Check this out. I found out about this guy that does special mods for XBOX's. I'm not talking about mod chips and hard drives and stuff like that. He does that too, but I'm actually talking about custom paint jobs, and special led lights and all kinds of stuff like that.
He basically can take an ordinary XBOX and totally trick it out. It's like "Pimp my Ride" on MTV, except it's "Pimp your XBOX".
So anyways, I find out about this guy, and from everything I can see and from other people I talk to, the guy appears to be totally legit, and very trustworthy, and that the guy does really high quality work, etc, etc.
So anyways, I send him my XBOX, for him to "pimp it out", with a custom Silver and Blue paintjob with all kinds of lighting effects and stuff. Hard to explain without a pic of it.
I send this guy my XBOX, and I also send him $140 via PayPal. The $140 is the cost of the custom paint job, all the lighting effects, the custom XBOX jewel, and the return shipping cost. I know that sounds like alot of money, but when my XBOX got back to me, it would be totally tricked out and just look absolutely sweet.
So anyways, I send this guy my XBOX and the $140, and it was only about 6 days before XMAS, and I know that it would take him some time to do this stuff, but it turns out that dude has been totally missing from this website and forum that he always would visit. Other people have complaints against him, and this one guy sent him like $400, to get a totally tricked out to the fullest extent XBOX, and he hasn't gotten anything, and can't get ahold of the guy.
Right now it appears that my precious XBOX is never coming back to me, and that I'm going to have to try to get ahold of PayPal and try to get some of my funds back from this guy.
There is also the slight chance that this guy had a family emergency, and that he just had to put all of his work on hold, and that he will soon get in contact with everybody and let them know that their stuff would eventually get to them real soon.
But unfortunately, I think I've been hoodwinked.
The thing that sucks is that everybody on this website was raving about his work, and the quality of his work and how solid and reputable the guy is. Then he totally freaking dissapears out of the blue. Everybody there thinks that the guy must have had a death in his family or something. They don't believe that he could be a ripper.

There isn't any question that I took a huge leap of faith in sending my XBOX, my precious freaking XBOX to somebody that I really didn't know.
Normally, I would never have done such a thing, but the guy had been doing these kinds of mods for people for several years. He was always considered to be 100 percent legit.
People raved about him.
So I took a huge leap of faith and sent it to him.
Man, that was a freaking painfull lesson.
That XBOX that I had was a totally tricked out XBOX. Not on the outside, but the inside. I had a 120 gig hard drive in there, with every emulator known to mankind running on that thing.
I just wanted to take my love affair one step further and totally do up the exterior of it.
What a dumbass to send off a XBOX like that and risk it never coming back. Man, it just makes me so pissed off to even think about it.

You won't call the cops? People like you are what scam artists hope for. People who won't do anything when it happens. Get his contact info from paypal, and get ahold of the police. File a fraud complaint, with the usps, fbi, and if he was doing mods, call microsoft, and tell them. It may not get your stuff back, but if he gets caught, it will at least ease your mind. And if he does get caught there is this little thing called restitution:)

Just like a UFO! Honest officer! It was here! Really! I know you can't see it now, but honest, it was here.
In my experience, honest people who can do mods (like me) won't do custom stuff. Too time consuming to really be worth the effort. I get asked, but the most I'll ever do is add an LED or two to shoot out the side. Anything else is too much work to be profitable.
Unless you scam people out of their modded Boxes. I suppose that's profitable.

As a whole load times on Xbox are pretty impressive as is. By the time the average Xbox is so beat up from simply playing games that it fails you will be able to buy one for really cheap. I am willing to bet that a majority of people that have HD's in their Xbox systems didn't get one just to rip a certain amount of their library into it.

majority, perhaps, but you'd be surprised at the number of parents that love it. take for example a kid whose parents are divorced. mom and dad only have to buy one copy of each game and the kid can copy them to the hard drive of one of his xboxes. no lugging xboxes or games around. grab a memory card and he can pick up where he left off.
surprisingly, a lot of parents bought xboxes for their pre-teen kids and kids aroung 8 years old. these are kids who are more likely to scratch cd's. if you only have to touch the discs once to load them on the hard drive, they're less likely to get damaged.
and from a collector's stand point, this is the greatest thing ever. you can play all the games in your collection without worrying about damaging a mint copy.
trust me, there are more legit users of modded xboxes than you'd think.

if you get the xtender for the xbox, you can have up to three hard drives, a potential of 600gb...you can fit roughly 40 games on a 200gb hard drive

To an extent you could, but there are also led's which need to be soldiered in place. Also the jewel mods are done the majority of the time using led's also. There is also a certaing amount of cutting the case involved to install a new jewel, if you plan on having it lit from under. I do know what Anthony1 is referring to...If you dont feel comfortable doing it yourself... I can understand why he sent it out.

You make it sound as if a major amount of gamers that mod their systems do it to preserve hardware and software. That's shit and you know it.
I am also willing to bet that most people who mod their systems in any way think to themselves "hey I want to reduce wear and tear on my system. I need my loadtimes cut from 5 seconds to 2." Sense the sarcasm.

I modded my Xbox for my 7 and 8 year old boys. I got sick and tired of hearing about how their games wouldn't load because they had scratched them. With them on the hard-drive that is not a concern now.

I still don't see a reason for Anthony1 to rip his entire library into his harddrive. Xbox systems and software are not flimsly. He isn't a child so the risk of scratches are low.
Xbox systems were made to play games. Xbox parts were made to move. Big deal, you extend the life of your console. How much will an Xbox be worth in 10 years? I am willing to bet very low.
As for my "other stuff, perceived percentages, and peoples motives," I never claimed them to be fact genius. Piracey is a problem throughout the world. That is fact. Modchips and harddrives are tools used by pirates. You're naive to think that a majority of people that modify hardware are doing things strictly by the book. I think it's time to check your own reality.

This whole topic is a minefield and I really don't think people are being kind to Anthony. He had a major problem and next time somebody says they've been ripped off I daresay he has every right to walk up to them and do his best "HA-HA!" Nelson-style :)
I still don't see a reason for Anthony1 to rip his entire library into his harddrive. Xbox systems and software are not flimsly. He isn't a child so the risk of scratches are low.
Tell that to Abdul, who recently lost a whole disc to a freak accident..!
There's a number of problems with that block of text, but I'll go through them one by one...
As play time with discs increases, the probability of the discs getting scratched approaches one. Do you agree with that? Good, because it's essentially true. Now, even a very careful person will put wear and tear on their discs during normal use. Perhaps it's not appreciable during the time period a console is current gen, but it still is wear. I have seen so many shitty looking PlayStation discs to even be able to respect this assertion on your part.
Next, if somebody walked up to me and said "hey, I can magically make your XBox play games without your needing to put the disc into the machine," I would definitely be scared but were it possible it probably wouldn't be a bad idea. If there was a version of the XBox that only needed to read the discs once, and one that always needed to read that discs, wouldn't you rather save yourself the hassle? Leave the piracy issue out of it for the moment - that's just a "we agree but that's not relevant" issue.
Finally, saying the XBox isn't flimsy is sort of like saying an old Buick isn't flimsy - it sure ain't but that doesn't matter when the damn engine has dropped straight out of the thing! XBoxes are notorious for being loud and the DVD drives (as you know, Thompsons especially) and could certainly use being modded.
As for everything else - your assertion seems to be that nobody uses modification to the XBox for anything besides deviant or illegal purposes, and there's no justification for that. None at all. That's an all or nothing statement and I find it amusing you try to thrust that in Omnedon's face. That's the equivalent of running up to an elephant and yelling "YOU DO NOT EXIST!" at him, except in this case there isn't any elephant, but rather a person who can feel somewhat insulted by this sort of thing.
Anyhow, that's my $.02 and I'm done with it.
I could certainly say the same for your "block of text" Ed. Let's start
I have seen so many shitty looking PlayStation discs to even be able to respect this assertion on your part.
Your own personal experience does not rule them all.
Does such a thing exist? Until it does I think I will be able to deal with the hassle of putting a disc into my xbox.
If so many Xbox systems are shit then why don't we sue microsoft? There was a class action lawsuit against Sony. Now I don't have experience with this personally, but i've heard as a result of the lawsuit you can send your PS2 back to Sony and they will replace the disc drive if it is broken even years after a warranty has expired. One could assume that only a minor amount of Xbox systems have had trouble. If Xbox system were as flawed as you made them out to be wouldn't similiar action be a no brainer?
As for everything else - your assertion seems to be that nobody uses modification to the XBox for anything besides deviant or illegal purposes, and there's no justification for that. None at all.
Wrong, read the thread Ed. I never said 100% of the people that mod their systems are doing so with ill intent. There are a noticable amount of people that do though. Get real Ed.
That's an all or nothing statement and I find it amusing you try to thrust that in Omnedon's face.
That's an all or nothing statement that you made. Not me.
You may want to keep that 2 cents to save up for a valid opinion. I like you Ed but you seem to like to try and 1up me. Try and not succeed. In the interest of trying to save the thread, anyone else who has a problem with me please shoot me a PM.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnd you made sure you checked his refs/previous deals on xbox-scene???

Great point. Let's not fool ourselves. A very small minority is into the modding scene. And a majority of that minority are probably doing something illegal.
I bet RCM thinks steak knives oughta be illegal too.

Modding your xbox is easy, all you needed was some of that krylon fusion paint and a few tuts.
I hope you can get that bitch back from PayPal or the police. If you need help with any modding activities PM me.
Hope you get your baby back :)

I have seen so many shitty looking PlayStation discs to even be able to respect this assertion on your part.
Your own personal experience does not rule them all.
You convienently left your quote out of this which states that XBox hardware and media is not flimsy. Right, but neither will it last forever. Hard drives don't have a perfect lifespan either, but loading a game onto a HD
If there was a version of the XBox that only needed to read the discs once, and one that always needed to read that discs, wouldn't you rather save yourself the hassle?
Does such a thing exist? Until it does I think I will be able to deal with the hassle of putting a disc into my xbox.
And when you're able to do what many folks have - put the games onto the hard drive, Phantom-style, you will gladly adopt that method, then. Hoped it was obvious this was a theoretical question and I'm trying to get at the ridiculousness of saying there's no merit to ripping games to a hard drive which is much faster - and less costly, over the long run, in terms of DVD drive replacements, XBox downtime (once you get over that initial modding) and games.
If so many Xbox systems are shit then why don't we sue microsoft? There was a class action lawsuit against Sony.
This simply isn't relevant. The idea is to make your first XBox your only XBox - I definitely can understand if people don't want to mess around with buying old XBoxes off eBay that may or may not be flaky.
As for everything else - your assertion seems to be that nobody uses modification to the XBox for anything besides deviant or illegal purposes, and there's no justification for that. None at all.
Wrong, read the thread Ed. I never said 100% of the people that mod their systems are doing so with ill intent.
So why bring it up in the first place? Looks like you're trolling.
That's an all or nothing statement and I find it amusing you try to thrust that in Omnedon's face.

Fair enough. However, you're still definitely in Omnedon's face about nothing at all.

he speaks the truth on that, actually. look at the (active) members on xbox-scene, then look at the numbers of xbox's sold worldwide... i guarantee you the xs member list is less than half of the number of people who own xboxes.
my whole point was that while the majority of this small percentage use modding illegally, there still is a very large number of people (more than one would suspect) that uses modding legally, or with no ill intent.
in other words, (and these numbers are all to prove a point and are in no way factual) if 35% of xbox owners mod their systems, then you might think that 80% of that 35% uses it illegally, while truthfully, it might be more like 60% use it illegally. which means the majority still uses it illegally, but more people than you'd think use it with no ill intent.
i say we give everyone one last response to this issue, then turn the thread back to what it was about.

It simply is relevant. The whole point is that if so many Xbox systems were as chronically fucked as you make them out to be then we should do something about it. It worked against Sony and if you're right it will work against MS too. Why hasn't a similiar lawsuit been brought up against MS? Just speculation here, maybe there's no need?

I sure hope Anthony hears from that case modder guy so he can play his Xbox again, without having to get another upgraded for superior reliability, in addition to many other legal functions, all mentioned by me to refute this factually wrong assertion you made:

It would be fine if he ripped his own games. No reason for that though.

That wasn't in your first post. Secondly, some people really do care about getting little scratches on their discs. Let me get this right - are you against people ripping their own discs or not? This seems a little inconsistent to me. On one hand you say ripping games one own is fine, but on the other we're supposed to just stick with loading games? Which is it?

You're being very selective as to your concern about in-depth reading! Nowhere did I assert that I think XBox modding is essential; I'm simply defending (or perhaps even playing Devil's Advocate) for those who do. Again, not relevant.
Wrong, read the thread Ed. I never said 100% of the people that mod their systems are doing so with ill intent.

I suppose I'm supposed to take it that flaming forumgoers for supposed (unproven, assumed) breaches of legality creates a fun, family-friendly atmosphere?
Fair enough. However, you're still definitely in Omnedon's face about nothing at all.

You've started flinging insults at me, and that's definitely not friendly (though I honestly could care less).

I don't hold grudges, but I do have a bit of memory and it works sometime. You've no business saying that after the record you've compiled for yourself, frankly. I recall countless times you've dug yourself in against Zach, and indeed your first appearance on the forum became a flamewar of you versus everybody else. You just are prone to getting into fights about stuff (yes, I'm the same way, but I do try to reason my way through things and not be insulting without a reason, or at least a little humor - goodness knows I come off wrong oftentimes enough). It takes two to tango. I'd be happy to drop this, but you're definitely giving off that air of "and I'm still right!" when indeed you're the one who has needlessly turned this into a heated flamewar. Though to be sure I'm not terribly impressed by everybody who took the chance in the first few pages to tear into Anthony1, either.

I've already explained the statement. If you can't accept it that's fine. You've not proven you are right or I am wrong. If you look at the context of the statement I am speaking about him genius. Before you declare that i'm such a moron look at yourself and understand what i'm saying. It's all in the thread.
That wasn't in your first post. Secondly, some people really do care about getting little scratches on their discs. Let me get this right - are you against people ripping their own discs or not? It was in a previous post, not my very first or last. I'm fine with whatever way people want to play their games. My initial statement was about Anthony1.
It would be fine if he ripped his own games. No reason for that though.
I was flamed and I responded
Xbox systems and software are not flimsly. He isn't a child so the risk of scratches are low.
Generally true. If it was a big problem like with the PS2 a class action lawsuit could be started against MS. My whole point in bringing it up. My whole point that it's not so necessary to (or no reason if you will) spend hundreds on a modchip and harddrive. Most likely your Xbox system will survive. Same with the software.
You've started flinging insults at me, and that's definitely not friendly (though I honestly could care less).
I was talking about Omnedon. You started in with a hostile post which is fine. I will agree to drop it as well.
but I do have a bit of memory and it works sometime. You've no business saying that after the record you've compiled for yourself
That's your opinion and in dealing with you that's all you seem to give. No back up. Just "you're wrong, I'm right." That doesn't work with me. When I argued with Meston (we're "cool" now) I backed up my opinions with fact. You both chose not to agree. That's fine. But b/c you believe i'm wrong doesn't make it so. This thread, more specifically the back and forth between you, O, and myself has been a battle of opinions. I've stated them and you're free to accept or reject. Your record "against" me is unimpressive and as far as i'm concerned you like to take shots at me. That's fine. If you want to continue this "debate" lets take it to PM. If not let this be the end of it. It's up to you.
