View Full Version : Jolly Jibbajaba's Secret Santa Contest IS OVER!!!

THE CONTEST HAS ENDED AND I HAVE MY WINNERS
Hi all.
I found out at the last minute that my Secret Santa recipient had to remove himself from the festivities. POG was unable to find me someone new to send the stuff to, so I have decided to give it all away via a contest, as I don't feel right recieving a Secret Santa gift without giving one, or in this case, three.
The contest is going to be very simple. I am going to post a number of screenshots from various games spanning a number of consoles. The first person to correctly identify them all wins. If no one can correctly identify them all, then whoever identifies the greatest number of them wins.
"But wait Jibba, you said there were three prizes!"
That's right. I have split up my Secret Santa gift into three chunks differing in monetary value, so that one is sort of a "grand prize". Whoever submits the correct answers first gets to pick from the three. The second winner picks from the remainiing two, and the third person gets the leftovers.
"So Jolly Jibbajaba, what are these prizes of which you speak?"
Third Prize: Sealed Resident Evil 4 Demo for Gamecube.
Second Prize:: Playstation 2 (mostly demo) pack: Disc-only copy of Wipeout XL, wierd little handheld steering wheel controller, Dragonball Z Budokai 3 trading card and manga, ESPN 2K5 soundtrack, Super Mario Bros./Heathcliff cartoon DVD sampler from a Cheerios box, and the following demos (all sealed): The Punisher, Mercenaries, ATV Offroad Fury 3, Fight Club, and a Konami Preview Disc (TMNT 2: Battlenexus, Silent Hill 4: The Room, Suidoken IV, Neo Contra, Ys: The Ark of Napishtim, and King Arthur).
Grand Prize: Toaster-style Nintendo Entertaiment System plus 13 games. Includes system, two controllers, zapper gun, AC adapter, and a set of AV cables (RF adapter not available, but assuming that your TV isn't older than you are, you can and should use AV cables instead of an RF adapter anyway.) The NES has an original 72-pin connector (not a shitty MCM replacement) which has been personally removed and restored to ziffiness by me. I played with this NES instead of mine over the weekend and I can attest to it's ziffosity. Also comes with the following games: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link, Tecmo Bowl, Dragon Warrior, Shadowgate, Silent Service, Gotcha!, Ikari Warriors, T&C Surf Design, Bandai Golf: Challenge Pebble Beach, Wall Street Kid, and Skate or Die.
I have one request as far as the grand prize goes. I bought or put together all of the NES stuff because the person to whom it was supposed to go didn't have one. I would still like to see it go to someone who has been looking for a NES and doesn't have one. I guess what I am saying is that I want it to go to a good home. Please don't win it just to turn around and sell the lot on eBay. I could have done that and probably made a decent chunk of scratch at this time of year, but I am trying to keep with the spirit of Christmas. All I ask is that you do the same. If you win the contest but already have a NES and/or all those games, please consider choosing one of the other prizes. This is by no means a rule, only a humble request. Thanks.
The Rules: The contest will start tommorow, Tuesday December 14, at 6 PM PST. It will run until Friday, December 17 at 6 PM, or until 3 people have submitted correct answers. DO NOT POST ANSWERS HERE!!! Answers are to be e-mailed to me at cpalaimo@ucdavis.edu. Answers will not be accepted via PM, as my inbox may fill too quickly.
Good luck, and hopefully a few people choose to participate.
Merry Christmas,
Chris Alaimo

I have finished preparing the contest, and it will be posted here right at 6pm PST. That's 9 for you east coasters. Sorry it will be sort of early in the morning for Cauterize, Hydr0x, and NES-a-holic, but hopefully a few of the screenshots are tough enough that the winning answers won't be submitted within the first few minutes.
Good luck everyone, and let me just say that this is already a lot of fun for me. I'm going to do more of these in the future.

I apologise that you took the comment personally. I didnt even have you in my mind there, with regards to blame, Tim. people are just too damn smart around here. Notice how most contests ended quite quickly? yes. By the time I SAW each contest it was already over. It was more of a wrong place/wrong time kind of a deal. NOW i will "shut it".

A: The contest will be in here...IN TWENTY MINUTES!!!!!
B: I may be able to get more of the RE:4 demos, and if so, I will give them out as 4th prize, 5th prize, and so on.
C: Without giving too much away, I will say this. Considering that I am giving away a NES as the grand prize, it wouldn't make much sense to have a lot of NES screenshots, would it?

Okay kids, the rules are simple. These screenshots come from games from several different consoles. Identify all 20 screenshots and send your ordered list to cpalaimo@ucdavis.edu, with "Contest" in the subject line. Again, the first person to correctly guess all 20 will get his or her pick of the three prizes. You do NOT need to indicate what system the game appears on. Only one entry per person will be accepted. In your e-mail, please include your real name and DP screen name at the top of the message, with your answers below.
If you don't know all 20, you should definitely submit as many as you can, but wait until the two clues are posted on Thursday and Friday. If no one gets all 20 then the top three scores will win. Be sure to type out the compelte title of the game, being mindful that the game may be a sequel. If 3 correct answers have not been submitted by 6PM PST Wednesday, then I will post a clue. I will also do this on Thursday if neccesary. If I still don't have 3 winners on Friday, then I will start eliminating the most difficult screenshots one per day.
If you have any questions or comments then please post them here in the thread. Good luck to everyone and I look forward to sending this stuff to the winners.

I just thought about the rules and some stuff contradicts other stuff. The contest will end on Friday at 6PM PST. I will NOT start eliminating screenshots after that in the hope of a clear winner. The three entries with the highest number of correct answers submitted by Friday night will win.
Thanks.

No. I will not indicate that there are any winners until I have three, at which point I will announce that the contest has ended. Too much temptation for cheating if I announce a winner while the contest is still ongoing.

@SoulBlazer
mhh, i didn't have a clue first which system they are for with pic 4 and 15, all others are quite obvious imho (at least the generation)
the toughest games for me were 4, 10, 15 and 19. i can imagine 3 and 20 can be pretty tough if you don't have a clue what they are (i did know both just from the screen)
all others have clues in the screenshot that should help you find out what game it is (if you guess the system right that is), easy to find out with in-screen info are 1,6,11,12,13,14,15 (not to easy, but possible),16,17. all those have direct clues in the picture :)
screen 9 has an very easy to recognize element and 5 and 7 are very famous
@jibba
i hope this is not against the rules, imho this doesn't really give away anything, it's just a guideline how to find the names. if you don't agree with me and want the guideline removed, just let me know or let a moderator edit my post if i'm not here, i'm ok with that

yeah, 10 is fuckin hard if you're not into that era, i had to scan a whole screenshot gallery for that system to find the game
i did know 20 but i guess if you don't know it it's equally hard, although you should know the system and there are less than 1000 games for the system to scan through :p

Agghh!!! It's over?!?!?!?!?
I just spent 5 hours working on finding the answers and when I went to refresh the page it said it was over I only got 10 of them though. The oldest game system I have owned is a Genesis and I've only played probably 30 games for that system. The rest of the systems I have owned are N64 and up. I know absolutely nothing about anything before the Genesis, but I think I did fairly well when you consider that. Third free chance to finally get a NES gone down the drain. I'm patient though, I'll wait for the next opportunity and try that.
I'm so tired and feel like I'm going to pass out now.

OK folks, as I said, the contest is over. I want to thank the 8 people who submitted their answers. I have decided to add a "Fourth Place", the fourth prize being a second sealed copy of the RE:4 demo. It was going to be my copy, but I still haven't bought a Gamecube anyway.
I am very pleased with the winners, as my contest was inspired by one of theirs so it is fitting that he won mine. Without any further ado, here are the four winners:
Fourth Place: Oobgarm
Third Place: hydr0x
Second place: My good friend Krazy Kamino
GRAND PRIZE: Keir to the nth Power!!!
Please PM me with your prize preferences. All four of you should PM me with a list of the prizes in your order of preference.
These were the only four individuals to successfully identify all 20 screenshots (which is why I added a fourth place. Didn't want Oobgarm to be the only person to get them all without winning anything.)
A big honorable mention goes to Cryomancer, who got a 19.5 by barely missing number 13. Max 330 Mega also deserves props for submitting 18 correct answers.
I can't tell you guys how much fun this was to do. I am defintely going to start putting on this type of contest on a regular basis as a means of distributing my extra gaming stuff. Look for another contest in the near future.
Now for the part that you've all been waiting for, the answers.

13) Pitfall II: Lost Caverns (Atari 2600 / VCS): A lot of people misidentified this as Pitfall!, but any Pitfall! fanatic will tell you that the original game didn't have a sky in it.
not only that, there's also the colors next to "Activision", the different character artwork, the missing time limit...

16) Streets of Rage 3 (Genesis): I was surprised that this screenshot didn't fool anyone. No one guessed SOR 1 or 2.
part 1 and 2 have a different sprite for Axel and the whole lifemeter and score part looks different

20) Time Trax (SNES): This was a toughie. I used to LOVE this show.
well, knowing almost any western SNES game did help me with this one, i knew it just from the screen, saved me some work ;)

See, that explains why I did'nt get 4 and 8. I've never played either of them. :) I did'nt have a Genesis as a kid, being a SNES fanboy, and while I've played many Genesis games through emulation, I've never tried the Buck Rogers or Gunstar Heros games yet. I'm working on it..... ;)
Yeah, I used to watch Time Trax also, and that's how I found that one online. Never played the Tetris Disney GBC game but that was easy to find. The other 16 games I've played at least. :D
Congrats to the winners!

OK the prize situation has been worked out. Keir has elected to take the PS2 package, and Kaminofahinopino has chosen the NES. Therefore, by default, hydr0x and Oobgarm will get RE:4 demo discs. PM me your addresses, fellas!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!
This.Is.GREAT!!!!
First, i'd like to thank Keir to the Nth power, who kindly took the ps2 package thus allowing me to take the NES package. Hats off to you, good sir.
Secondly, i'd like to thank Jibbajaba, for putting this contest on. It was a hell of a great contest. I was seriously worked up all damn night at work from when i left home at 4:30 until i got home at 10:00 wondering if i had won.
Truly freaking awesome contest, man. I already sent in my address, Jibba....do let me know when it ships out!!!! I'm a bit more than pumped to try out gotcha.
I could ramble on for a bit, but my mind is going a million fricking miles an hour. So i'm gonna go now, before i take any stupid victory dance pictures with my camera. LOL

Great contest man! Even those of us who are fairly Google-savvy got stumped! Here was my final list:
1. A Boy and his Blob
2. Wonderboy
3. Blackthorne
4. ??
5. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
6. E.T.
7. ?? RPG
8. ??
9. Life Force
10. Lock 'n Chase
11. Magical Tetris
12. Megaman Soccer
13. Pitfall II
14. Sonic 2
15. Starflight
16. Streets of Rage 3
17. Super Mario Land
18. Super Punch Out
19.Texas Chainsaw Massacre
20. ??
I knew it was Pitfall II because of the BAT! I never played a lot of Sonic but by comparing screen shots I found Sonic 2 was the only one which had the score in italics.
One minor "cheat" I found ... The SNES has a resolution of 256x223, so it was easy to tell which games were SNES. Still didn't help me win though. :)
Congrats to the winners, you guys are some serious game sleuths!

PS: Can you post what the hints were going to be?

PS: Can you post what the hints were going to be?
The first hint was that the games are in alphabetical order, which some people noticed right away but others seemingly never noticed.
The second hint was going to be me listing the number of games that were from each system. That would certainly narrow things down somewhat.
I took the screenshot myself, rather then downloading them from the web. I don't know if some of you were looking for those actual screenshots on the net or not.
I'm making the New Years contest harder. It is going to be a Genesis-only screenshot contest, with Genesis games as the prizes.

Yeah, I compared resolutions of ones I knew to figure out what most the systems were on ones I wasn't sure on. Others I popped on the roms, google imge searched, used the DP online guide, videogamemuseum screens, and finally, asking in an IRC channel, heh. Damned pitfall II. *shakes fist ala brak's dad*

haha didn't even notice the alphabetical order, would have helped me A LITTLE LOL
here's what i did use:
DP Screenshot Gallery (did get me Lock n Chase)
Emulators
www.vgmuseum.com
DP Rarity Guide (to find out which versions of pitfall exist mainly :D )
some HUGE 2600 review site
i actually asked someone else for 2 pictures, only knew one though
Google Search
a short summary on how i found the games:
1,2,3,5,6,7,8,12,13,14,16,17,18,20 i knew from the screenshot (some needed a detailed check though to find out which part of the series)
2: check which version it is with vgmuseum.com
4: was the last one i got, by asking someone, no chance to find out this one otherwise, there are NO clues in the picture and i wasn't sure about the system as graphics were too good for NES but seemed to bad for MD/SNES. i searched google for "flavius" compared with vg words and also "yellow triangle" in the hope someone incl. this info in a faq
5: version check with vgmuseum.com
9: well, first thing NES, 2nd thought: mhh could be Salamander, but i was missing the weapon cycle bar first, noticed it's there later and checked vgmuseum.com screens, gotcha
10: found it by chance on an atari 2600 site, was searching for Chainsaw Massacre actually
11: well, rarity guide this time, tetris + gbc
13: knew it was pitfall, a lot of comparison between part 1 and 2 screens showed me that it must be 2, from the sprite i knew it must be the 2600 version, considering i'm not an 2600 player at all this was a tough one
14: well, my guess was part 2 although i've never played too much sonic, then i saw that part 2 is the only one with italic score/time letters and i knew i was right
15: very tough one, actually found it by googling for "Orbit Established" in the hope i was in some faq, found a dutch forum thread where someone had asked what game he remembered by using this expression, voila, done
16: was unsure which episode of SoR, checked screens and emulator, MUST be part 3
19: another tough one for me, found it in the DP 2600 Screenshot Gallery iirc
