View Full Version : Replacing the motor in a Famicom Disk System?

I've got an FDS from the forum member 'spoon" that I traded for... he told me that the system booted up fine, but it wouldn't read any disks (but it would try). I opened it up today, right after it came, to try to find a solution, which I think I have: the motor has been worn down (used) too much and can not spin fast enough. I am getting error #22 when I put disks in. This is the only cause of the problem that I can think of--I already cleaned the "disk-reading piece of metal" with no luck. Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone know where I can get another motor?

Floppy drive motors are usually operated at around 300rpm and with 5v. But as you'll have to open the drive anyways, check the motor for more accurate info and measure if the voltage is anywhere near the specified.
Some old PC floppy drives could be a good source for motors if you can't find them in electronics shops.

Ok, I'll try that. When you say "floppy drive"... you mean 3.5 inch disks, right?

Either will probably have suitable motors but I'd go for 5.25" if possible. They're more likely to have one to fit the physical size as they fall into the same era with FDS.

You'll have to tune the motor. I doubt there is a problem with it, it just has to be tuned...this topic has come up many times before in this forum

I don't feel like reading through them all, and I know I missed some, but I think you'll find what you need in those.

First, CLEAN THE DISK HEAD. Most people I tell this to don't, and just try tuning the motor all damn day. Strange but true...

Is the disk head the little shiny metal piece that "reads" the bottom of the disk? If it is, then, trust me... I've cleaned that a lot.

Yeah, that's the part. Sometimes replaceing th belt is all you need..no motor adjustment necessary...but usually not.

Geez I've wanted a FDS, but I didn't realize this thing was so fragile.
