What are the most important games that never got released? Like Earthbound Zero on Nes, or Starfox 2 on Snes?

Well, this is a system and a little off topic, but I always wanted the Nintendo 64 DD to hit the states. Which it was suppossed to. Now I have to pay like $500 to get one on ebay, which I will someday.
But I remember in NP always reading about it. It was originally coming to the US!

RE 1.5 is indeed interesting...knowing the popularity of all things RE these days, if they released whatever they had right this instant at a budget price it'd sell well. Not that they won't release it for other reasons (hopefully "continuity" not being one of them).

But yeah..."Earthbound: Zero" and StarFox 2 are some BIG ones.

I have two more to add:

"Dracula X: The Bloodletting" (post-1995, Sega 32x I believe)
System Shock 2 (Dreamcast)

The Bloodletting arguably just morphed into SotN, but System Shock 2 would have added a bit of demand for the Dreamcast. I'm not quite sure how the port would've panned out, but even if they didn't clean up much of the graphics the interface for PSI powers needed work and the game code apparently needed work as well. At the very least, the water texture... LOL

Tunnels and Trolls for the ColecoVision. Tempest for the Atari 5200. Klax for the Atari 7800.

At least, thanks to Opcode, Wizard of Wor will be a reality for the CV. And you know it'll be excellent, better than the CV version would've been back then.

I don't think it was that "important", but I really wanted to get Comanche for the Super NES. It had what would have been the most advanded version of the FX2 chip in it to move polygones. I saw a video of it running in a Toys 'R Us and it looked like ASS (very pixilated!) but I was facinated how they added extra chips to SNES carts to get them to do stuff you never expected (Like Doom of Dirt Trax FX)

FX Fighter for the SNES is another one... think the 32x version of Virtua Fighter except much, MUCH slower, simpler, and UGLIER (32x Virtua Fighter is actually pretty darned good.) I would have loved this one, too.

Speaking of Virtua Fighter... VF3 was supposedly finished for the Saturn, but Sega decided to released it for the Dreamcast instead since the Saturn was down the toilet in 1998. I understand it looked like a slightly better version of VF2.... nothing like the arcade game I'd image, though those shots of Saturn Shenume (another cancelled game) looked like they'd dug very deep into the Saturn's complex innards and found some more graphic power (in the sound chip of all places.)

Cheers :D

Dragon Hopper for Virtual Boy.

Seconded.

There are a few games I've looked through screenshots of that immediately "click" with me and I know I'll love them.

Rhapsody and Valkyrie Profile are two that come to mind. Sought out the games immediately after seeing them. I was just completely dejected after realizing I'll probably never get to play Dragon Hopper. It just looked so... different.

Final Fantasy V for the snes.

Socks the Cat.

I have a list of like 80 or so unreleased snes games on my site. Tons of them would have been good.

One I am still extremely curious about is a game called Final Fantasy Gaiden for the snes. As of now, the only information I have about it is that it exists.

I still have a promo 3DO of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, someone took a CD and made a calender out of it (1996)...I called Panasonic to check the release date of UMK3..because I was planning to buy a 3D0 (but got a Saturn instead lol) so they sent me a packet with some promotional goods...like a UMK3 baseball cap (which I lost sadly...has Panasonic logo on the back of it from what I remember) a few erasers with "Ice Breaker", a Pin of the RPG "Strahl" and "Ballz: Director's Cut"...and of course this odd little fake disc that was a calender.

I went to the company's website who had it under development and they had quite a few pictures of it as proof. Hmm...now where is it..

Here it is, it's "Chrono Resurrection"

You don't mean the unofficial 3D demo do you?

They were never making a game, just a demo disk of selected Chrono Trigger scenes in 3D.

Edit: And as RedEye pointed out. It was a fan thing.

Adventure Mr. Do! was planned as a laserdisc release by Universal in 1985. It never saw the light of day, which is why I took that as the inspiration for my new DP comic strip.

my biggest let down was that shining III scenario 2 and 3 never got its release in america, and also card fighters clash 2 never made it out in america.
i also wish bang bang busters would have been released for neogeo, that would have been a nice title to add to the collection.

Wasn't that just another one of the names they were considering for FF5 after 6 came out in America? Also...you're not saying there's a rumored prototype out there, are you?

One odd thing I remember is an issue of Game Players that reported on the 1993 CES. Games featured in some way at the Square booth included Romancing Saga and Final Fantasy: Earth Quest. I don't have them here, but I remember either that issue or the one right after it had a strategy guide for Mystic Quest, so it doesn't really make sense for it to be that. Then again, the entire article is filled with errors like their listing of "Bayou Force Ape" as an upcoming SNES title.

I was really looking forward to Hundred Swords on the dreamcast. (even had a pre-order on it at EB).

I also remember waiting for Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil Zero for the N64, but I had a feeling they would never get released since the system was pretty much on it's last legs at the time.
