a lot during the trademeets.

Q- can i bring my own controllers?
A- you can and you should, no whining, heck bring a big bad arcade stick

and clean up on mortal kombat.

Q- how does the game work?
A- we start off with high score games, they're multiplayer but the goal
is to get a lot of points, the second heat involves actively defeating
the other player, things get heated and then we end up at the final
mystery game where its one on one for the big prize.

Q- who picked the games?
A- we asked our most hardcore members, those who have attended at least
4 trademeets and made an emotional bond with cootie. of course those
people will have an edge on the game they picked but with so many games
thats not really a big factor, a player who is decent across the board
could easily beat a one trick pony.

Q- how does the elimination work?
A- everybody plays thru the high score round but only the topscoring
players move onto the elimination round, how that round works out
depends on how many people sign up to play

Q- uhh... what are the games?
A- glad you asked, check em out, practice, scheme and good luck!

HEAT 1 line-up- the high score challenge

Super Monkey Ball (GC)- Monkey Target: with four different monkeys to
choose from its key to learn which one works for you, and yes it will be

available for pre-meet practice. choosen by our resident party game
expert kirk israel, good luck beating this guy!

Quick Step!(2600)- keir brings this quirky imagic title to the table,
play as a kangaroo or as a squirrel, out-bounce and out-wit! this game
has as many ways to frusterate the other player as it does to score
points, do yourself a favor and read the manual!

Darius Gaiden (Saturn)- scott dares you to out silver hawk him in
this side scrolling shoot em up, steal his power ups and ride in his
wake, he hates that!

Joust (7800)- my personal pick for the challenge offers you the chance
to even the score, play nice and reach the egg wave together or get mean

and knock out the guy who took the lead in the previous rounds!

HEAT 2- Head to Head Elimination for the high scoring

Hat Trick (7800)- the pro system stays plugged in for this hockey face
off, what else could we expect from our bruins loving 7800 completist
Mark?

Pac Man Vs.(GC)- a last minute addition thats sure to entertain,
challenge and lead to some serious groaning, all part of the fun!

Mortal Kombat II (SNES)- remember we said you could bring your own
controllers, this is the game you'll want to do that for. normally joe
seems like a nice fellow but lurking underneath that mask is a burning
desire to rip out your spine and hand it to you!

and then there were two...

...and only one will win the battle in our final mystery game!

Q- can i have some hints on the final mystery game?
A- ok i guess so, its a true classic created just across the river by a
bunch of guys who played with trains...cryptic isnt it? dont worry,
there'll be practice time for the two finalists and the game is more
primative than pong. even if you think you know what it is i wont tell
you and i doubt you can practice it at home anyways...heh heh.

that depends on fast mr.clubninja can crank em out, but they are coming and they will be full of embarassing moments, and moments of triumph...

lets just say that if i recall correctly none of the DP crew made it into the second round of the olympics :embarrassed: not for lack of trying though, even in my inebriated condition i played such a masterful round of joust that i was asked to stop "you've already beat everyone else by a factor of ten, put down the controller and let your guests play!"...if only we had used a points instead of a medal system...sigh. it was also the most trade heavy meet i ever recall, serious amounts of games changed hands and there was hardly room to squeeze in another tub of games in.

and i discovered SFC "bastard!"...that needs further game play, weird stuff.

*AHEM* I made it all the way to the next-to-last game, Hat Trick, only to have Mark beat me 3-2. If only I had been paired with someone besides the local Atari 7800/Hockey expert! (for the record, that was the first time I had ever played Hat Trick in my life)

My only problem was Pacman Vs. I SUCK at that game. Came in third place on monkey ball, first place on darius, and I think top 5 in quick step, after that, it's kinda hazy :)

Much like Christian, I chose beer over a respectable performance in the olympics ;)

Otherwise, this meet was jam-packed with trading action and oodles upon oodles of fun. I actually tried to enjoy myself more and take a few less pictures than usual, but I assure you they'll be up once I have some time.

I'll leave you with a shot of my sexy new score from local collector Spleen. Well worth the stack of N64 games I traded for it:

Yes, all hail Spleen! That dude had some far out stuff. I'm quite happy with my intelli Tower of Doom, and Epoch Handheld Baseball Game (aah, the memories..) Scott - Still not sure who's box 'o'stuff contained that JM SCE?? LOL BTW -Christian I believe I also made it to the second round of the video game olympics -- and without even signing up "Mike.....Mike...Mike" :) Bring on June!

Keir

I seem to be missing my Genesis King's Bounty. I don't remember trading it to anyone (though a couple people asked). Has anyone seen it? :(

ClubNinja
03-09-2004, 11:36 AM
Mike - Hehe! I really had no idea until I started asking around ;)

Keir - Hmm, last I saw it, I was handing it to you after claiming Math Blaster instead. Maybe Christian could do a little detective work in the corner you were set up in. Hope it turns up :o

Keir -checked my trade box since i was next to you - I don't have it. Although I did try to fit your 5200 in my back pocket :eek 2: Seriously, I hope it turns up because it really stinks to think that one of our group would have sticky fingers.

boxed or loose?

It was loose.

you were in the front room by the bookshelf?
That's where I had my stuff, though I was standing over by the TV when Scott brought it over to try to get it from me. I have a feeling I put it down there and forgot about it.

Thanks guys.

great job as always ninja, less is more sometimes...

and sometimes things seem pretty clever when you're buzzed, such as trying to pose as a joust bird, oh man i swear it would it work as a video clip, the flap action i had going! well i like coverage,on sunday i let 20 or so folks wander round my place and then wednesday i let 100s more eyeball it. i hope it conveys the spirit of the get together, lotsa games, gameplaying and having a good time. all the game scores i made aside, its just as worth it to take this hobby from its usual online saftey and bring it to spitting distance. thanks to all who came out, and to those who should have joined us but didnt...what are you waiting for? cootie hasnt done a leg humping in 8 months!

As usual, great pictures and comments Mr. Ninja. But, why do you always photoshop the images to make me look balder than I really am? Not happy with the photoshop enhanced beer gut either...

Great seeing everyone...

As a member of the follicly challenged club I'd agree that dome shots are especially cruel ....... that's why I wore a lid! scot-I'm thinking of just setting up a table out in the cul-de -sac for June -would i need a permit for that? :)

As a member of the follicly challenged club

Actually, I prefer follicly impaired. I think that I got that from a Murakami book.

The NECG trade meets are getting better and better. Or, I am getting drunker and drunker and my memory is blurred. Eitherway, the video game olympics was a great addition. Hopefully, we will see more competitions like this in the future.

Damn it's good to have a full head of hair. LOL

It's also good to see that I don't look as fat in these photos as in the fall meet... those last meet photos made me go "whoa what the FUCK" and I cut off about 15lb of bodyfat between meets.

BTW, Todd, don't complain about the photoshopped hair and gut, he also photoshopped that bulge into your pants, admit it.

EDIT: Folks, Christian isn't doing a Joust pose, he's Daniel-San beating an imaginary Cobra-Kai. Sweep the leg, man, sweep the leg!
