Here's a better question: what's with your signature being 50x larger than your message? That picture is massive overkill.

Ok, OK, I gotta confess ignorance...what is meant by the above quote? Is it a reference to the huge AYBABTU thing that went haywire around then (was it that long ago?!)

I found out about it in 2001...oh the embarrasment, the shame

Oh, and those are eggplants in the ending...sort of like a Monty Python style ending to a game that really looks more like Monty Python's Flying Circus (the game) than a highly stylish, manic Japanese horizontal shooter (which it sort of was trying to be).

Has anyone ever seen the internet flash movie where Papa Smurf and Cats from Zero Wing play the $20,000 Pyramid?

Best flash movie ever.

Oh HELL no. I haven't played many MD/Genesis shooters, but while they're all worse than the arcade originals/x68K and FM Towns ports, and I haven't played Divine Sealing (saw a screenshot at VG Museum, looked really bland - the flying portion, I mean; didn't see the rest but I've heard) nothing can be that much worse than this. I think the arcade version of EDF: Earth Defense Force thrashes this game's arcade version, and the MD version is pretty much a by-the-numbers schmup. Not terribly good or memorable outside of DANCING EGGPLANTS. And, er, THAT. Jeez, this game has ADD.

Well, I've played a ROM of it.....it's actually a decent shooter, not the best, but has some fun parts.

I thought everyone knew the story by now. LOL

Basicaly, the company was looking to export their Genesis game Zero Wing outside of Japan and that ment translating the intro into English. Being a poor company, they tried to save money by hiring someone who was taking English classes.

We all know how well THAT worked. LOL

But the game was only released in Europe. It never got a North American release. (I understand in Europe it's uncommon, as well.)

A year or so later, someone over here in the States saw the intro and away things went. :D

Yet it still wound up on G4(techTV)'s Filter for being one of the worst games of all-time. It was only because of the translation. Hardly anything was mentioned about the gameplay.

Oh, where was I? It's a pretty average Toaplan shooter, IMO.

I now have another reason to dislike G4.

Man that Filter episode was conpletely off base, I mean Shenmue like it or not should not be in contention for worst game of all time, especially not next to the attrocious wand of gamelon. As far as Zero Wing, it may qualify as worst engrish of all time, but the gameplay wasn't terrible, I kinda liked it. Dianne Mizota (or whatever her name is) is full of shit!

Well, alright...guess I'm adding in the Zero Wing anger to my review of the game :D

I really didn't see much redeeming about the shooter, though - little detailed sprites and tiles shouldn't be all a shooter has to offer, not on the Genesis...if that's all, how sad. There's really only a couple music tracks I liked, and I thought the latter levels were pretty awful. Still not a game I'd recommend, not with all the other shooters out there.

I thought the ability to capture enemy ships and use them as shields was kinda cool.

But the only shooter i have ever liked was "Lifeforce" so i'll never claim to be an expert on the games.

It's a pretty average-y shooter really - there are much better examples on the Megadrive, and a few poorer ones.
The Euro version is kinda uncommon rather than genuinely rare, but the price is still inflated due to the 'hype' about it.

Zero Wing isn't a bad game at all. Original? Not really. The best of its kind? Not at all. But certainly not crappy either. And I personally find that the Engrish gives it some charm.

BTW, for those who didn't know, the intro is only on the Megadrive port. The original arcade version didn't have any intro sequence.

Uhm.. Filter is based on VIEWER votes. I think she kinda' mentions that at the beginning and end of each and every show. So we've got no one to blame but ourselves. I believe Shenmue was also featured on one of the top ten "good games" shows a few weeks later.

I attribute this kind of flakiness to a society where WWF wrestling is king; Budweiser is called "beer"; and most of the yokuls get their political savvy from Fox news and The O'reilly Factor.

We deserve everything that is thrown our way.
