Hey guys, seems I have come to the right place. I want to start my videogame collection US based only, but also try to beat as many of these games along the way. I would like to start the collection in alphabetical order, so would the sega 32x be the first system I purchase? Also do you have any tips for a start outer(if thats a word haha)?
Thanks Alot Guys

hi, welcome aboard mate (yaaarh!)
Don't collect in alphabetical order, you might see a star wars 32x cart, and not buy it cuz it's not After burner, and then regret it all the way along.

Well, if you start with the 32x, it will take a while before you get to the Genesis and can finally play your 32x games.

Opps haha I meant starting in alphebetical order system wise. I understand what you mean with the whole regretting thing, but in order to use a 32x I would need to also have a genesis? I thought the 32x was just an upgradede system, if not what will I need?
thanks again

you need, a genesis, model 1 or 2. Model 3 i don't know if it works really. You should try the DP thingie where you look up system info.

Its really not about collecting everything. In all honesty you'd never get out of Atari 2600 before you died. Why dont you find a system or three that you genuinely like for whatever reason, be it current or retro and go from there. Once you've started that, then you can decide yout level of collecting be it cartridge only, or complete, just a specific developer or publisher (ie D= Bungie, P= SquareSoft) everything, or just a specific genre. Though theres some bragging here, its really about going after something you enjoy, because otherwise its really just going to be one big waste of time and money.

Doube post
The 32x will need either a genesis Model 1 or Model 2 to work as its just an add on and not a system in and unto itself. You should really think about going after things you know about, or put some research into things you might be interested in before going head long into psycho collecting like a fair number of us have. :D
Also, pop your head in here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11) and say hello.
Welcome to the boards

Thanks for your advice Papa. My favorite system is the Sony Playstaion/2 and I have been collecting games for that for about a while now, but while staying foucused on sony I want to broden my games and systems and thought going from the top while all along being with sony. Ive been looking around and thought this place would help me with that and the research.
Sorry I am a newbie to the old retro games and systems so I appologize for maybe some of the questions I may ask. But would this do me justice http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62054&item=8161393372&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW :/ haha althought I think Ill wiat for a different auction
Ill introuce myslef in a min to the thread :)

Here's my thoughts:
Hit up all the local Goodwills, Salvo Armies and various types of thrift stores and see what you can find in terms of Genesis or SNES systems.
IMO Genesis is better than SNES for the not-sure-if-you're-hooked retrogamer looking at early 1990s systems due to the low price of the systems (I'd say any model Genesis, 1 to 3 anyways, is cheaper than any model SNES, only the offshoot/obscure hardware is uncommon or expensive) and especially the low price of the games, which also often come boxed like they originally were. Lots of good uncommon titles on the system.
Again if you've got thrift stores, look through them. My advice would be to buy up whatever you think you've got money for unless it's a Madden sports game (even some of the Disney license games are really good!)
Here's some thoughts of games to get first:
Good sidescrolling games:
Golden Axe (series; these should be thrift store finds)
Shinobi games (series; Revenge of Shinobi and Shadow Dancer are the cheaper, Shinobi III seems to be worth a bit more; RoS and III are the best of these)
Castlevania Bloodlines (has an odd look to it but it's still pretty playable)
Comix Zone (extremely good comic book-like sidescrolling beat em up; I'm pretty sure this is cheaper than the SoR games by a good margin, though the superior PC version can still be found new/sealed for $2 on eBay, no kidding)
Slightly more expensive sidescrollers:
Contra: The Hard Corps (extremely hard one-hit deaths in the U.S. version, mostly boss battles, very impressive)
Gunstar Heroes (very playable, I don't thin you need more than $15 to get one shipped)
Classic non-scrolling arcade games worth getting:
Gauntlet IV
Super Hang-On
Spaceship shooters:
Darius II (think it's cheap?)
M.U.S.H.A.
Thunder Force series (II is a particular favorite of mine)
Good U.S. developed games
Blackthorne
Mutant League (games; Football and Hockey for example)
Gargoyles (not sure if this is a top-rank game, it's interesting though)
Crue Ball
RPGs:
Phantasy Star games (IV is by far the most modern feeling and most easily playable, but also the most expensive in the admittedly dumb looking box; II is great but you need to have a certain mindset for it)
There's all sorts of real gems for the system. Herzog Zwei is only $30; Forgotten Worlds is incredibly good and not nearly as expensive (less than $15 for sure); underrated gems like Sunset Riders and Zero Tolerance go for around $10. If you start with vanilla Genesis games, getting into game collecting should be a snap.

not trying to be offensive in anyway, but you say you really like your PS2 , are you sure you wanna take this dive into older games, because you may want to ease in , because you may find out you dont even like older games. that way you didnt just blow a ton of money to find out "shit, i think these games suck, now what do i do??"

Yup, that's why I say stick to the cheap games first. It's not like a $30 investment is going to break the bank.

Well I have played some older games on the older systems, and I had just as fun playing them as I did a ps2. Games are games and graphics are nice but do not make a game. I have a gamestop nearby but not many thirft stores, but there may be a few a little farther off.
I have to go now, but Ed, if you dont mind, I might Im you tonight or tomorrow over AIM if its cool.

Sorry, but collecting systems (or games) in alphabetical order is the wrong way to go about it. Even if you planned on collecting every game ever made, it would still be a poor plan.
If you like the PS2, try out Activision Anthology and Atari Anthology. If you like those games you will definitely enjoy collecting for the 2600.
But if you don't want to go that far back, it would make sense to collect PS1 games since those will work on your PS2.
As for your ebay link, that's a nice MIB Genesis, but you should be able to pick up a complete Genny at a flea market or thrift for $5-$10. The 32X isn't a particularly good choice of a system to start collecting for. If you just start collecting regular Genesis games, you will accumulate a 32X cache over time (because a few 32X games will probably come with the lots you buy), and from there you can form the basis of a 32X collection, provided you still have a desire to do so. And if you care about completing the collection, you'll have to pony up for the Spiderman game.
It would help if you told us WHY you want to collect. If you already like PS2 games I would say just buy a bunch of those.

Um ignore the previous post, the only Disney games you need are Aladdin and Mickey Mouses Magical Quest for the SNES.

HEHE, I often fantasize about playing my way through my entire collection in alphabetical order, but I doubt that I'd ever live long enough to make it all the way through to Z, unless I didn't try to beat them all, and I just played. But still, even just doing that would probably take me several years to finish. It sounds like you have all the symptoms of a potential hardcore collector though, so good luck with it. I started out with the Genesis myself, but the SNES controller is alot more similar to the PS/PS2 controller, so you may find that you prefer the SNES over the Genesis for "easing into" the retro scene.

PMs are good (I haven't been on AIM at all for the last few months...was on for only a few minutes today and didn't talk with anybody).
For some silly reason I've had my AIM set to block anybody not on my list (back in the dark ages of spamb0ts; I suppose they're still around though).
It's nice to think I could be worth talking to, but there's nothing wrong with asking folks 'round here about games. Lots of them know of far more games than I do! :P

Is the PS2 the only system you've ever owned? If you have or had older systems and liked them, I would just start with those. If not, I'd slowly work your way back. You could buy PS1 games for your PS2 or perhaps get a Dreamcast. Those games would be a lot more similar in style and gameplay to the PS2 games you enjoy than the ancient stuff.

collect what you like, that is the most important i think (and said above), i started 2 years ago with a NES because i liked that system in the past but i never had one ... i have games and systems now where i could only dream about 15 years ago, and i like that :) Just looking over my gameshelfs makes me happy, i don't need to play those games, i want to have them! I buy cheap games even if i don't know what they are just to fill up the shelfs :)
On the other hand, i bought an Atari 2600 and 7800, but i never bought any games since ... i hate those systems, i think because i didn't play those game when i was young. I pass games for those systems up even if they are very cheap. Same with older systems than the NES, no need for that in my room-o-doom :D
Further more i can agree to go out hunting, if i bought all my games off eBay it had cost me much more and it didn't was so much fun! And seek a collecting budy or a forum like this, talking about old games with other intrested people is a big part of the fun imho ... most outsiders are only thinking why does he spent so much money on that old crap  (don't listen to them ;))

This is great advise, it is always better to collect for the systems and games that either have sentimental value or you like to play. :)
