I don't know if anyone has mentioned this already, but on a recent episode of The Screen Savers, they described how to modify an XBox to run Linux, without having to crack open the system. It's a little complicated, but it sounds like it's worth the effort... especially if you don't want to risk damaging your system with a mod chip.

This mod has been around for a long time. Check www.xbox-scene.com they have tutorials on how to do everything to an xbox.

Playing with your TSOP is definitely NOT risk free.
I fix failed attempts all the time. When your Box shows only a white screen and refuses to boot, the risk didn't pan out. LOL

Im kinda gonna have to disagree as well on the safer part. As long as you don't mega fuck the flash just clipping in a solderless chip is safer.

My vote is to use the font exploit instead of messing with the flash. 8-) Replace a couple of font files (make sure to backup the orginals) and each time your X-Box goes to the dashboard it loads EvoX or Xlinux (depending on file).
What's really cool is that you don't need any games or extra hardware other than a PC if you're willing to open (but not solder to) your Xbox.

I have an XBit in mine - it takes about 15 minutes for the installation, and costs around $50. Definetly better than "soft" modding it - I didn't want to take the chance of hosing the whole thing up via software and not be able to fix it.

I have no electrical or soldering skills, but I was able to do a mod using the Chameleon chip and upgrade the HD. It was relatively easy due to the tutorials and forums at xboxscene. If you can open up a PC and swap HDs, install RAM, etc., you can most likely successfully mod your xbox.
