Well I've got a few here,
Disgaea: Perhaps not entirely rare everywhere, but here in Vancouver BC, there were less than 100 shipped and anyone who knows anything about vancouver knows that we are for the most part a bunch of anime freaks... Thusly this title has been stolen from every video game rental place that got a copy.
Guilty Gear X and XX: though GGX sucked in the ntsc release, it was vastly under-printed. Its no wonder the series is having a hard time in north america (other than the masses of people that think MvC is a better fighting system) and while GGXX got more copies distributed around, its no longer being made. Really too bad when it comes down to it though, it was a great release.
hmm... I guess that's about it, other than what I expect to be another under printed game coming up next month... La Pucelle tactics... I expect that eb in the lower mainland won't see anymore than 50 copies.

Just out of curiosity are Mark of Kri or Winback hard to find?

Personally, I think that these will be toughies in the future:

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Grandia Xtreme
Klonoa 2
Magic Pengel
R-Type Final
Suikoden 3
Whiplash

aand they're all great games too!

Resurrection time!

Pulled from IGN:

Though IGN never reported an official story on it, we were told not too long after NEC's Culdcept was released that a second run of the cult favorite would be released with all new packaging near the beginning of 2004. Planned to be known as Culdcept: Game of the Year Edition, it was to boast several award logos (including ours) and come out in a much heavier print run than the original's 30,000 unit count so that new and interested parties could check it out.

Unfortunately, it seems that NEC has forgotten about it as well. As not only will the Game of the Year edition not come out in America after all, but neither will any other game directly published by NEC -- as we hear that its U.S. office will likely close up shop and head back to Japan.

I still see 'em floating around...

Suiikoden III isn't rare anymore, at least around here. I found about ten of them last week.

What about Butt-Ugly Martians: Zoom or Doom? I found this game at EB for $6 yesterday, and when I looked on Ebay, I only saw one NTSC copy up for grabs.

Also, was the GameCube version ever released?

I think whoever said SC5: Special Edition was gonna get hard to find had it on the money...I haven't seen one for a while now. R-Type Final though, I dunno...it's not exactly moving off shelves fast enough for me to get a good idea on it's rarity, but somehow I don't think it's anything more then Uncommon.

/me raises hand

I know that I said it. So far EVERY sega game made for the PS2 (except Sonic Heroes) has been a huge pain to get ahold of even just after a few weeks of its launch.

Well R-Types is acting just like Gradius III/IV was when it launched. not all over, but still avaliable and a year and a half after launch and POOF no more at all. Just give it time, R-Types just like its PSOne counterparts will also become a hard to get/desirable game.

How about Sitting Ducks? I just heard about a couple of days ago. Anyone seen this in any stores? Gamestop is selling it preowned only, and EB's site has no mention of it.

yes and no: for some games like marvel v capcom 2, you know the game wont get more reissues bc capcom lost the marvel license, but the xbox version iis far more rare. other games, like gitaroo man, you know are rare already. as for shin megami tensei and phantom brave special editions, i think it is too early to tell. ditto on growlanser.

11-02-2004, 04:44 PM
What about Katamari Damacy?

With as much publicity as that game is getting?

No way.

Walk into any Gamestop and look at the PS2 USED racks.

The first couple of games that you don't recognize by the cover art - take a closer look.

If you don't know what they are, or have never seen them before, chances are others haven't either.

I was surprised at the number of those, "What game is this?" titles I found.

Obscure titles that receive publicity aren't going to be rare, in my opinion.

Surprised no one said Tsugunai: Atonement

now that is a rare game, one of the first ps2 releases by atlus. that game will never be released again, and is very original. has to be one of the rarest games on the system

am i the only one who has heard rez is getting re-released?

here is a list of games that i think will become desirable in the future. maybe not rare, but worth money. pick them up why you can.

skygunner (this is inevitable, great game, buy it now!!!)
gradius 3 and 4
gradius 5
gallop racer games
ico
victorious boxers
gitaroo man
disgaea
tsugunai
rez (whether it's released or not it will be worth money)
klona
ring of red

i would bet money all these games will increase in value.

Canadian Psycho

ZOE - The 2nd Runner is a rare game. Seen it only once.

Gemini-Phoenix
11-27-2004, 04:45 AM
As far as PAL ones go, they are starting to appear gradually!

Space Channel 5 Part 2 is an obvious rare, as it never got a UK release.

Then there is Tour De France Centenery Edition (Or whatever it's called - The first one) and this is probably because it is a Konami game and Konami games are often released in limited numbers.

Disgaea is getting hard to find, and if you do track it down, it'll still be full RRP price everywhere.

Klonoa II: Lunatea's Veil has started to creep back up towards the £30 mark again.

And although not costing too much (At the moment) - I think Ephemeral Fantasia has potential to become the Suikoden of the PS2.

I reckon La Pucelle Tactics and Phantom Brave could also become highly sought after in the future, along with Castlevania maybe.

No doubt they will follow the same trends - RPG's and puzzler's - Oh, and don't forget Konami games have a tendency to become rarities...

As for NTSC games - Suikoden III and Grandia Xtreme are also creeping back up.

Funny you should mention this game Kris. Capt. Yash just mentioned it recently to me to keep an eye on (for the DP PS2 lists that Im helping working on) and I ended up BIN'ng one that he found for me for 17. It was an early first year title and is far from common. Something that I remember seeing in my indy shop, but never anywhere else. Worth going back and picking it up.

I have only found these games once.

Gradius 3 & 4
ChoroQ
Mr. Mosquito
Mobile Light Force 2
Castle Shikigami 2

The Gradius I found was missing a manual. Sold it on ebay for about $30, paid $12.

ChoroQ was a Kohls for $10... same with Castle Shikigami 2

Mr. Mosquito was used at GameStop for ~$30 w/o a manual

Mobile Light Force 2 was found at Fry's electronics also $10.

Maybe Graduis 5 will be like 3&4? Too early to tell on that one I suppose.

Mojo definitely ain't gonna be rare considering that it's a budget title that people have traded in in large amounts. Heck, they go for $3 new at TRU.

I'm starting to think that even Gradius III and IV won't even be rare considering I've seen 3 or 4 complete copies in the last month. That didn't stop me from buying a copy to play the other day though.

Its reasonably new and findable in a decent amount of places. Not saying that there are tons of copies or anything, but all the Local GS's have at least one new one and one Used in them (or so ive seen around here). It will probably be an uncommon title in the future.

Like Stu said, this one should be borderline uncommon. I snagged one off ebay for less than $20 shipped about a month ago. The only reason it's still in stores is that it's $40. Most of the folks who are going to buy know exactly what they're getting into...it's not much of an 'impulse buy' title. So I would kinda figure that many people who do buy it will most likely hang onto it..but the game is kinda meh, so maybe I'm totally off base here.

P.T.O. IV: Pacific Theater Of Operations
Vampire Night
Woody Woodpecker: Escape from Buzz Buzzard Park

I think that Vampire Night is tough to get, disc only or complete.

Time Crisis 2 & 3 are easier to find, simply due to the fact that they are recognized titles-more people bought them. Disc only versions of each are all over the place, complete a little less so. I still see new sealed versions of 2 & 3 floating around.

It's too early to tell for the most recent one, Time Crisis: Crisis Zone.

That's the funny thing about trying to gauge PS2 rarity. Things are still very much in circulation, so it's tough. That's my first revision of what I've found to be tough to get.

If anyone else has comments regarding the list I posted there, do mention them. The more knowledge I amass, the better!

Here's what I think might be hard to get later on from games released in 2004:

Asterix & Obelix: Kick Buttix
Castle Shikigami 2
Choro Q
Echo Night: Beyond
Firefighter F.D.18
Growlanser: Generations Deluxe
Kuon
Madden NFL 2005 Collector's Edition
Naval Ops: Commander
Nightmare Of Druaga: Fushigino Dungeon
Samurai Jack: The Shadow Of Aku
Sitting Ducks
Technic Beat
X-Files, The: Resist or Serve

I'd definitely add Aqua Aqua to the "RARE" list. One of the Game Crazys here has Vampire Night complete, but it's $32 even after the MVP discount. Parappa 2 is way way waaaay easy to find brand new on Ebay. Seems to be around a dozen of 'em on there at any given time.

Aquilla is not rare, look on ebay, bunch of copies in ebay stores selling for less than $10 brand new and sealed.

Whoever said that you can still get the PS2 Linux kit for $100, I want to know where. The US Playstation site says it's no longer being sold, and there's a brand new one on ebay right now for $277USD.

Mr. Mosquito is indeed fantastic.

Um, I can't seem to find "Edit", so I guess I have to post again....

I'd say that it's likely a relatively safe bet to snap up the "Romance of the III Kingdoms" games.

They may not be rare, per se, but if you get them at a good price, they're unlikely to decline in value beyond a certain point. They have a very devoted demographic.

I'd personally like to get a complete collection of all the launch titles + 1st party launch accessories.

In general, Atlus games are hard to find. Some KOEI games are also hard to find, such as Winback and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, especially VII and VIII.

One game that no one has mentioned is Forever Kingdom by Agetec/From Software. I've seen only one copy in the last year. It was released back in 2002.

I'd cast my vote for these as being rare:

Shin Megamei Tensei: Nocturne
Grandia Xtreme
Suikoden III
Tsugunai Atonement
Skygunner
Winback: Covert Operations
Mystic Heroes
Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
Gradius III & IV
Wizardy - Tale of the Forsaken Land
Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII
Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII
Vampire Night
Rez
Mr. Mosquito (only Eidos Fresh game that is close to rare)

I am also thinking Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigino Dungeon will be rare too.

A few of you said Bombastic and Ring of Red. Bombastic is still available new at practically every Gamestop I walk into for $19.99. I picked up my copy at Kohl's last week for $9.99 new. Ring of Red, while old, is also practically available at every Gamestop I walk into; of course they are used copies.

As far as PAL ones go, they are starting to appear gradually!

Space Channel 5 Part 2 is an obvious rare, as it never got a UK release.

I had five copies of that in work all pal, they did however get recalled by the publisher about two months ago.
