View Full Version : Is there an actual *rare* Xbox game?

I look at a system like the GameCube, which in a way came out around the same time as the Xbox, has the same graphics and such, but it manages to have a handful of rare titles. Games like Cubivore, Bust a Move 3000, NCAA College Basketball 2K3, Gauntlet Dark Legacy all pull in a pretty nice amount of money on eBay and are extremely hard to come by, but I look at a system like Xbox where I can't put my finger one even one title that can hold the same.
Is there a single Xbox game that is even worth any sort of money then it should be worth? I'm guessing some Capcom fighting games are one of the few if any, but as of now I can't think of one.

I don't know how rare it is but the Xbox Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 sells for a bit on Ebay (I sold a sealed copy there a couple months ago for $70). I know House Of The Dead III used to be rare before it was re-released and Fatal Frame is pretty hard to come by too. Battle Engine Aquila is an impossible one to find.
I think the SNK games like SVC Chaos and Metal Slug 3 may be future Xbox rarities because I ever see them in stores.

Yeah I figured as much, the Dreamcast Capcom fighters were always considered rare, and it would only be a matter of time before the Xbox versions did as well.
Either way I'm glad I picked up Metal Slug 3 when I did.

Personally, I'd keep my eyes on both Phantom Crash and Deathrow. Both had relatively small print runs and were largely shunned not only by the major gaming media, but also by gamers in general. It's a huge plus that both are fantastic games.

There was one game for the Xbox, damnit I can't remember the name but Joe stuck it in that Collectors Closet column of his. Something about it being recalled due to it had part of a religous prayer in the background music and it pissed some people off, I beleave it was re-released just minus the BGM part.
Your gonna have to get Joe or someone else with that issue to give out the title, sorry

Sneakers is pretty hard to come by. Any exclusive titles seem to be difficult to get. I haven't seen one at TRU in a long while now. Of course you can still find them on ebay, but there are usually only a handfull up at a time.

It's weird how Marvel Vs Capcom II seemed to suddenly become rare!
I suppose you could also include Steel Battalion and Line Of Contact in this, as they were released in limited numbers, and were hardly ever seen in shops at any point.
Also, don't forget that the GameCube also has Phantasy Star I & II which is quite hard to get hold of too... Mainly because only people with the BB adapter really play it...
The current gen systems are starting to show their rare and hard to find games now though. If I were asked about what I would consider rare or hard to find on the Xbox for the UK region - I would be inclined to say:
Steel Battalion & Line Of Contact
Crazy Taxi III
House Of The Dead III
ToeJam & Earl III
Marvel Vs Capcom II
Rugby Super League
Shenmue II
Dino Crisis III
Although some don't make high money, I would say they were hard to find more than anything...

What's wrong with that? Why shouldn't I be permitted to play a game that would be perfectly acceptable to play if I lived in Japan? I'd like to think that this is a matter of Capcom wanting to provide North American audiences with a version of Street Fighter that features English text instead of Japanese characters (not to mention the name mix-up between the likes of M. Bison, Vega, Balrog, etc).

And are they pre-owned? Quite likely. If they were brand new, they would still be sealed up in their brown packing cases...
Now there's a future rarity - Steel Battalion still inside their brown delivery box's - Surely a factor for collector's?

according to M$ it's upto each publisher whether they want to press with region coding or not... some do not bother while majority of them do encode...
With the component and HDTV I think it's really silly idea to region code anyway...
sure users with old TV via RF or composite might have an issue but they can put the warning on the case...
I wish M$ kept his word and made Xbox region free...
oh wel...
I'd have to agree with Dr. Justin on this one. After doing a little research on Deathrow it looks like it will be one to collect. I've noticed that IGN has an article on their website that says "No sequeal for Deathrow" They say there never will be another one..I also noticed that for whatever reason the review for the game @ IGN is no longer visible (it got a 9.3 btw). After reading all this I decided to buy one....checked half.com...and got a sealed one for $18. :D

I believe it was due to a sound glitch in Hugo's stage with the DC soundtrack option. Caused a pretty awful noise to shriek at you.

I would say that that of the games that have been named:
Ultra Bust A Move seems to be everywhere in Milwaukee. Toys R Us (where I bought my copy), EB, GameStop, Best Buy and Circiut City all carry it.
Pinball Hall of Fame was impossible to get your hands on for a while, but has since seemed to have become widely available too. I saw at least 25 copies at Best Buy last I went.
Metal Slug 3 is insanely easy to get around here. Everyone still has the game still new and most also have it used. I could probably snag 15 copies of it in a day if I wanted to at about $25.00 apiece.
HOTD 3 is rarer, but I was happy to get a new copy recently for $20.00.
The games that I think will end up being truly rare:
- Intellivision Lives! The Xbox version seems to have not been printed in half the numbers of the PS2 and GameCube counterpart. I just got one new yesterday for $14.99, but it took me forever to find it, and it was the last copy they had.
- The Guy Game - The recall has removed it from the shelves, and it sells extremely quickly and for a lot of money on eBay.
- Yourself Fitness - The problem with this game is that they priced it too high. If the game comes down in price to $20.00, I think a lot more people would purchase it (I would.) For $35.00 though, it is tough to justify.

Metal Slug 3 is everywhere here in Metro Detroit. Every store I walk into has it, new or used. Somebody else mentioned GunValkyrie. No way there. It is extremely common. You can pick it used for under $10 at Gamestop or EB, and they have plenty of them.
My Top 10 nominations would be:
Sneakers
Freestyle Street Soccer
Fatal Frame (very hard to find, even when it came out)
Curse: The Eye of Isis
Blackstone: Magic & Steel
Barbie Horse Adventures
Antz Extreme Racing
Arctic Thunder (early release)
Maximum Chase (early release)
Arx Fatalis
I have yet to see Castle Shikagami 2 in any stores near me. I thought this was released already. I almost never see Syberia II (I could be wrong here, but I hardly see it. Only Syberia).

My Blockbuster store has several copies of Freestlye Street Soccer complete for $4.99 for both Xbox and GameCube. That's the national price for corporate stores, so any non-franchise store should have it for that price (unless they sell out). I was waiting to see if it got butchered like some of the other shooters that got brought over here Mobile Light F@#$% *Cough* (not that I would touch the PS/PS2 versions of those games anyway).

Sadly, we live in an age where stores backstock seems to disappear before some people notice games were released. Other than TJandE 3, none of those games seem to have been limited much in quantity (they were all easy for me to locate at some point in time). I am pretty sure that not every single copy of Silent Hill 2 I saw at launch sold through, where are they?
And shouldn't at least Panzer Dragoon and JSRF be Platinum? (I know some of the list above are on the Plat/Budget re-release line in Japan but I can't remember which ones)
I wasn't surprised when all the SegaCD/32X stuff at Funcolands disappeared into nothingness (though it ticked me off quite a bit,) but when did currently supported systems games start getting chucked into the black hole?
Furthermore, why are there so many stores that don't even seem to carry a significant portion of new releases (and I'm talking big national chains now,) but stocked stupidly high amounts of stuff like that last Turok game not long ago? It took them forever to purge the shelves of the countless copies of that one (around her at least). I think malls use games more than a month old as heating fuel or something, along with all of the non-display copies of games.

All of the above aren't crazy rare excpet MvC2, CvS2EO, if you don't mind used copies, the rest are easy to find.
Update, Dai Senryaku VII is already rare, only a few days after release, EB and GS are all out of it, one GS in my area says restock is ont he way, but I'm not holding my breath, probably just 1-2 copies and they'll sell quickly.
Maximun Chase is common, my local TRU has it for $6 and no one wants it, IMO, Motor Trend: Lotus Challange is a lot rarer.

OK, another update, looks like Spikeout will be a rare title, although my local EB got 4 copies, some EBs don't get any at all, keep in mind that it says EB exclusive INITIALLY, amazon.com is offerin presell for shipment of April 15th from Target, so who knows, maybe there'll be more than 3600 copies.

I'm just wondering how the scene has changed. It seems that many games that were once difficult to find are now pretty common. People have been taking advantage of trade-in enticements offered by GS/EB over the past month or two, and the stock has been piling up. Here's my take (excluding Ebay):
Rare:
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Frogger Beyond
MLS Extratime 2002
Sneakers
Outlaw Golf: Holiday Golf
Futurama
Uncommon:
Fatal Frame
Metal Slug 3
Toejam & Earl 3
Crimson Sea
Spikeout
Common but once considered, or predicted to be, rare:
Otogi 1 & 2
Curse: Eye of Isis
Capcom vs SNK 2
The Guy Game
Dai Senryaku VII
House of the Dead III
Ultra Bust-a-Move
Air Force Delta Storm (but still way too expensive)
Arx Fatalis
Kakuto Chojin
Questionable (what's your take?):
Barbie's Horse Adventure
Red Card Soccer
EA Rugby
EA Cricket
Dragon's Lair 3D
Bloody Roar
Blackstone: Magic and Steel
Sega Soccer Slam
Ultimate Beach Soccer
Battlestar Galactica
Wings of War
Phantom Crash
Aquaman
Of course, if you factor in Ebay, then no Xbox title is rare. There are a few that may be pricey, but nothing difficult to acquire. The only game I mentioned that didn't have at least one listing everytime I looked was MLS Extratime 2002.

if you guys have an FYE at the mall near you, they carry a LOT of OOP/hard to find/non-greatest hits packaged titles for current consoles. i'm assuming they just sit and collect dust there because no one thinks of stopping in there to buy games...
every one i've been in has at least 1 JSRF, PDO, metal slug 3, etc. for sale.
dunno what gives, but there you go... :D
I found Castle Shikagami at a local outlet mall music store near me about 4 months ago. My copy was on PS2, and I have yet to see it on anything else. I bought it and I have never seen another since.
Back before CC had their $4.99 promotion I had seen one copy of Crimson Sea for 49.99, and I didn't buy it. Then came their promotion and I'd read on here that it would be included. I went back and needless to say it was gone. I looked everywhere I could think of for it new and used until I finally found it sealed for $20. Now it's common as hell at EB and local shops.
I'd better go buy the only copy of Dai Senryaku VII that I've seen around here tomorrow morning, if it's still there.
