View Full Version : finally getting a Gamecube - now what do I want? :D

So, a very poorly guarded surprise has leaked, and I believe I'll be getting a Gamecube soon, either for my Spetember birthday, or Chanukah, or maybe both. (reason doesn't really matter to me)

Now, the GC was part of last week's TRU bundle, and comes with Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. I assume I'll only really play them with my son.

What's the latest or best football game for the system? I believe ESPN 2k5 was only on XBox and PS2, right?

I definitely want to get:
Super Monkey Ball
Donkey Konga w/ the bongos
Maybe Defender or Spy Hunter
Wavebird controllers

I recall a lot of talk when Pikmin came out. I'll probably look into that, see if it's up my alley.

I'm certain there are other games I wanted for the GC, that I can't think of right now.

There's some good suggestions here:

But personally I'd tell you to pick up Eternal Darkness. It's a wild ride.

If you are RPG nut, Tales of Symphonia is where it's at. Get that game even if you aren't interested in RPGs. It's just that good.

I recommend Donky Konga....an addictive game for the whole family.

If you want (American) football Earl, then Madden 2005. Solid and professional. Just get a 1019 memory card, you'll need it!

I'm Steve, not Earl. Earl's the cool guy with the video-production skillset and a file-extension for a forum handle.

Thanks for the tip though. Yes, I was referring to American football. I liked NFL 2k1 on the Dreamcast enormously. Should I go with Madden on the Gamecube, or NFL2k3?

Updated rosters aren't terribly importnat to me, and I've never messed with 'draft' mode, or the management-type things. I always just played quick games with whatever the default lineups were.

All the Resident Evils are worth picking up. Also get Viewtiful Joe if you haven't played the PS2 version. And Soul Calibur 2 if you're into fighters.

Ooops :embarrassed:

Sorry Steve! What I get for running on very little sleep so far this week... have been getting a few people's names mixed up and failed to recognise someone at work whom (I was told) I used to sit fairly near for a year or so! That's my crappy brain...

Hey, Steve. Congrats on snaggin a new GameCube. I don't know your gaming tastes but here are my comments on a few games:

First off, you mention Defender and Spy Hunter. Warning! I was pretty disappointed in Spy Hunter and simply stopped playing it. I never tried Defender but it's really cheap (both are), and I never read 1 good thing about it. There are many better games than these.

Also, Finding Nemo is not a good game but if it's a pack-in, your son may like it. The graphics and sound are great, but (as you'll soon see) the load times on the GCN version are LONNNNNG. I can't believe how long, it is intolerable. We rented this game and got fed up with the lackluster gameplay and bad loads. Report back if you feel differently.

Football -- NFL2k3 is like $4.99 or $7.99 around here, and well worth it. My copy seems to get that !@#$ "disk cannot be read" like every 2 games for some reason, even though the disc appears to be fine. Not sure why. That's the only reason I don't play it much, the crashing. I'm sure Madden 2005 is a fun game too, it's full price right now though.

You mention Super Monkey Ball -- AWESOME! So is part 2.
Wavebirds -- AWESOME! My friend has 4 of 'em. We sit all over his big room playing wireless 4-player Mario Kart. I don't really care so never spent the $$ on buying them.

Okay, my favorite GCN games follow and I'll try to explain just why I like them, so judge as you will.

- Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader. This game is simply fantastic, if you are an original SW trilogy fan, then you must get it. It is on the difficult side but if you use a FAQ to find all the pick-ups (better shields, etc) , the levels will become easier. GREAT EXPERIENCE!

- Metroid Prime -- visually incredible and a lot of fun. A fun adventure game with plenty of challenges and sights to see. Great effects like water/reflections. Lots of variety and "moves" that you end up using -- 4 different beam weapons, the morph ball, bombs, etc, each which must be used in certain battles/scenarios.

- Burnout 1 and Burnout 2. I got Burnout 1 on the cheap. I played it for like 2 nights and was about to get rid of it, when all of a sudden I finally "got " what the game was all about! What fun (and some frustration) working my way thru the races, and it is freaky FAST! Burnout 2 is improved in every way over B1, but perhaps not as difficult. B2 has way more cars & races and also the ultra-cool crash mode, oh yeah also the Chase races (you are in a police car chasing a speeder, you must ram them like 10 times before end of level). These games are good as 1-player games, the split screen kinda sucks IMHO.

I also enjoyed Spider-Man, Hulk, and the newest Pitfall game. Only if you are fans of those characters / movies.

F-Zero GX is INSANE ! It is a bit too hard I think but totally blew me away with its speed, great music, and great levels. Viewtiful Joe is old-school platforming mentality but with razer-sharp new visuals and FX and attitude. And finally, Pikmin and Pikmin2 are recommended if you want a quieter puzzle-type game. And finally, Beyond Good and Evil, I enjoyed that quite a bit.

I don't post often so when I do I make the most of it! ;)

Wasn't paper mario an N64 game? Or have I been so out of touch lately that they've made a sequel for GC? Anyways, I don't know what you like, but I too own a GC, and here's what I highly recommend:

Ikaruga: A great arcade-style shooter, albeit a bit hard. Really challenges your brain's spacial orientation abilities.

TimeSplitters 2: If you are in to first person shooters, this is the stuff! A lot like goldeneye. Lots of unlockable stuff, and a pretty decent story mode. But the real fun comes in during multiplayer.

Metroid Prime: Metroid in 3D, what else must be said? Totally sweet graphics, immersive story, pro logic support makes it sound great too! You'll be hooked on this game for the 17 hours that it takes to beat it the first time through.

Sonic Heroes: A cool game, especially for long time Sonic fans such as myself; my only regret is that story mode is only 1 player. Also, there's not much replay value after you beat the game with every team.

Super Smash Bros. Melee: Loads of fun! A plethora of modes, tons of unlockable features, nifty trophy section. And it should be pretty cheap nowadays! SSBM is the reason why I bought a GC.

Soul Caliber II: The only other good fighter out there for GC, except for maybe SSBM, which is pretty much in a class of its own. Namco puts out nothing but exceptional quality fighting games, and SCII is a great example. Sweet graphics, fitting musical scores, and console-only weapon master mode are just a few of the reasons why I like SCII. Plus you get to play as Link!

And I actually enjoyed Defender, I don't care what everyone else says about it. I beat the game and unlocked every ship. It's pretty neat if you can handle the difficulty level at the end of the game. But I didn't really like Spy Hunter.

Super Mario Sunshine-While not a huge jump over Super Mario 64, it's still a lot of fun.

Super Smash Bros. Melee-Arguably the best fighter on the system.

Soul Calibur II-Nintendo scored the best exclusive character, by far, so this is the version to get.

Mario Kart Double Dash-Another winner in the Mario Kart series.

Resident Evil: Zero and Resident Evil (remake): While they have some of the RE series' inherent flaws, these games are purely awesome.

This is what I recommend:

Super Smash Bros. Melee-If you've played the N64 Super Smash Bros. and liked it, this one is 100 times better! A very addicting game that I guarantee will have you playing for a long, long time.

Metroid Prime-A great game that offers some of the best visuals you'll ever see in a Gamecube game. Even if you hate First Person Shooters, you'll love this one! All of the elements that made the other Metroid games great are in this one too.

Mario Kart Double Dash-Although not as good as the previous Mario Karts IMO, it's still an awesome game. Colorful graphics, a nice, wacky soundtrack, and the usual Mario Kart gameplay will keep you playing for a long time. Only problem with this one is it's control(steering).

Animal Crossing-Very addictive game. If you liked the Sims, this one's for you! You basically maintain your very own town full of all different kinds of villagers and you also get to customize your house with all different kinds of furniture, carpet, and wallpaper that you can buy from the store or get from your neighbors. And the best feature of all, NES games! Yep, you get to unlock a bunch of old NES games to play on your Gamecube!
