View Full Version : Fallen or Forgotten Franchises You Still Have Hope For?

The first one that comes to my mind is SONIC.
although I did like sonic heroes (the cube version anyway) I think Sega could do so much better.
I mean what happened to the once almighty SONIC TEAM that made the godly NIGHTS: into dreams? or even the first sonic adventure on DC?
I still have hope that Sonic may rise from the ashes of mediocrity and once again retain its rightful place alongside the other top in-house developers in the industry.
Also I would sell whats left of my soul for a new Killer Instinct on any platform. Xbox360? 8-)

Interplay has had the worst past year or so and ended up selling the rights to fallout three to bethseda (the makers of morrwind in case my spelling is worse then I thought) not that I don't think Beth can pull it off. I'm just pretty sure it isn't ever going to be the same.
Interplay claims there going to produce a mmorpg based off the fallout series. but the way things are going it seems there just going to sell off all the rights to there more worthy games then call it quits.

sonic may not be the powerhouse he was on the genny days, but i will always love him, and im looking forward to whatever the next sonic game may be

Until they make a brand new Bionic Commando game, preferably starring Radd Spencer (the original protagonist), I refuse to die!

Yeah! I mean, what the HELL happened to Killer Instinct??? I know arcades aren't a shadow of what they used to be, but there was plenty of time to get part 3 out. The last game in the series was Killer INstinct Gold back in 1996 on the N64... almost a decade ago! The 'Cube could use a good exclusive fighter, and a 2-D or even 3-D update of this series is WAY overdue.
My personal choice... Pandemonium. I loved those games!!!
Cheers

Neutopia (back from the TG-16/Duo days) yes it was a zelda rip off but I loved those two games.
Last we saw in the US at least. Neutopia 2 ended with that Gannon-knock off (whatever his name was, the big bad guy) beaten but then his hand popping out of a pile of rubble like Schredder in TMNT the movie and then the words Neutopia III - 199X... what a let down.
I agree with all the Sonic comments above. Sonic must return to greatness.

Eh, have you played Langrisser Millenium on the Dreamcast? It was pretty terrible. Now that the original Langrisser/Warsong developers have left Masaya/NCS, I'd rather they just let the series rest in peace rather than continue it with another team.
The Langrisser guys are behind the Growlanser series, btw. While the actual gameplay of the two series are quite different, they both have similar plots and graphic style.

I actually had an idea a few days ago in some detail about how one could build on some of the basic components. However, that's just that - basic components. One could build a really wicked, mind-altering game around the series, but the series has a lot of baggage, especially with SS2's hillarities. I like the funny stuff, but it would be nice to see a serious game in the series...I'm just not sure if SHODAN-worship would allow a new creator to get away from that without going the messy "prequel in a more advanced age" route. :(

Ugh. I meant the Genesis version. Like it far more than the SNES one. But that's a discussion for another thread. Either way it's a series that needs resurrecting.
And I MEANT to put Gargoyle's Quest in my list, but dammit, I got sidetracked and forgot!

Good question!
Headhunter - the first game may be one of my favorites of all time, the second game looked, sounded and got such poor reviews that I'm barely concerned with picking it up. Perhaps they can fix it and make it really cool again.
Earthbound - The SNES game was incredible, and I bought my N64 for the sequel that never came out. Whenever it comes out for whichever system it comes out on, I'll happily buy the system. I would love it to be a GBA thing.

Kid Icarus. They kind of missed the boat not releasing and SNES title. Or even an N64 game. It's going to be tough to go from NES to Nintendo ??(whatever the system gets called). With such a big gap in the technology used to deliver the game I can see many gamers putting up walls and going into this game with less than an open mind. That is if one ever gets made.

I second System Shock. Note that Irrational Games (the people who worked on SS2) have a game called BioShock that's in development and apparently has similar gameplay. Whether they will have multiplayer coop I don't know, and y'know...without SHODAN it's just not the same.
Earthbound - yes
X-Com - yes...make it more like the original this time...but better.
Kid Icarus: yes
And Startropics...that would be nice. Keep it 2D
There are lots of other ones that I'd love to see continued...can't think of them off the top of my head. Some, like Freedom Force, are already going to be continued.

I'd like to see a sequel to Beyond Good and Evil, but considering how BG&E sold, I wouldn't be surprised if it never happened.
And I'd like to see the 4x4 Evo series resurrected. Or in the least, I'd just like to see someone make the game that 4x4 Evo 2 could have been if the developers hadn't done a half-assed job in certain areas.

Heroes of Might and Magic - Now that 3DO is bye bye, someone needs to pick this franchise up and take it back to its roots. IMO, this is the greatest game franchise of all time. I'm still addicted to it.
Turok - Acclaim wasted this franchise. I loved the orginal Turok.

Be nice we somehow got an update for NiGHTS also.
I am REALLY against this. NiGHTS should stay on the saturn FOREVER. Taking it off the Saturn and updating it and putting it on a new console would ruin everything that is special about the game.
Also, I can not wait for Shenmue III. Too bad it will probably never be released.

I have enough problems acquiring the domestic games I want, too much for sure to start seeking imports. :( Then you have all the nasty modding and/or loaders what-have-you.
My point was for the software to be released in the US.

I wish Midway would commission a sequel to Joust. I suppose that Panzer Dragoon is similar to what I'd envision for it -- except you are shooting instead of bird bouncing your enemies. Some kind of Joust Adventure game could be cool; a 2D GBA update could be a lot of fun too.
Tomb Raider -- I'm kind of excited to see how Crystal Dynamics pulls of the new Lara Croft game. Hope it harkens back to the first 2.
Finally, I'd like to see a proper sequel (or reimagining) of Flashback: Quest for Identity.
STAR TROPICS!!!!!!!
:D
Come on Nintendo,
Gimme more star tropics.
I was very happy to read in the latest issue of OXM that there is a new Tomb Raider game in the works. I feel that they could do SO much with that franchise. Imagine the graphics of the excavation site in Doom 3, done with an Egyptian theme and with the same high level of detail. It can't be too hard to elevate a Tomb Raider game to a higher quality.
I also look forward to the day when Rare starts kicking out their magic on the Xbox with greater frequency. Hurry up, Rare!! Bring on Kameo!!!

King's Field. Ok, I realize the series was never any good in the first place, but I can't stop playing them. I keep playing them and they keep sucking but a little evil voice keeps telling me to pop in the next one. Its gotten so bad that now I blame all my poor gaming related decisions on "the King's Field voice". Maybe if they make a good one, I can break the cycle.

Wonder Boy aka Monster World series.
This is a PERFECT type of game for the GBA/DS portables. Sega hasn't completely forgotten about the franchise because recently Monster World III and IV were released for PC on emulator discs and Asha from Monster World IV was in a 2004 capsule toy series. Monster World I is available from Sega on cell phone in Japan as well.

Maybe it's just me, but I have a completely different definition of "fallen franchise" than probably over half this thread.
A lot of people are naming franchises that simply haven't released a game in a long time, like Kid Icarus or Killer Instinct or NiGHTS or Rez or Earthbound. To me, none of those apply. When I think of "fallen franchises," I think of things like Tomb Raider. That is, franchises that were once loved but then became terrible. Franchises that never released bad games never "fell," in my opinion. They were just ignored or forgotten.
Fallout I think is a great answer. I did not like the last couple outtings of the franchise, and a lot of other people didn't either. But I have hope. One day, the franchise is going to return to its awesome roots.
Sonic is another good one. Sonic Adventure 2 was a big letdown, and Sonic Heroes just further dragged it down. Sonic is such a simple and fun concept though, it has to make a comeback. It just has to.
