"I'm selling only becuase I've outgrown video games" - misc. ebay seller
Aint that a bitch! (ATAB!)
Have you seen people with that statement on their Ebay auctions. Talking about how they are selling their stuff because they have outgrown video games. What the F is that?
Are they trying to insinuate that once you've "grown up", you shouldn't be playing video games anymore?
Stupid.

I think it means that they've grown older, and they don't like games anymore.
I'm pretty sure it's not a personal attack on you, but I could be totally wrong.

I wouldn't say everyone that makes that statement thinks that way, as one can say they've outgrown something without implying that it's only for children. For example, a model train hobbyist may say that he's outgrown a basic type of train because he's more advanced in the hobby now.

Outgrown doesn't necessarily mean immature to mature, you know. People outgrow clothing all the time, or friendships, or bad fashions. Growth isn't only one direction.
I think you should spend less time on eBay.

I'll probably always like video games, but I have to admit that I can't get into them the way I could when I was in my teens.

I'll never outgrow gaming, just as I grow I grow into other things that eat up my time. So gaming, while still a big part of my life, takes up a lesser chunk of my time and attention than it once did.

I agree, I find I don't have the patience anymore. IE, I won't put up with horrible camera angles, cheap deaths, bad Ai, bad control and other aspects of gaming that used to bother me. then again, camera problems hadn't really been invented until 3d came along.

No need getting offended at an everyday phrase. My grandpa always told me he wouldn't give me allowance anymore because I was "too old for them damn video games." It's a fact of life that not everyone stays interested in things for as long. When I was 12, I remember my uncle unloading a huge box of G.I. Joes on me that he had picked up at a yard sale. Written inside in permanent marker was the name of a guy I went to school with. Clearly, he had outgrown the enjoyment of G.I. Joes, something I was thankful for! Then again, you have to cringe when you open the classifieds, like I did the other day, only to find "Nintendo '85 retro system w/ Excitebike, exc condition, $45." That's more or less profiteering on nostalgia, as so many are making a good living at (VH1).

You're taking this stuff too seriously. That's a common statement whenever you see ppl selling off their games, esp. if it's their whole collection.
I say "w/e... it's your life" and I don't care if they act as to insult others who are still in the hobby. Just worry about yourself and be at peace with your interests as long as it's not a detriment.

It's just dif'rent strokes for dif'rent folks...
Who knows, maybe they'll scare off some bidders with said message, bidders who may take pause to decide if they too, may have outgrown videogames...

Well... as far as outgrowing videogames, my mom turns 50 next month, and she plays video games more often than I do.
I don't think the sellers who say they have outgrown their games are trying to insult anyone at all, they are mostly just giving a reason as to why they are selling the item.

Note that this may also mean that, now that they are older, they have time commitments (wife, kids, house, etc.) that they did not previously have when they were younger and had more disposable time.

After the 16bit era died out I "grew out of it", basically I did not find all crappy 3d games much fun....then with the Dreamcast I got back into it again...I believe most things work like that.

It's kinda hard to say if it will happen to any of us because we're still so young. Who can tell what the future will bring? Maybe when I"m old and rich I won't be interested in games anymore either.

I think it's rare for someone to volunteer to "out grow" anything. My mother-in-law said to me "y'know, someday you're going to sit down and none of your video games will mean anything to you anymore". She's a practical person and she wasn't saying it because she isn't a gamer. She was saying it because she knows that just general life experience can change a person's priorities, which basically means what you find worth your time will change with time.
I DREAD the day I de-prioritize videogames, but I think it already happened when I wasn't looking. I'm still obsessed with them, but I do more research on them than actual playing.
Anyway, I don't think people who say they've outgrown anything are being snotty about it, if anything, I think there's more sadness and nostalgia than some sense of acheiving a "new level" of maturity. It's just another way of saying "I *really* used to enjoy these, but now, for some reason, I don't anymore, so it's time to pass them on to someone who does."

I'm not sure it's necessarily *your* age that would be the issue. It'd be how long you've been gaming.
Since my 50+ year old dad still plays video games I'm pretty confident that at the same age I personally could still be gaming :)

So I got curious and searched for "outgrown" in ebay and then looked at the video game auctions. Most were by parents whose children had "outgrown" various games. One auction was by a person who had "outgrown [his] enthusiasm" for collecting video games. Hey, I can understand that. He's getting rid of a gamecube. Which can't hold much nostalgic value for him, I imagine. Here's the auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62054&item=8172218003&rd=1
Although he does say that he's going to get rid of his classic stuff pretty soon, too. That's too bad.
Anyway, I think that Anthony is just objecting to the perceived condescending attitudes by some of the sellers who are liquidating their collections. Part of it (saying they've "outgrown" video games) may be to give a "good" reason to the buyer why the seller is selling. As opposed to "my basement flooded so I'd like to sell you this broken Sega CD". Maybe part of it is to reassure the seller that he's doing the right thing. I don't know. There was a time when video games were marketed squarely and almost exclusively at kids. Those days are over. The world is changed. But many people still view video games as inherently inferior to other forms of entertainment. Give it a few decades.

The fact that he adds "ain't that a bitch" to the end of the title would imply to me that he's outgrowing his collection somewhat reluctantly.

Ditto. Stuff happens in life and within a blink of an eye one could suddenly lose interest in games, or at least have a decidedly moderate drop in interest. Stuff like finding out your (old) best friend died, finding true love (particularly for the 1st time), etc.
I like my video games but I know they went to the backside when I got my first girlfriend.
Just remember... if we aren't careful, the things we own... may end up owning us. Scary food for thought...

Ummm. ah ... no
I actually added the "ain't that a bitch" part.
That was my initial reaction when I first read that.
But to be totally honest with everybody, I was just kinda joking around with this. Man you guys really took this quite seriously. It was just a quickie, throwaway reaction by me.
No major epiphany or anything.
I think the real reason why I see people say "I'm selling this becuase I'm older and I've outgrown my use for video games" is because they are totally lying to you. They sell games all the time, they make their living doing that, but they are trying to pretend that they are simply selling their own personal collection when in fact they are selling some retread thrift store gear.
I think what they are trying to do, is to pretend that there stuff is all original back from when they had it as kids, etc, etc. It's all bullshit. I normally don't believe anybody when they say that.
But back to the point at hand, this was just a quickie throwaway observation by me, and no big deal at all. I was mostly just joking about it. I'm quite suprised that everybody took my literally!

I think that different people just get in and get out differently
Im not old AT ALL ...just 17 right now - and I can already see changes in my gaming habits.
For example when I was 12 - 14 I could play games for hours. Heck if my mom would not turn off the TV - I would play all weekend without stoping.
Now when I play something I grow tired of it after few hours. I mean not like ...Im too sleepy to play - but more like I don't feel like it - or that is enough for today. So now I play for maybe 2 hours MAX at a time...and no one has to stop me from playing more
Like someone said already - I just can't get into games like I used to just few years ago. I can wait few days to see what will be on the next level. Im not magically glued to the tv anymore.
And wether you totaly loose interest in games, or just stop being so pasionate about playing them - it does not have to do with age or being mature. Heck many of you people ages 21 and up still play for hours and hours (like I used to) ...and there is nothing wrong with that.
But just the same there is nothing wrong with someone who lost his interest. Hell, just because I don't play as much does not have to do with me trying to be mature, or older, or showing off in front of you people. It is just what it is....people change.
