View Full Version : Nintendo Power Questions.
I was recently browsing at my local flea market and found a box of old Nintendo Power mags. They wanted .60 each on them so I bought them all. I have issue #3-35 now (missing just a few in between) and several of the strategy guides. Now I know there is the Final Fantasy #17 and Super Mario 3 #13 and Ninja Gaiden II #15. These seem to be the common ones. What I am trying to figure out is what are the other Stratagy Guides.
Also, does someone out there collect scans of the covers of the mags? Or do you know of a site that does. All I can come up with is people with just a few covers and scans of the inside of the mags. I'm mainly looking for a picture checklist if you will.
Any help guys?

The only other Strategy Guide is the 4 Player Extra (#19) it was my first issue...
Then where did the numbers come from?

They were doing them every other issue (mag/guide/mag/guide/etc.). They intended doing it for sometime, but I'm guessing that when they asked in the Player's Poll what people thought of the guides, they got a less than positive response. They cancelled the guides after the fourth and starting making it a monthly magazine.
As for a cover checklist, just get volume 100. It's got a picture of every cover up to 100 (obviously). They're at the bottom corner of each page, and if you can get an issue that still has the poster, they're on that too (and much bigger).
They also at one point made a checklist for subscribers. I believe it was for the first 50 issues. No pictures, but it did list every issue, all the games covered in each issue, special articles, and page/volume numbers for all info to easily find whatever article or coverage you want.

Also try grand nestral station for NP cover scans (use Google, I don't know the link).
I've got a Nintendo Power Index that covers issues 1-70. The NES era ends at 67 so this is all I really care about, but it would be nice to get an NP index that covers 1-100. Does such an index exist?

The numbering of NP is a bit complicated. I just cut and paste from a NP file I did years ago:
Publications: Until May/June 1990 NP was published bi-monthly. In a transition phase from June until December 1990 four Player Guides were published in between the regular NP issues. From January 1991 on NP was published monthly.
Volume numbering: The regular NP issues don’t have an official volume number until July/August 1990; they were numbered according the month of publication. From Sept./Oct. 1990 on (vol. 16 ) official volume numbers were introduced; however, for the four Player Guides (vol. 13, 15, 17, 19) official volume numbers were introduced earlier.
In short, official volume numbers for the actual mag were introduced with the issue September/October 1990 (volume 16); but the early two player guides (Super Mario 3 and Ninja Gaiden 2, volumes 13 and 15 respectively) got official volume numbers before they were introduced for the actual mag.
Weird and complicated. :)

Nope, NP did an official index for the first 50, 60, and 70 volumes. Then they stopped doing it. Well, you have to make your own index. :) (which would be incredibly helpful)

I don't know how I missed it. The holes that are in my issues were the stratagy guides. I should have paid more attention to the numbers on the guides.
