Hello, can anybody tell me if the NEO GEO AES gold system is region locked or not? Can a US system play Jap games. Thank you!

A US system will play JP games, however it will treat the game as if it's US... no blood, no fatalities, english language.

Keep in mind you can get a debug chip installed to select which region you want to play in. Samurai Shodown isn't the same without the blood!

I guess most people buy SS for fighting and excellent game technique instead of the gore-factor... Otherwise you could easily plug in Mortal Kombat 2 LOL no offense 8-)

Awesome character design and style > gore anyhow. Always thought it was dumb to see a character fall in two - but make no mistake the "falling cardboard cutout" effect in many early Neo Geo games (especially Sengoku, though games as recent as King of the Monsters 2 have it as well) always cracks me up.

prices for systems are so cheap right now that if you're buying one you should definitely get it modded with the Unibios 2.0.

Don't know what the Unibios is?

Check here:

Basically it's a bios hack that allows you to change regions (although all carts play on all systems), home/arcade, and even use built in cheat codes.

The cheapness of Neo Geo systems seems to me more a reason to get a JP unit and a U.S. one if you so desire ;D

I really don't know what you just said.

Do you mean the japanese system is cheaper than a US? Not so much so that it's the major factor.

Right now, fully modded AES systems go about $225-250 which is like $100 cheaper than 6-7 months ago.

Ah, but you said prices for systems, and I took that to mean in general. No harm done.

If you have the Uni BIOS 2.0 you can do all that stuff. If you have the Debug BIOS you are trapped in the dark ages. :)

I'm the Canadian based installer listed on Raz's site. the best mod you can do to the Neo, is a socket for that awesome piece of software.
