I have often said that the Death battle in Castlevania I is FAR harder than Dracula. I hold the same for Dracula's Curse. If you don't have the boomerang cross, forget it.

I've also found Frankenstien to be really hard in the first game unless you have holy water.

On another tangent, Super Ghosts N' Ghouls, can you recommend a good strategy guide for SotN? I have a really crappy "unofficial" Prima guide that really blows. Is there a better one?

Death isn't that bad in the first one. You can abuse the holy water like with other bosses.

Personally the guides for SOTN at gamefaqs are just as good as any guide books. The only thing you miss out on is some of the art work and maps.

lol, wow i didn't expect to start so much anti-SCV4 talk, it is a really good game. and most definitely a fun one. the soundtrack rocks, there's alot of stages, it makes great use of the snes's power (another example would be r-type 3 which i have yet to get very far in), and it did very well to in breaking out of the same game type (cv, cv3, chronicles all play very simliar to each other). i know cv4 is a remake of cv and chronicles, essentially and timeline, but it did re-invent the series a bit.

on the other hand tho, the bosses are quite lame and easy, there's a few boring stages, and the slowdown is horrible, to the point it ruins the game for me (everybody has a different threshold, i'm not arguing). the slowdown is noticeably decreased on an emulator tho. and I"VE HEARD THAT the jp import has less slowdown...but i've yet to have anyone confirm this...please do so now if you know this to be true or not.

chronicles on one hand has weird looking sprites for the main charactor, good soundtrack, not as good as cv4 imo, a bit cheap at times (stage2 on the raft on original anyone?), overly difficult platforming jumping, and that ultra japanese dollhouse stage...um...

but if you don't like the werewolf bossfight, well, i think you're crazy, that boss rocks...jumping around throwing clock pieces at you, i imagine that was utilizing the x6800 graphics very nicely. all the bosses rock in that game, that was what cv was all about, sweet ass boss fights. the doppleganger was fun too, with megaman type patterns, and the whole game gave me a very nostalgic feel with the original castlevania.

i like both, alot, i just think chronicles is a bit less flawed, and harder to pick up on any given saturday. ok, i shut up now.

Yeah, as much as I use the internet for strategy guides and such, there is nothing quite like having a physical book there in front of you to pour through and look at and read, etc.

And don't get me wrong, I think the Werewolf boss is bitchin', its just that right now he's kicking my tuchas.

Best SotN strat guide at GameFAQS is the one written by ZKeene.

Let's see..I Had another, the pages were in black and white, a thick book...forgot who published it...lord it was weak...there was so many errors on Monster's stats.

I remember the Prima book...but I forgot who had the best one..It had the same cover of the game manual as well...that's the one you should find.

To report something I should have done a year ago...

I finally bought CastleVania: Lament of Innocence...the 18th game of our beloved series...the ONLY castlevania I have never played....

My first impression was "Please god don't let this suck" because Im usually anti-3D....but...holy SHIT!!!

The SOTN Crew strikes again...wow...the gameplay is amazing...feels like SOTN..acts like SOTN at times with hidden rooms and such....but wow what a HUGE place to explore!

The soundtrack is beautiful...I love the remix of "Crystal Teardrops" in the underground water cavern...just wait a few minutes and listen carefully..it's there...thank you Konami for giving a few remixes..

Yet the biggest thing I can't get over...the detail...amazing...everything is wonderful...almost to that of Silent Hill detail...the trees look real...the hallways..even the monsters have excellent detail.

Finally, a 3D CastleVania that works!...Even the save point makes me just go "Damn.."

Ah, so many Castlevania fans from this community. :)

I agree, Lament of Innocence is impressive, and is one of the better Castlevania titles out there. However, it's actually rather underrated, as almost every opinion I see points out that it lacks good level design, and there's too much emphasis on the battles. So? To me, the levels look fantastic, and so do the enemies. Plus, this is one of the hardest Castlevanias that I've played in a while, the most difficult since Circle of the Moon. The boss fights are just impressive, and most of them will often take more than one try before you finally beat them. Did I mention that the game is somewhat similar to Devil May Cry? Nothing wrong with that, it has more than enough to make it not seem like a ripoff, and...

Uh oh. I'm ranting again. :D

Another thing: SCV4 is one of my personal favorites in the series, and it's in my top five Castlevania games. One of the first titles for the SNES, and still one of the best. I can't think of many games that use Mode 7 as well as stage 4 of SCV4. The Rotating Chamber = AWESOME.

If you look at the disc in the right light you can see that it is died red instead of black. Very cool little extra.

I think it just had to do with the cd's konami was using. I held suikoden up to the light the other day to check for scratches on it and it was also reddish.

thing i hated about LoI was the repetitiveness of the level layout

room -> hall -> room -> hall

True...and I'm find that "Fight all the monsters to get to the next room" is becoming a rerun

The wife and I have been toying around with picking up LoI, but can't seem to find it at any of the local discount stores (Wal-mart, etc.) looks like we'll have to go to an EB or some such.

I'm glad to hear that its good in the same vein as SotN. Hopefully we will find it soon.

SuperGNG, I'll keep an eye out for that Guide with the manual cover. Hope I can find it. The Prima guide was horrid.

Oh, and as an update, made it past the Werewolf today on Original but NOT on Arrange (odd eh?). Now I'm trying to reach the Doppleganger! Wee.

I really enjoyed Lament of Innocence as well. Great graphics and music, good gameplay, some hard battles, just about the right difficulty level. Does'nt break into my top five Castlevania games, but comes close. And some nice background on how the whole Belmont legacy got started.

Yeah, some of the battles repeat, but when you go back to stages to finish them off just run from most of the battles.

Doppler Ganger...that dude was so silly...word of advice...do NOT have any sub-items on you...no holy water...no knife, etc....because the Doppler loves to throw crap..you gotta play a game of leap frog with him..use the platform to help you...when you jump on the platform, get ready for him to jump on it...then you jump off and hit him while you turn around quickly...then repeat in cycle...he'll go down asap

Yup dead on...and depending who you changed between characters, it did the same thing..

Btw the BEST Symphony of the Night Guide book is made by BRADY games. I finally remembered!

I finished LoI the other day....the ending could have been better...but god I enjoyed this one alot....but the most pain in the ass part...was fighting BEELZEBUB....God that boss is impressive...if it's one thing Konami loves...it's a big ass intro to show off a boss..

Crazy Mode in the game is evil...I can't even get passed 3 or 4 doors because of the re-arranged monster positions

finally tracked down Lament of Innocence today. Its incredible. Its everything Castlevania 64 wished it could be!

I know a lot of you are balking at all the hallways and such, but I think its pretty true to the Castlevania spirit. I mean, I was ALL OVER the Castle in SotN, and can tell you how to get from any one point to any other, and describe every room along the way. This seems no different to me.

I do miss the transporter, though.

Otherwise, Lament is a natural progression of the series and a blast to play. I made it to the Medusa Head boss tonight and she wiped the floor with me, mainly because I peed my pants when she came to life and attacked me. Hard to fight with pee pants.

Wonderful game. (I maybe could do with less Tomb Raider style jumps, especially with a fixed camera).

Last night was the first time I'd actually beaten the first stage in CC.

On a side note, I'm trying to figure out whether I should use my FYE store credit on Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Lament of Innocence, or Champions of Norrath. I need to base this decision on (1) which one will be potentially harder to acquire and (2) which is the most fun.

It's a tough choice, but I'd give the slight nod to Aria of Sorrow over Lament of Innocence. Both are eventuly worth getting, though.

Aria of Sorrow, since there seems to be an over flow of copies of Lament of Innocence..so it's your call.

Fixed camera angles did drive me buggy at times when the enemy is in front of the camera....

Medusa was badass, psst...*coughs* weakness is the Axe*coughs*....excuse me :)....but I will say the hallways did add alot to the actual feel of a real castle...but on the other hand was repetitive to death...and having to haul my butt to the west side of one area (Namely the Ghostly Theatre)

CastleVania 64 had potential...yet Konami themselves deny it's existance up and down....sometimes I don't blame them...I think it was a bit too early when it came...especially since it was released the next year after SOTN (Talk about a heavy burden to compete with)
