I go to Swap meets, garage sales, flea markets, Rummage sales, Pawn shops, and charity shops (good will, salvation army, so on), and 99% of the time I find nothing. Sometimes I find R1's that I already have. My find was a box of Atari 400/800 tape cassettes. 17 programs for $4. I sold them to a guy in Scotland for $50. I started my collection with about 300 games (R1 through R4, but I remember an R6 thrown in), all for $2 to $3 off of a lot auction on Ebay, a guy I found on Craigs list, and one or two here or there. Other than that, NOTHING!

My best NES finds...

One time I got a BIN on eBay for 3 NES titles. Mega Man 6, The Legend of Zelda, and Bonk's Adventure. All were mint/complete for a low price of $15 BIN.

The only one I think is a better score than that was a sealed The Legend of Zelda for $15 BIN about 4 years ago. I sold it soon after for about $200. It was in pristine condition too! I sold it a bit before the big Hot Topic old school emo kid fad struck in. :/

I really wish I had kept it.

Also one time a friend of mine from San Francisco sent me a bunch of games because he didn't play them any more... it was about 30 boxed/complete NES games and 10 boxed/complete SNES games.

NES stuff is some of the hardest to find for me (as far as rare stuff goes). All of my good finds are Atari 2600 games and PS1 games. The only find I've gotten for NES was a cart only Dragon Warrior 2 for $20. Eh, what r u gonna do.

My best NES finds have been:

- Caltron 6-in-1 -- $20
- Little Samson -- $3

I found both of these titles in the wild about two years ago, at game stores in somewhat out of the way places. I've had a few other good finds at these stores since then (including *pristine*, 100% complete copies of Breath of Fire and Secret of Evermore for $8 each), but I'll stick to NES to keep from going off-topic... :)

my best find use to be the mint in box complete nes control deck for $35 untill my game cube box decided it wanted down from the top of my shelves knocking off said NES system in box.

one of them landed right in my chest.....it wasnt my NES either.

this was 5 minutes ago....i am rather fuckin pissed at the corner smashed in because the game gube boxes are so tightly packed they stop being a box and start being an orb.

I know you ask for best find in the wild, but over here its not usual to sell old retro game, unfortunatly :( So i will list my best NES finds that i got online :)

- Complete Lion King SCN code in great condition for $37. The SCN code of this game is incredible hard to find complete, could easaly get $300 for it.

- Complete Flintstones 2, also SCN code for about $30 - $35. Only complete SCN copy i've seen for sale in 2 years.

- 3 sealed copies of Action 52 for $13.5 each.

- Ufouria prototype that got difference from the retail. Not exactly a "best find" since i payed much for it, but damn cool to own it :)

Does anyone here want to sell an NES system cheap? The one I got on Ebay doesn't work... I'e not had time to change the 72 pin, but I wouldn't mind having a cheap second system.

Best wild-finds, but as jajaja said, there aren't too many places around here to find games in the wild:

- PAL (SCN) Stadium Events x2, 50 SEK(~7 USD) each, carts only
- Lion King (SCN), 50 SEK, cart only
- Little Samson Prototype, 25 SEK (~3.50 USD), haven't found any differences yet

i've got over 600 NES games, and most have been found in the wild (very little ebaying/trading action) so i've got some decent finds.

aladdin deck enhancer (boxed): sold to me by weight at a recycling centre $0.60

TMNT: tournament fighters: $5

Dragon Warrior III: $5

Action 52 (I've had 4 copies in total over the years): two of which I got for $5

Bomberman 2: free, given to me by Doc Kaos (I was able to repay the favour later by finding him a rare xbox game)

Chip & Dale 2: $4

Contra Force: $10

All black box games (loose) including DK Jr. Math, Stack Up, etc. with an NES system at a goodwill auction: $25

Flinstones 2: $40 on ebay before the game became well-known

Godzilla 2: $5

Ubisoft Indie and the Last Crusade: $4 on ebay

King's Quest V (complete, mint): $4

Little Samson: $20 on ebay before it became a popular rarity

Mighty Final Fight (complete, mint): $7

QIX (complte, mint): i forget, but cheap comparitively. it was when EB was getting rid of all their NES games and not taking them as trade-in anymore and they were finally all the same price ($5 or something close to it)

Snow Bros: $8

and when i first started collection i basically bought anything that looked nice and before i even knew it was an accomplishment i had all the Ultimas and Might & Magic. I couldn't have spent more than $5 per cart for those.

I've never been much of an NES type of guy, so I never really picked up too many games for it. But I always kept an eye out for games that might be rare.

I went out to my local flea market (which is absolutely huge) last year, and at one guy's stall, amongst all the INTV, Atari, and Genesis games, was a nice stack of NES carts.... with an odd looking one on top. I bought it, along with a stand-up comedy CD, for 5 bucks. Got it home, looked it up, and discovered how incredibly rare it was. It was a Myriad 6-in-1 cartridge. Videogame Collector's Magazine listed it as being worth $150, which blew me away. I then looked at DP's rarity guide, and it said it was worth $350! I held on to it for a while, not really interested in selling it, but then my car needed work, so I sold it on eBay. I ended up getting $660 for it!

Found them at a local video store about 8 years ago for $5.99 each. Still got em too.

My second best NES find was 2 sealed Cheetamen 2 carts off Ebay in a dutch auction 7 years ago. Ended up paying around $25 each. I was really stupid though and traded one for a bunch of new Xbox and PS1 games 3-4 years ago, but I still have the other sealed copy in my collection.

I found Pac Man (Tengen), Ms. Pac Man (Namco) and Tengen's Tetris for NES, each priced at $2, inside of an old video store. The Pac Man's were loose, but Tetris was boxed (no manual). They had over a dozen other games there which they were clearing out to make room for Playstation 1 and 2 games. I didn't bother with any of those, since they were worth no more than the $2 list price and I already had every last one of them. Best to just leave them for somebody else. I later sold off the three games I did buy within a space of two months.

I got my top loader (mint) for free my first day on the job at gamestop a while back. Other ones I'd rank up there are CIB Final Fantasy for free, and VICE Project Doom proto for $5 at a local game store.

Unlike when I made my original post, I have a small NES collection now, so here's a better answer:

-A Top Loader for $15. Came with an original controller instead of a dogbone, but no big deal.
-As for games... well, I got Qix in a trade, but that doesn't count. Alright, I got Burgertime for a buck, and Donkey Kong Classics for $2.50, which was nice because prior to that every copy I saw of both games were horribly overpriced and both were on my want list.

I've already made a post in here, but I seen the thread again and thought of my best find ever! This would be for any video game system, not just NES. Here is what I found:

Complete NES, Loose
10 Loose Games, the ones I can remember:
10 yard fight
baseball
SMB/Duck Hunt
SMB 2
SMB 3

and about 45 LP albums including the Beatles White album. College student threw them away and I of course picked them out of his garbage with him laughing at me. I must have been 16-17 at the time. That was an awsome find. I still like the fact that the guy was laughing at me when I asked if I could take the stuff. Who Laughing Now? LOL.

My NES collection has grown to nearly 130 titles, so I thought it was time to post again.

I found a cart only Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers 2 in January for $5. That was a grail for me since the first game was one of my favorites on the NES, and this one has become a favorite too. It's just as fun as the first game and feels more like going through a full episode of the show. So far, nothing has yet to top that, but getting Crystalis cart only for $2.50 and TMNT III cart only for $1.99 earlier this year wasn't bad, either. :)

And since this was a trade it doesn't count, but I'm glad to say that I worked out a trade for a cart only R.C. Pro-AM II last month, another grail. :D

So here's another bump - I look forward to reading about some more awesome finds!

Last time I counted my NES collection, it was at 80. That was a year ago. I'm sure by now it's at least at 100-120. My best find would probably be Bubble Bobble, Megaman 4, and Megaman 5 all for $10 at a flea market. Also, to me any game (other than sports and smb/duck hunt) that's $1 or under would be a good deal: Ninja Gaiden w/manual for $.25, Barbie(ugh) for $.50, Joust for $1, and Megaman 2 for $1 are just a few games I've gotten cheap. Also, the sealed copy of Kirby's Adventure I got 2 or 3 years ago for $7.99 onEbay would be in a close second for my best deal.

I would say some of my best and favorite nes finds are

a prototype Final Fantasy for $5
R.C. Pro am 2 Complete for $2
Bubble Bobble 2 for $12.99
Snow bros $7.99
Flintstones 2 for $7.99

40 complete games with a boxed control deck and a bunch of extra controllers(games to include both Zeldas, Lolo 1,2, a ton of others. all boxes not crushed or rounded corners either) $80

My best NES find: a poorly listed eBay auction with:
4 R.O.B.'s
2 1/2 complete sets of Gyromite accessories
1 complete set of Stack-Up accessories
1 Gyromite cartridge and 1 Stack-Up cartridge
Almost everything in excellent to mint condition!

All for $81+shipping!

I kept the Stack-Up stuff, upgraded my Gyromite parts, and sold off complete R.O.B. w/ Gyromite sets for a profit. I felt really blessed -- I thought I'd never be able to get the Stack-Up parts!

Well, when I first started collected roughly five years ago there were a handful of NES games that I really, really wanted but it seemed to take forever to find them. Off the top of my head I remember really wanted Yo Noid, Shadowgate, A Boy and his Blob, Journey to Silius, Codename: Viper. None of these games are really rare or anything, but it seemed to take me a lot of looking to finally find them so I was very excited when I finally did.

On the other hand, I have a handful of rare NES games that I've picked up, all for very cheap. I think the most I've ever spent on an NES game was ten dollars, because of the fact that I dont go out of my way to collect NES, but when I see a game for cheap I pick it up. Anywho, the rare titles I have are; Caltron 6-in-1; Solitare; Flintstones: Suprise at Dinosaur Peak; Action 52; Stuntkids; Bibble Buffet. Of the seven rare NES titles I have, four are complete in box.

So my best NES finds were a handful of games I really wanted to play, along with a handful of rare titles, all of which I got for pretty cheap.

I snagged a HK Multicart with a really nice selection of games back in my Funco days ... I can't remember how much I gave the customer, but it wasn't much ... less than $20.

I've also got a decent selection of Wisdom Tree games, and boxed copies of Mermaids of Atlantis and Rad Racket (I think both with instructions)....which I THINK are pretty rare in that state, no?

About 3 years ago I came across a Nes at a local flea market. Had 2 controllers, zapper, all cords. Also came with that storage thing that held the system and around 15 games or so. It was full of as many carts as it could hold. Included with it was another Nes game cart storage thing (the one with the garage door type cover that slides down) with more carts filling it. Most of the carts were loose, with booklets only. Titles in the collection? Basically stuff like Zelda 1 and 2, the second release of Metroid, Super C, Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, ect. Only good games. The only bad one in the bunch was Star Wars, which isn't even that bad, just average. Ended up being around 30 something carts in all I think. It was all in the flea market owners booth near the front, and she saw me looking at the stuff, and I haggled her down to around 60 bucks or so.

Heres old pics of the Nes and some of the games. Thought I had taken more pics then this of that purchase, but these are basically all I could find in my photobucket account related to it:

Definitly the best deal I got was a M82 demo unit with 12 games off a local auction site - I bought initialy the games and the seller told me that he has a "console" but don't work (or he doesn't know if does) - I've played for the games ~ 3$ each and seller put in the package the defective console as well - when the mailman arrived I was blown away by the huge box - and when I opened up I was even more surprised ...

The console was working (and still is) excelent - it only needed a good scrub (it was holded in a garage or something like that and was full of dust and mud)

I got a complete Stack-Up for NES off ebay, BIN for $25, found a NTSC Little Samson at a fleamarket for $3

Funny, those are my two greatest finds for the NES too.

Back in 1996, my trips to FUNCOLAND always included a sift through their stack of new NES trade ins. To my amazement, as I'm flipping through the carts, there was Stack-Up! I knew it was rare, even back then. They didn't even have it in their system or catalog, so they sold it to me at a generic price of $2 dollars.

Little Sampson was acquired at a local video rental store that had a bin full of NES games in their original boxes for sale. Can't remember the price, but it was less than 10 dollars. It was MANY years before I found out just how rare that game is!

Mine would definitely be my Star Force demo/prototype copy. I'm positive it isn't the only one in existence, but I've only seen pictures of one other and mine is in much nicer shape. Next would be my SharpNES TV I got with both controllers, remote, and 10 or 15 games all for $15. I know I had a post/picture of the Star Force up here on DP at some point, but can't seem to find it now. Someone more intrepid than I could probably track it down with the right search terms (and some extra time).

I once bought an NES lot off of Craigslist for $300 that had over 300 games, over half of them boxed or complete. Among the boxed games were Operation Secret Storm and Robodemons, which are among the rarest games I've come across. There were a handful of repeats and a whole lot of common games as well, but a tremendous amount of it was stuff I didn't have or had never seem before. I was able to more than make my money back and still kept 100 or so games for my suddenly growing NES collection. I learned so much about the games and what was available and it really made me fall in love with collecting for the system. I'm still an avid NES collector and I hope to reach 500 total some time soon.

It may not compare to some of the finds in this thread, but it'll always be the most important find I've ever had.

EDIT: I just remembered that I did have a pretty amazing NES find a few years back. A local record store rather unexpectedly announced that they had some old video games for sale. More often than not, I've found that this sort of thing leads to a small pile of unremarkable games with ridiculous prices. For the most part, this was true...except for the Dragon Quest IV they sold me for $10. :)

Cool, thanks! I looked through my photobucket folder where the image is, but I thought I'd taken a picture of just that cart, so didn't see the picture with it mixed in.

And yeah, reading through some of that thread sure is a trip. Only 2 years ago and things are sooooo different on the hunt.

I posted this in a different thread(top 3 greatest finds thread), but it belongs in the NES thread as well.

I was at the Flea Market and a lady was selling her son's NES collection so he could buy a two new PS2 games. She had a box of over 100 loose nes games. She was asking $100. I was thinking about it and she said, how about $80??? There were some great titles, most of which I already owned, but I bought it anyhow. At $.80 a game, I figured why not?

I picked out the dozen or so titles that I didnt own (you could only see the end label) and put the box in my office. Four months later a friend asked to borrow a Zelda cart. I remember there was a gold label-less cart so I dug out the box and grabbed the cart. I saw the small label on the front and immediately knew what it was, a GOLD NWC Cart !!!! I had just read about it on the internet a few weeks prior or I would have never knew what it was.( must have been 2001-2003-ish)

Not much to say about it, just luck. Well that and I try to go to the flea market every week. Back in the day, I would go Saturday morning and Sunday. The cart got sold a few years later(2003-2004) for about $5000. I was very happy with the price although now they get 3x-4x that. I always thought the repro stuff would bring the prices down alittle on the real carts, ummmmmmmmmmm, i was wrong.

longtime collector here, I thought I would share my best NES find. Back in 2002, I came across an old couple selling at a Flea Mart on the coast of Northern California. The place looked like the flea mart that time forgot, complete with an old man playing banjo next to his dog with a scarf at the entrance. Inside the flea mart had it normal wares: Knock off knives, bootleg toys, and way too many VHS tapes of movies nobody wanted to own. The couple that had a small booth(which was covered with blankets) was just setting up for the day. In the back of their booth, I noticed that they had some book shelving with boxed nes games on them. The bookshelf was slightly covered, but when it was uncovered...I gazed upon the sweetest selection of boxed nes games I had ever seen. The couple told me that they had a rental store business, and that the remaining stock was being lsold. Several unlicensed games from Bunch, Color Dreams, Wisdom Tree, as well as hundreds of uncommon games were on display. Here is the kicker of the story: The games were $4 each! I bought as many as I could afford, which at the time was about 200. I carefully picked ones that I was missing, however I also got ones that I could trade for ones that I still needed. I would say that over 100 of these games boxed games still reside in my Nes Collection today.

This thread made me think and its interesting that of all the systems and games I collect, the NES is the one system I don't think I've had any significant "find" for. Everything I've picked up locally has been common or priced accordingly. No R9's for a dollar or anything like that. Found a bubble bobble for a buck once, that's about it. Even my toploader was $50 with a dogbone controller but that's about the right price too I believe.

Weird, I've had great finds for every other system I own except the NES.

I found:

Megaman 6 for $3
40 game Nes lot on craigs list for $20 that included a toploader system

Those are probably my two best Nes finds in the wild. But if we count ebay I would say that my factory sealed copy of Ninja Gaiden 3 for $50 was my best find.

I've yet to find anything that interesting myself, but I have a buddy who still has a boxed copy of Bee 52 he got for a buck when a local grocery store was getting rid of its NES rental stock back in the mid '90s
