10 is ok.
12 Sucks.
Pick up Final Fantasy Anthology for PS. ( Has FF 3 known as VI )
Play FF 3 and FF 7.
The ps2 ones kinda blow compare to the older ones.
Also, try chrono trigger.
chrono trigger is the snes one right?
chross is the psx sequel, right?

Yeah.
But they re-released Chrono Trigger + FF 4 remixed ( Prev ff II ) as Final Fantasy Chronicles for the playstation. You can pick up this one game for like 20 bucks as a greatest hits brand new.

Chrono Chross is a really good game and I really hope to get all this FF stuff straightend out so I can play some great RPGs :)

Trying to tell you which ones to play is kinda like asking someone for their favorite song, or art piece -- you'd get 100 different answers from 100 different people. ;)
Personaly, I enjoy each and every FF game -- but then, I'm a huge nut of the series. :D
But tell us more about what you're looking for. Do you enjoy complex games or simple ones? Detailed plot or hardly any plot at all? Graphics and FMV's important? Do you care if you play the original, the remake, or a translated ROM ona e mulator? Do you prefer older style RPG's or the newer ones?
The series has been around so long, and there have been so MANY different things done, there's at least ONE game out there we can direct you to and that you'll probaly enjoy. I've never met anyone who has'nt liked at least ONE of the 15 official FF games. (RPG haters aside, that is. ;) )

I too would recommend FF3/6. I'm a big RPG fan, but I think FF7 sucks a big one. I also don't think too highly of FF8 to the present games, but I've been smart enough to not subject myself to playing through the whole games when I know the chances of me despising the games is very high. However, my opinion is not the norm, so you very well may enjoy them. Judging by how you like Chrono Cross (which I didn't like much besides the character artwork and some of the music), the modern ones probably are more up your alley.
If you like FF3/6, do give the older ones a try. There are official US versions of all but the real FF3.

Oh yeah you should also check out the uber awesome final fantasy tactics. It's not a rpg per say (it's a srpg), but i wouldn't argue if it was called the best game to ever bear the FF name.
Well since you put it that way SoulBlazer....
A good RPG to me has to have some key points to me...
A good storyline is a must, cinematics all through the game bring life to a games and graphics..dont matter to me really, finally gameplay mechanics and overall it needs to have some good characters in it.

Psst....I happen to agree with her. :D
(I don't hate FF7, I just don't have it 1st in my list of FF games)
But yeah, I'd say FF4 and 6 are probaly good games to start with, if you're not addicted on things like graphics. Great stories, great music, great characters, and really fun game play. Both games were recently re-released with some bonsues for the PSX.
For the more modern ones -- FF9 is a good mesh between the old style and the new style. FF7 is fun but a damn confusing story and it looks REALLY BAD now. I personaly love FF 8 to death, but it's a different game. And 10 is a good game to get started on cause it's easy to play and not all that complicated. 5, and the NES ones, I'd only suggest to someone who is a vet to RPG's.

If you listen to them and pick up the SNES versions of Chrono Trigger and FF3 you're out 80-100 bucks. But if you have the cash definately pick them up. I love them both also Mario RPG was good. Another good one if i am thinking of the right game and title is Illusuins of Gaia. Someone can tell you if im right or wrong i havent played it in years so i might be wrong. Earthbound was good. Between those 4 games you're spending about $140-$170+ (cart only would have to be cheaper) If you have the money they are well worth it if you dont have the money i suggest roms. (Can i or is that not allowed???)

One of my personal favorites is FFVIII. I'd reccomend it, but here are some of its ups and downs:
ups:
killer graphics for Playstation
cool characters
cool weapons
average:
battle system is fun, but magic is kinda useless
junctioning system: kinda complex. It's completely the opinion of the gamer on this one
diversity: lots of stuff to do, lots of stuff to find/collect. Your call
downs:
plot-wise, this game isn't too great (well, i never finished it. I'm almost done). Plot is where it lacks. But its still incredibly fun and kickass in my opinion

Yeah, that's basicaly right. You have FF X-2, which is a sequel to FF X, and also Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, which are turn based strategy games, and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, a kind of 'kid' FF game. 11 is online only -- if you like MMORPG's, it's a good one. 12 should be out next year, and it's a single player one again.
Why don't you look me up on MSN or ICQ and I'll brief you on everything I know from one of the biggest fan boys on here? :D
Well it is going to be awhile before I even play one becuase I just bough Ocarina of Time and A Link To The Past and I am really determined when I get them to beat the hell out of them...game wise LOL

Well, if you have emulators, I'd suggest downloading the ROM's for FF 1-6, and play each one for a few minutes. You'll hit half the series right there.
And as for the PSX/PS2 ones, rent them all one weekend, or borrow them from a friend, pop each one in, and play it for a hour or so.
From what you've told us, I'd suggest starting with 4 and/or 6, but I think you'd enjoy 8, 9, and 10 as well.

Chrono Trigger is great and all, but since he asked for advice on Final Fantasy games, that's what I'll throw in my two cents on.
First of all, unless you happen to own both a Famicom and Super Famicom, or a Honey Bee or some such device that allows you to play Japanese games on your NES/SNES, AND are able to read Japanese, it would make little sense to buy Final Fantasy II, III, and V in cartridge form. Your best bet would be to find the roms of these games, and then patches for them that translate the game into English. For convenience sake, here are the links to the patches you'll need:
Final Fantasy II and III (http://www.zophar.net/newtrans/?op=show&type=nes)
Final Fantasy V (http://www.zophar.net/newtrans/?op=show&type=snes)
Now, as for which game you should start with first... that's a tricky question to answer. I guess I could go with a few others in here and recommend you start with FF6(3US), because thats an awesome, awesome game, but then if I did that, and by some miracle you took my advice, and played it as your first FF game, your expectations might be a tad high of what to expect of the others(other older FF games, I have no experience with any of the 3d stuff, aside from VII), and they're probably not going to end up cutting it. So, instead, I'm going to offer you a few different routes you might want to take...
The "Purist" route
Start at the bottom, Final Fantasy I, and work your way right up on through them sequentially. This would require a pretty good deal of patience, but you'd probably gain a nice appreciation of the more outstanding titles because of it. If you're looking to play just the carts(minus the Japanese ones I mentioned earlier), then this might be a little harder to pull off, but with roms you could jump right in immediately, perhaps even buying some of the later titles in the meantime, so you can play at least a few on an actual console.
The "Instant Gratification" route
Play only the most revered titles. Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, as I said I have no experience beyond those ones, but from what I've heard I'd assume to go for Final Fantasy X after that. This is for maximum amount of fun with a minimal amount of effort. You might not end up appreciating the outstanding titles as much this way, but, since I don't know you, for all I know that could mean very little to you, and if you're just looking for a few great games to play, this is your ticket.
So, there you have it. I would say there is no "wrong" way to go about it, I like to keep in mind that different people are into different things, and go about such things in different ways. Thus, while it might be the most fun for some people to go through each and every title, others might find that boring, and just want to play some really good games.
The few things I've listed certainly aren't the only ways to go about it, either. But it's really the only kind of solid advice that I could feel confident giving to a stranger over the internet, so take it as you will. ;)
Oh yeah, and have fun.
those patches are errors when clicked.thanks for all the info :)

...So they are! Thanks for the heads-up. Links are fixed, they now go to the (slightly less convenient) respective translation sections for each of the systems on zophar, you might have to suffer some minor popup windows though.

I havent played X-2 for the PS2 so I wont coment on that. On the other hand.....
If you are looking for a great game, I'd recomend FF3 (FF6J) on the SNES as the first to look into. It has a re-release on the PS1 which does have longer loading times but is still nice. The story is very good and the graphics are impresive for a game on the SNES. The music was top notch as well.
FF2 (FF4J) would be a good second. Its also on a re-release for the PS1. The charcter count is somewhat limited and the selection of your party is totaly up to the story line but where some would say it forces you to play with certain charcters over personal favorites, I on the other hand see it as a way to broaden the story.
I wouldnt recomend FF7-FF9 on the other. Yes, each and every single one was a drastic improvment over the previous FF games in almost every single way posible. The graphics, the sound, and the length of time required to play the game. The thing is, some things were not. Story being the biggest. In 7 I found the charcters to be either typical or boreing. Sepheroth was a fairly good boss but in a way he was also a bit to sterotype for me. In 8, I hated most of the charcters. Poor poor squall, with all his problems. None of which were relatable or even interesting. Wow, I laughed, I cried, and then I understood and was bored. I did enjoy the way that magic was used on the other hand. Many complained that it forced them to not use magic. I on the other hand felt it forced them to use it wisely. I admit, I didnt expect much from 9. For once, I got exactly what I expected. Good graphics, lame story, and lots (and i do mean lots) of useless items and minigames.
Basicly, I'd recomend any of the PS1 re-releases as they contain all that was released domesticly on the SNES and NES shy of Mystic Quest (avoid at all costs). The graphics may not be grand, but the gameplay is definitly there.
Oh, and Final Fantasy Tactics may not be one of the main FF titles, but its DAMN good and I'd strongly recomend it. If not your first game after FFX, then make it one of your next 3.
Hope this helps some.

I really disagree about the PSX FF's. I love them and enjoy them just as much as the NES/SNES ones, maybe a little more in some cases. FF 8 I rank as my third favorite game of the series, due to many factors.
I agree with what one of the posters said about starting on the SNES ones, though. Perhaps starting on the PSX ones, or going in numerical order, is the best thing to do.

I heard from BalloonFight that I should get FF-X to start me out
Agree start EASY. FF10 is ridiculously easy to beat, and gamefaqs.com has a walkthrough for the puzzles:
FF10
Then play the BEST:
FF6
(aka FF3-US)
(aka Final Fantasy Anthology)
Then AVERAGE:
FF7
FF9
FF10-2
Skip the other Final Fantasies.
But if you have time try these Squaresoft RPGs too:
Parasite Eve 1
Super Mario RPG
Chrono Trigger
(aka Final Fantasy Chronicles)

farfel, how DARE you leave out both FF4 AND 8?!? I can see ignoring 8, cause that one is very hit or miss, but 4? :eek 2:
Like I said, there's two ways you can go about this -- start with the easy modern FF's (10 is a good place to start) or start at 1 and work your way forward in the order they were made. I've suggested both aproaches to friends in the past and they both work. :)
What do people think are the HARDEST games in the series? I'd say 5 gave me a few fits, and 7, 8, and 9 all had heard parts.

I play FF about 2 times a year, FF3/6 once a year, FFT once a year, and FF2/4 once every 2 years. You just can't beat those games. Well you can...but you know what I ment.... LOL
If I had to make a choice, its FF3/6 all the way. FF2/4 is a nice challenge. FF is just classic though, what I grew up on. FFT I think of as off in its own catagory though.
I wouldn't even consider CC, its...eh...a really annoying Gauntlet Legends. And FFT has an arcaic story line, horrible translating, but awsome mechanics.

I personally think the best starting point for anyone in the FF series or for RPG's in general is FF2/4. Especially on SNES, as it's the easytype version. Insanely fun gameplay, fantastic music, a broad range of creative and interesting characters, a beautiful world with amazing locations... and the coolest end boss in a game, ever.
Starting on FFVII might give you the wrong idea about the series. True, considered by most to be the pinnicale of the series (I spent well over 100 hours on it myself), but it also introduced a lot of pointless crap, and took the "level up before the end boss" idea to an insane extreme.
FF2(US) to me is the most pure, engaging, and entertaining RPG I've ever played. Having a solid state party was an absolutely awesome way to progress the story, especially with Kain. Oh man, Kain rules.
I highly urge you to start with this title, then check out 6 and 7, then move onto whichever ones you think look the coolest. FF2(US), to me, is the pinnacle of the series, 6 and 7 redefined the genre, and the rest were all good games, but they're leagues out of reach from 4/6/7.

The winner.
FF2(4j) is the best for the reasons HC pointed out, as well as the best story in the entire series. Hands down.
Play these: FF1, FF3j, FF2(4j), FF5, FF3(6j), FF9.
You may like FF7. I didn't, but it just didn't hook me. *shrug*
Skip all others. FF2 will make your brain bleed, FF8 .. don't get me started, and FFX/2 is just pure and utter shit.
Best bet, grab your SNES and get 4 and 6.

All in all the games are pretty good with the odd exception. I just bought the ps1 revamps since they were cheaper then the orignal 3 but today i picked up FF3 with a instruction manual for 45 bucks canadian the urge set in.Thank god my mom payed for half its great having her come along when I cruise the thrift stores.

Chrono Trigger and FF3 are the defintelty 2 of the top 5 RPGs on SNES. Chrono Cross was supposed to be bad from what i heard. But rthat was from people who played Trigger so maybe they set their standards too high.
Ugh, I don't know why everyone hates Chrono Cross. I loved the game, and for it to be one of what, 3, 4? titles to ever score a perfect 10 on Gamespot says a lot.
the ones I know of as 10s on GS are Super mario Bros. Dx,Ocarina of Time, SSMB and that

I think it was because it took such a diffenernt route in its battle system (as mentioned) and the story i guess was played through alot differently.
I though that chrono chross was a really fun game when I played it...more than 4 years ago.

The 2 best FF games are 5 and the real ff3. They're probably not best for beginners though because they're the most complex ones. 6 is probably the easiest one, so you should probably start there, though if you're not too afraiod of a challenge, you can start at the first one and work your way up.
Ok I have got a list down from what I am hearing so take a look.
These are not in order from play first and play last :)
Final Fantasy VIII PSX
Final Fantasy VII PSX
Final Fantasy VI PSX
Final Fantasy V PSX
Final Fantasy I NES
Final Fantasy II SNES
Final Fantasy III SNES
Final Fantasy X PS2
Final Fantasy X-2(maybe) PS2
Final Fantasy 1&2 GBA (TBR)

Listen, like I said, we can all give advice on which games are good or what not -- but don't listen to US! :D
Try each game with a open mind, realize that if you jump back to the NES/SNES ones they are VERY different, and enjoy them for what they are.
Final Fantasy games are like a fine and rare wine -- they are to be sipped and savored and made to last. 8-)
I never really owned or at least had a rpg in my house untill I burrowed chrono chross from a relative. I kinda never understood the basis of wtf was going on O_O
Since I was a total noob at the time I had no idea of how the battle system worked or the mgaic either.
Practicle was all it really needed to become a good rpg gamer. I think I should pick up the phantasy stars too?
Are the phantasy stars good? I realyl really really played pso alot .
