i was just wondering what peoples opinions on what games are starting to become rare for the ps2.its at that point in its lifecycle where games can be considered rare i imagine.off the top of my head the only game i can think of that may be hard to find is klonoa 2,but im sure someone could take that theory away.

Klonoa was rereleased at $19.99 a while back (non-GH) but fell off the map again. I place it on the 'hard to find' rather than the 'rare'.
I was actually thinking of starting to go for the complete PS2 lot before sanity (read: my wallet) kicked me in the face, but here's some data I gathered while researching.
So far the obscure ones (in terms of finding it by simply walking into *any* game store) are:
- Gradius III + IV
- Guilty Gear X and XX
- Klonoa 2
- Ring fo Red (starting to be...)
- Rez
- Simpsons Road Rage (Non GH version)
- NHL 2004: The original cover version, with the black/orange jersey guy
- Eidos' Fresh Games (Mad Maestro, Mad Mosquito)
- The Konami ESPN sports games...
Like I said, I wouldn't classify these as rare, just a pain in the butt to track down, especially REZ.

It's a little early to speculate on future PS2 rarities, but I think Rez could be considered one. Also, I never see P.T.O IV or Naval Ops anywhere (other than in my own personal collection). The horse racing sims Gallop Racer 2001, 2003 and G1 Jockey 3 are a few I rarely see. I also have a good feeling that Disaster Report and Fatal Frame I & II might be sought after and tough ones to find in the future.

- Klonoa 2
Klonoa 2??
I wasn't aware that there were two releases of Klonoa for the PS2.
I know it's not called Klonoa 2.
Are you just referring to it as 2, because there was a Klonoa for PS1?
Just clarifying.

I find Mad Maestro a heck of a lot more than Mr. Mosquito. In fact, I've never even SEEN a Mr. Mosquito around here.

It's been a while since I checked my copy, and I stand corrected.
It's called Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
Just goes to show that I have less memory as I grow older... O_O

I've got both of those games. Everyone, do yourselves a favor and get your grubbly little paws on a copy of Mr. Mosquito. It's a total blast (if only the second one was coming to the states). I completely SUCK at Mad Maestro though (even in kid mode), but it dosen't really keep me from enjoying the hell out of it!

Mr. Mosquito is one of my favorite PS2 games. I have so much fun with that game. Intresting concept to. Not easy to find, try to get it before you can't. I payed $50 for mine, couldnt find it any cheaper.

I was just thinking abou this today at work. The Playstation 2 has been out long enough for some rare to start shining through. I was looking through eBay and a game I had never heard of before kept coming up. It sells quite well.
Disgaea
Granted I don't follow new releases the way I used. Either way, I know nothing about this one. Here are some of my other picks of future rarities.
RPG Maker 2
Escape From Monkey Island (maybe rare or htf)
Gitaro Man
Mr Mosquito
I see Mad Maestro all over the place in discount blister packs for $19.99 Canadian. I rare see it used though. That may be a regoinal thing becuase I used to see Bubble Bobble on the PS1 in the blister packs as well. I owned 28 of them at one time but they were sold before it shot up in price.

Disgaea, christ, they already DID a second run on it and it's STILL going for over $50 on ebay.
Rez, Disgaea, Fatal Frame, Suikoden 3, Suikoden 4(it's not even out yet, but come on, the series is ALWAYS underprinted and oversought)

I'm looking for all three of those myself....anyone got em? :D
PTO IV is getting there, as are Disgaea, Rez, and a few others. I also espect Wizardry: Tales of the Forsaken Land to be rare, along with Bombastic.

Woody Woodpecker: Escape From Buzz Buzzard Park - a WORKING copy mind you! The first run of these were all defects...you couldn't get past level 3-4 I believe, not sure off hand, but then they had to be shipped back to be replaced with good copies. After the initial shipment I never seen them again. *smiles while looking at my working copy*
Cubix: Robots For Everyone - Blockbuster exclusive! So, yeah, it will be at least hard to find.
That's all I can think of off hand.
Disgaea has sold close to 100,000 copies so it's more of a common but popular game than a really rare one (it will get a euro release as well). However due to it being a surprise hit the strategy guide (which only had a printrun of 10,000 copies) has become sought after, often going for $50 - $60.

I lucked out and found a minty fresh 2001 at a local GameRush store for $10. I've you've got any of those stores near you, check them out...they've got some good deals. (Also scored mint copies of Suikoden for $6 and Fatal Frame for $16 there)
My TRU has a huge basket full of Monkey Islands (and Mad Maestros), so I don't know if I'd call them rare yet. Ico was one I used to think was rare but after finally getting a PS2, I'd see it everywhere when I was shopping for games.
Oh yeah, what about Ephemeral Fantasia (Konami)? I've read it's a somewhat generic RPG, but I've never even heard of that game until I saw it last week at a used DVD/CD store.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is, almost 100% sure.
Anyways, I agree with Ephemeral Fantasia....I've only seen it once and I bought it when I did. Also some more to add to the list...
AirBlade - I haven't seen this since EB cleared them out at 4.99 a long time back. I think this will be a HTF more than a rare
Antz Extreme Racing - It sucks, yes, but it's a "value game" and only in select stores. I don't see much selling, if any, and I doubt many will get made.
Beyond Good And Evil - WAY to early to tell, but I don't think a game that isn't selling well and was dropping in price so fast will actually be abundant in copies down the line.
Britney's Dance Beat - Try to find this game! It's nowhere! Probably due to the fact most people won't buy a Britney Spears themes game....except me. :)
Disney's Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers - You just don't see this anymore...which sucks cause it was a fun game!
Tarzan Untamed - Same as Goin' Quackers above
Disaster Report - Kinda hard to find, will obviously get harder to find later on.
Eve Of Extinction - Fun game, but you just dont see it anywhere.
Galerians: Ash - For a pretty new game you don't see it often. Too bad this sucked, I had so many hopes for this.
Harvest Moon: Save The Homeland - just a HTF game at most.
Metropolismania - See "Antz Extreme Racing"
Monsters Inc. - Same a "Goin' Quackers" Above - cept this one sucks
Okage: Shadow King - Im on the line about this one, not too sure if it will even be HTF.
Road Trip - See "Antz Extreme Racing"
Shadow Of Destiny - Short but sweet....then you don't see it anymore.
Space Channel 5: Special Edition - Too early to tell, I just have a hunch about this one.
Stretch Panic - Though it sucked, again, you cant find it.
Taz: Wanted - Where did this game go?
The Adventures of Cookie and Cream - another HTF
Unison - I expect this one to be really hard to get, I havent seen it in 2 years!
Yanya Caballista City Skater - I found one other copy other than the one I originally bought new...it's at a gamestore near me for 4.00. lol other than that never seen it since.

Buy.com is backordered on rez. Also, I thought we were talking future rarities. You can find ANY PS2 game if you look for it right now, and you probably won't have to pay much more than full price.

does anyone have a count of how many ps2 releases there has been in the us so far?
PapaStu
03-14-2004, 05:49 AM
If the numbers ive last heard were right, somewhere around 600 (making me 1/3 or the way there currently LOL oh god shoot me this and the PSOne collections will kill me). Numbers are really hard to pull down because so many games are still dropping every week. But im sure that there is a few people that are on the web who got their ducks in a line and have them all listed.
Hmmmmm Rare titles.... an interesting question, give me a little time and i will compile my list.
Kaine23: Mr. Mosquito and Mad Maestro were games put out by Eidos's Fresh Games Label, a sub-label devoted to bringing out some quirky Japanese titles to the Mainstream US market. So far there are only 5 total titles R-Type Final, Legaia 2, Mr. Mosquito, and Mad Maestro for the PS2, and Swingers Golf for the GCN. In Mr. Mosquito you play as a mosquito whos job is to torment a Japanese family, this game is hilarious. Mad Maestro is a music repetition type game, think Parappa or Umjammer Lammy, just harder and with better music.

I'll try to sort through the games that might have some common misconceptions....
Gallop racer 2001 is not rare at all... I think people get this mixed up with 2003
G1 jockey is uncommon - expensive but much easier to find than gallop racer 2003
Gallop racer 2003 is rare
PTO IV is uncommon
EDIT: I just skimmed the internet and it seems that gallop racer 2003is being sold quite a bit just at a high price now and G1 jockey is harder to find online. However My experience in stores has been that G1 jockey is plentiful and gallop racer 2003 does not exist. A few months back gallop racer 2003 was hard to find on even ebay.

What makes you so sure about the rarity of Gallop Racer series? It's not that I'm saying you are wrong, but I haven't even SEEN a Gallop Racer 2001(aside from ebay) until last week. Even if you are using Ebay as a gauge, there were only fifteen 2001's that came up while while doing a search of completed listings (about half of which were PAL copies) as compared to 40+ 2003's (all NTSC). I see allot more copies of 2003, locally and ebay, than I do of 2001.
I've only seen 1 copy of G1 Jockey 3 ever for sale in the wild and that was new at EB. Actually, someone on the boards here said G1 Jockey had one of the lowest print runs of any PS2 game. I can't remember who said it but I think they were connected to the industry, so their info might be credible.

G1 jockey and gallop racer 2003 are about equal in rarity I'd say on average. A few months ago gallop racer was much harder to find, but now it seems G1 jockey is a bit harder to find. Though I still know of stores that sell G1 jockey but not gallop racer 2003.
As for gallop racer 2001, the company still sells the game at their own website (as of about a week ago, not sure about today) I wouldn't consider a game sold at the companies website to be rare still.
I can think of a few games that are harder to obtain than any of those three games though.

Just a heads up if anyone wants Mad Maestro, TRU has a deal where you buy any value priced ps2 or ps1 game you get the second one free at the same or lower price. Mad Maestro was only $9.99. So if you can find another game at $9.99, you get 'em $5 a piece. The value software runs from $9.99 to $19.99.

*Tossing in my 2 cents on what i feel is rare*
Alot of the earlier and launch stuff is kind of hard to find... Fantavision, Shadows of Destiny, The Bouncer...
Almost all of the Sega released stuff is ni on annoying to get... Rez, Gunblaze, Shinobi, Virtual-on Marz, Aero Elite Combat Academy, Nightshade (give it a few more months) and even Sega Bass Fishing. The stuff just disapears, never to re-appear...
Ive also noicted that most of the early RPG's arnt out there in huge numbers either. Grandia Xtreme, Grandia 2, Jade Coccoon 2.
Of course Klonoa 2, and Rez are really hard to get. What about Escapse from Monkey Island, Magic Pengel, Rygar... theres quite abit of annoying stuff to try and get.
Note that im not saying that these titles are impossible to get, but they can pose a decent challenge.

Cmosfm said Yanya Cabalista Skater might be rare, and he was right but there are 2 versions. The first printing was packaged in a cardboard box with the fingerboard that attaches to the controller, and I think that version will be the rare one.

I picked up Mad Maestro at TRU's B1G1 sale and it worked out to $5, but that doesn't always mean it won't be rare. They didn't have a ton of them and it's the only place I've seen it. However, I would like to get my hands on Mr. Mosquito. As well, I'm not sure if the comment about Britney's Dance Beat was a joke or not but my Wal-mart has it for $14.96 and I usually figure, things that are sold at walmart......will never have a future. They buy in such large quantities that they wouldn't even bother with something if they couldn't get a ton of it. Just my opinion and I could be wrong. So, who has Mr. Mosquito.
One last thing, My blockbuster has Cubix for PS2 with the attached DVD for $9.99 or $14.99 new. Should I get it?

I wouldn't really put Rez on hard to find or rare. Maybe just uncommon as I see it almost everywhere I go. Gitaroo-Man, Klonoa 2, and Escape From Monkey Island are a whole different story though. Ill admit i dont really go out and look for it, but i rarely see it in the used sections, as i go through those all the time... And after i got The Bouncer, i really stopped looking for it. It was best to put that out of my memory.
I really like Fantavision, though it is WAAAAY to short for sure. there is really Zero replay value to that game. But the lights are so pretty! :D
Suikoden III isnt all that uncommon....Its out there in decent numbers... It acts more like Suikoden I than II, Give it a few years, and it will hold decent value, much as Suikoden I does...
Both Road Trip AND Seek And Destroy (Road Trip with Tanks!!!!) are super fun. After i got Road Trip i played that game an incredible amount. I got a few hours into Seek & Destroy, and i somehow missed saving, so all of my gameplay was a waste, and ive not picked it up again out of frustration.

So whats the going rate on the game where you are at?
I don't think Seek And Destroy is half as good, though it was an OK way to spend an afternoon. A single afternoon -- it's really short.
In Road Trip I did 99% of everything and only got stuck at the end, where I needed to find the 5 or 6 cars (in the world) I hadn't talked to yet. Needless to say, near-impossible and stupid-frustrating. I'd really like to unlock the last items, too.
PapaStu
03-18-2004, 12:37 AM
@ BenT: I'd think that the talking to the cars would be the annoying catch to stopping 100% completion. Thats disapointing that S&D is that short, Cause in some random way RoadTrip is so damn long. Where exactly in the Bay Area are you? Im SanJo/Fremont.
@ Cmosfm: Go back and pick up EverBlue 2, Its not all that common, but ive got the feeling that Capcom will have it on their website forever, (Like Star Gladiator) And Bombastic for cheap?? Get that one too, a good puzzle game, and if it turns out anything like Devil Dice, it will be horribly hard to get in the coming future

Metropolismania, Harvest Moon, Mr. Misquito, Mad Maestro (not as much as the others) can be found usually in the $20 bins at Walmart, TRU, Meijers (they are usually in the generic plastic hangers)
Didn't Suikoden 3 recieved a second print run last summer?
I have yet to see more copies of Yanya Callistaba (sp.) in my area. I picked it up upon release on a whim with the cardboard box and mini controller. Also picked up Gallop Racer 2001 upon release and I haven't seen any Gallop Racers or G1 jockey in my area for months.
IIRC, Ephermal Phantasia had a talking guitar and you could use the Konami Guitar Freaks guitars. :)

The PAL versions of XII Stag and Energy Airforce are next to impossible to find - they seem to have only been released in Italy so far, but apparently they will be distributed in other European countries in the near future.
I also haven't seen most of Phoenix Games' later releases anywhere, online or off - this isn't really a big loss unless you're a PS1/2 completist, considering that the majority of them are crap, but they also published Sonic Wings Special and Buttsubushi (which, incidentally, was the tenth best PS1 game ever released, according to Official UK PlayStation Magazine).
Possibly the rarest PAL game, if any copies made it out, is Polaroid Pete (English PAL version of Gekisha Boy 2). JVC Music Europe, its publisher, disappeared around the time this game was due to be released - but apparently a few copies were given away in a magazine contest, and a few more may have gained limited distribution in parts of Europe.
Akira Psycho Ball, Mobile Light Force 2, Flipnic, Bomberman Kart and Psyvariar are also pretty hard to find in my experience.

maybe a package variation will be 'rare'.
When the Suffering came out last week, we gave away NFRS copies of Midway Arcade Treasures.
Certainly the game won't be rare, but the package variation could atleast be uncommon.

What about Slipheed: The Lost Planet?
That one is still ALL OVER. TRU has a ton of them as part of that Budget 2for1 blowout.
Package variation on Midway Arcade Treasures??? Never seen one. Dont forget the Tetris Plus Alternate cover. And the GH variant for Twisted Metal Black, where the new one comes with the TMB:Online as part of it (but im not sure if its ones disc or two.

I've got two tetris plus games, but they are both the same original release version because that seemed to be the rarest version (gold cover and GH are pretty easy to find) Anyway Yeah I've seen that TM:Black GH version with the online version in it as well, been thinking of getting it just to have it.
As for the alternate cover of midway arcade treasures. It says promotional copy on the barcode and it also covers the image of joust on the front saying "promotional copy
not for resale"
Not sure if it is labeled on the disc or manual though because i'm keeping it sealed.

Mobile Suit Gundam Zeonic Front is one I hardly ever see. Wizardry Forsaken land and Navel Ops are two more hard to find games. Rez I never see and when I do I usually grab it($39.99 Canadian used)

To the person who asked, I'd say SkyGunner would be more uncommon. I see it every rare now and then for about 30 bucks, but not often. You shouldget it regardless though, fun game.
Am I the only one who has a problem consistently finding Half-Life? I only see it in about 1 out of 5 stores I check and mostly they're preowned copies that are in **** condition, I just found a good one at EB the other day. Same with Deus Ex.
Edit: Also, what about Mobile Light Force 2? You know, when XS games released 2 shooters, one for PSX and one for PS2, with terrible cover art? I bet that might be a bit scarce some day.

I've just started getting PS2 games, and so far, most games are not hard to find (compared to Neo-Geo) if you're willing to put the money down, most are still available at slightly above regular retails, I don't consider any game rare when there're 10 copies on eBay, even if the prices are high, most games are just uncommon. However, there're a few games that stand out as truly rare titles:
REZ - should've picked this even w/o PS2, just got a sealed copy for $70 and I felt very lucky.
Gradius 3/4 - can't even find like new copy,
Gallop Racer 2003
Sky Gunner - very scarce, even on eBay
PTO 4
Ring of Red
From my Dreamcast collecting experience, I tend to buy Capcom and any 2D/anime-style RPG games as soon as they come out, especially those niche titles. For PS2, I've noticed most games published by Sega, Capcom, Atlus, Koei, as well as RPGs and 2D fighters tend to disappear off the store shelve quicker, these games are keepers, people buy them and don't bring them back for trade-ins.
I also find ToysRUs my VERY, VERY fav game store by miles, in the last 5 years they carry and hang on to games most retail chains ignore, from VB, Saturn, SNES, N64, GG, and up recently, Dreamcast. Recently when I started looking for uncommon and niche PS2 titles, it's the only store I can find carrying Guilty Gear X/X2, music games, RPGs. Unlike others who have mostly piles of sports and mindless gorefest titles (GTA, Manhunt), I don't know how my gaming life is like if TRU goes under, buying games online is just different.
i had a hard time finding jade cocoon 2 at a decent price

Xenu, I've constantly seen Jade Cocoon 2 in the dump bin at Circuit City. I'd say try one of those stores.

Has anyone heard of the upcoming game developed by Nippon Ichi - La Pucelle (coming soon - Phantom Brave)? Same developer who made Disgaea, I wonder if this game will be made in very limited run.
