I know I have asked for pics of these before, but I searched and can't find the thread. Someone here sent the pics of the three different Xbox drives-Thomson, Samsung, Philips. Could you please resubmit those pics? Thanks!!

From most reliable and sought after to the least:

Samsung
Philips
Thomson

I actually have a spare Samsung I'm willing to trade away, but I need something special for it. :-P

A NEO AES shooter would cover the drive, and I could toss in some cash. :D

My original XBOX had a phillips but now it has the samsung. It's night & day when comparing compatibility.

The only thing is, buy samsung tray on the inside is grey.. and not black. :D

Yes.. I did the Samsung PC mod.. looks great, and works with everything! Not bad for 25$.

Mines a Thomson also. I have a launch Xbox (or close to).
I did order the Halo LE Xbox from Bestbuy.com, but it is on backorder (hope it actually comes!!) If and when that arrives, I REALLY hope it has a Samsung in it!! My launch Thomson has been fine so far, but I know the Samsung is the cream of the crop! I think M$ should have made the LE Halo editions of the Xbox with ONLY the Samsung!! They are only making so many, so why not go with top quality? M$ has to know the Samsungs are way better right?

There's no way you can tell what drive is in your XBox until you take it home and open it up, huh?

What is Microsoft using for the brand new XBox's?

Well I believe there is a way to check serial numbers on the outside of the box, but I am not sure of the #'s for the specific drives. From what everyone is saying M$ is STILL using all three different drives in the new Xbox's!! That would be simply stupid in my opinion!

Mine's a Phillips. 2002 Xbox from the "Sega GT/JSRF combo".

It's just luck of the draw. It doesn't really matter when your Xbox was made, or with what combo package, they used 3 different companies to make the drives then, and they still do now apparently. I have read 9 out of 10 Xbox's have Thomsons in them (I believe I read this in Gamepro a few months back) and 1 out of ten is Philips or Samsung. So consider yourself quite lucky if you have one with a Philips or Samsung! I on the other hand am one of the many unlucky ones with a Thomson--but mine is 2 years old, and still working fine--I have only had it freeze up a time or 2, and I think those were demos.....

my romwhore edition xbox has a phillips drive and it refuses to read CvS2, and has trouble reading other games too. Just got the Halo xbox, also a phillips, reads CvS2, hope it stays that way.

Well be glad you didn't get Thomson--I'd take a Philips over a Thomson in a heartbeat, and be thankful for it!
