Well, I finally got my Genesis hooked up again a few months ago and gave Virtual Pinball a try. Man, talk about a great pinball game! I'll be spending a lot of time creating custom boards.
I also got Revenge Of The Gator for GB, which was developed by HAL Laboratory. That being said, it's almost as good as their other GB Pinball title, which of course is Kirby's Pinball Land.

Don't like most of the console pinball games but Necronomicon for the Saturn is pretty good.
The best non-console game imo is Epic Pinball.
Hopefully they'll release the source sometime, so someone can port it to Dreamcast,Xbox, GP32 and the like. :D

I've got another one to recommend: Hardcore Pinball for the GBA.
Last month, I got a new copy for around four bucks new. I've spent quite a bit of time with it, and I'm pretty impressed. The tables are designed very well and all four are fun to play. The cart even saves your settings and high scores!
However, Pinball Tycoon, also on the GBA, isn't as fun. The tables look like they came out of a lame freeware title, and they get boring pretty quickly. Not recommended.

Good old NES Pinball for me. It's basic but that's what makes it so good.

Iron Draggon recently made a good thread about GBA Pinball titles, and I thought I'd add a link to it:

Pinball for the Intellivision - I've always loved this one, with it's two screen set-up and great board design. Losing the ball never felt cheap, like the designers did it to drain your pocket of quarters like some authentic pinball machines I've played in my time.
Ruiner Pinball on the Atari Jaguar - two tables, interesting themes, and good layouts. Although it's so two-dimensional that it's occasionally easy to lose track of the ball.
Alien Crush on the TurboGrafx-16. It takes the pinball concept and does things that could only be done in a video game rather than on an electromechanical device like a real pinball table. Great creepy graphics too.
Honorable mention: Pinball Jam on the Atari Lynx. Another good game, marred by the ease of which you can lose track of the ball in the board graphics and also because I could never get a high score since my batteries would always die before too long. LOL

Saying 'console' knocks out Pinball Dreams/Fantasies for the Amiga (come on, XBLA release!) but it's not like I don't have plenty to choose from. I'm going to be boring and say Devil's Crush, but that isn't my first place- that would be Psycho Pinball on the Mega Drive.
For the love of god, IMPORT IT. You won't regret it. You even have the option to turn those annoying mini-games off if you dislike them. :)

Man, lots of great pinball games for me to find and play.
Has anyone got to play Alien Crush Returns on the Wii yet? I really like it, its like a wet video game dream to me. Since it has been so long since the original Alien Crush came out. Plus it has online enabled features. I recommend it if you liked its predessor.

How much does a typical pinball game cost to buy? And for that matter, how much do arcade games (the regular upright ones, not sit-down racing games or special things to stand on like Alpine Racer or a jetski game) go for? Because I recall back in the mid-90s, some of these machines would sell for upwards of $500-1,000.Ack! That's a difficult question to answer in a quick format. I don't wanna derail the thread, though. It depends on title and condition. For instance "Popeye" is considered to be one of the - if not the - worst pinball machines produced. As a result, you can pick these up still in the crate for $1400 or so. Games like Twilight Zone or Addam's Family (two of the best-selling pinball machines of all time) will fetch $3000 for "good" condition, and even higher for "excellent" condition. It is very much like cars. It all depends on the model and the condition.

As has been said, Alien Crush and Devil Crush, along with Dragon's Fury, are all great pinball games on consoles (Turbo Grafx and Genesis). I also really enjoyed Crue Ball, but probably more for the license. Hehe.

I now have a pretty big sub-collection of pinball video games - 45 as of this post, and there's a list of what I have here (http://www.freewebs.com/jkwh/pinballvglist.html) (the most recent acquisition was Dream Pinball 3D on the DS). I have a goal to hit 50 at some point. One of these days, when I have more room, I'm hoping to own an actual pinball table or two.
(The pinball collection is also the only reason stinkers such as KISS Pinball on the PS1 and Pinball Tycoon on the GBA are still in my collection.)
If someone asked me to pick one favorite for each system I own a pinball title for, here's what I'd go with:
2600: Video Pinball (Wasn't a tough decision as it's the only 2600 pinball game I own - I'm still looking for Midnight Magic)
NES: Pinball
Genesis: Virtual Pinball
SNES: Super Pinball: Behind the Mask
PlayStation: True Pinball
PS2: Flipnic: Ultimate Pinball
Game Boy: Kirby's Pinball Land
Game Gear: Sonic Spinball (the only GG title in the collection)
GBC: Pokemon Pinball
GBA: The Pinball of the Dead
DS: Metroid Prime Pinball
A few other titles I highly recommend hunting down:
-Crue Ball (Genesis)
-Power Rangers Zeo Full Tilt Battle Pinball (PS1)
-Pro Pinball series (PS1) - there's also a Pro Pinball compilation on the Dreamcast that wasn't released in the US. IIRC, all four tables from the PS1 games are included.
-3D Ultra Pinball: Thrillride (GBC)
-Little Mermaid II: Pinball Frenzy (GBC) - I kid you not. Uses the same engine as 3D Ultra Pinball and is just as fun.
-Hardcore Pinball (GBA)
-Muppet Pinball Mayhem (GBA) - Probably the best game ever published by NewKidCo.
-Dream Pinball 3D (DS)

Time for another bump. I recently acquired Pure Pinball on the Xbox and checked it out, and I have to say that it's worthy of a recommendation.
