a few months ago a clerk at a Gamestop told me that he had just bought his 4th PS2 in almost as many years when I got my most recent PS2. O_O
I am on my 3rd and hopefully last PS2.
The one I currently have is the online combo pack version 50001 (I think) and has worked perfectly since I purchased it. It is also far less noisy than the first 2 PS2's and seems to stay very kool no matter how long the system is on my first one got very hot within a couple hours of gameplay.

The first PS2 I got back in 2002 was the only one I had any problems with but I had only had a few DRE at the time when I traded it to a friend, it now has the door missing and is plain nasty lookin but amazingly enough it still works.
I was wondering how many other gamers here have had 2 or more PS2s for whatever reasons :hmm:

Bought mine on launch day. Still have the same one years later. And I abuse the Hell out of this thing. Nor have I ever cleaned the laser lens. Still going strong. These constant "PS2 failure rate horror stories" baffle me, as I've never had an iota of trouble.

Same here, I got a launch day system and have never had a problem. I thought I had a lens problem, cleaned the lens and dusted off the system, still got DRE. I thought my ps2 was dead. Then I looked at the 3 discs I was using to test the lens, all three had fingerprints on them. I felt like a dumbass, cleaned the disc and have not had a problem since.

Same here. Although I bought a second (modded) one, both are still up and running fine.

I just got my second. All of Sony's early models suck big time. Remember the PS1? Everybody I knew who got the first model had to turn the bastard upside down just so it would play anything.

yes I agree with both tholly and jajaja I dont think the PS2 is a "bad" system nor was I trying to bash it ;)
Im just curious as to how many of us have had multiple PS2's is all.
The only reason im on my 3rd "and not my second" is becuase I sold my second one for some lame reason x_x .

One.

Of course, I don't use it as home plate during a rousing game of kickball, but that's just me. :)

Four? Gotta call bullshit on that GameStop clerk. After three, why even bother?

Got two, both work fine though one has a slightly weak laser.

I prolong the life of my machine by running everything where possible off the hard drive. So generally the only time the laser gets used is to boot HDAdvance and when ripping games (ORIGINALS!) to the HD.

2 of them. i got a launch day system and my most recent one was purchased about 2 years after the ps2 release. its still running but wont play ps1 games sadly.

i baby my PS2's as they get the most play. but i recently case modded my new PS2 and it just gets more attention from friends and relatives so it gets more play(its a clear case, people seem to like the clear hah)

Just one, a 30001 that I got back in 2001. Works great, plays blue discs and PSX discs with no problem. I did get some DREs a few weeks after I had started storing the system vertically back in 2003, but after some advice from a friend I stored it horizontally again and haven't had a problem since. :)

Zero. Who needs a PS2 when you got a DC? @_@

Oh so true. just got my DC keyboard ad mouse and i'm kicking @$$ in Q3A!

i still wish i had a PS2 for my collection, the eyetoy is hella cool. i remember going to JC penney and afterwards to a gamestop, they had an eyetoy set up but the camera was aimed waay to high. i had to hit the big robot with my JC penney's bag!
if anyone has a PS2 for cheap i'd be lookin' to buy!

One U.S. (30001) and One JPN version (also 30001). The U.S. one hates Blue Disk and PSone games, and I'm too lazy to replace it at the moment. My JPN one is doing good so far, though it whistles louder on Blue Disk games.

I've had mine since 2001 and still only one DRE and works perfectly!

EndlessChris
02-23-2005, 03:32 PM
I got mine at launch and started getting DREs last year. Sent it to Sony and they fixed it up free of charge. It's a bit slow to load but otherwise works fine.

Im on my 3rd

The first one I got April 2001, started not to read some disk in Dec 2003. Traded it in and got another the next day, had it since Oct of last year until I sold it because I needed some dough. Got another a month later just before they ran out of the 50001 systems at EBgames.com

Sold my first one. Second one died. Third on (PSTwo) going strong. Pretty sad, huh? Why should anyone have to buy multiple systems? I still play my original PS1, and my original NES.

One. I got it August 15th 04. It's the Online Bundle with ATV offroad Rally 2.

I don't play it much though.. I can't find many PS2 games that interst me. I only have 5 PS2 games now. I only play 3 of them, and i keep ATV for the sake of having a complete PS2..

Cirrus: it makes sense to have more than one system of the same type. After all, you don't want to open that Sealed atari 5200, do you? ;)

I've had 3 of them but always just got bored of it and then sold them! I'll end up buying a fourth one though - one of the slimline models. It'll be handy for my girlfriend's house. She doesn't have a DVD player and she doesn't have a lot of space...so this'll do for a wee standby console when I'm visiting!

I bought one at lauch (november 2000), which broke a few month later.s I got the new one in (i think) march 2004. So, I've had my current PAL one for almost four years now. But, It is not in great condition as some of my games have trouble with loading.

So, I am playing now on my 2nd PS2.

3

1. Got it at launch, failed about 2 years later, I repaired it, it failed again, repeated a couple of times. A friend has it (I showed him how to repair it, again)
2. Got it about 8 months ago, a different friends borrowing it and its going strong.
3. Slim model, got it the week of its launch, it's with me at my dorm and going great.

Out of all my friends who've had a PS2 (5-7), only 1 of them has one that still works. They just kept dying and dying, one right after the other.

I have 5...and all work (I think, some are still new in the box in storage). I will explain however:

2x origianl US model one is the newer "+" model (the plus model is a back up)
1x Pearl white JP model (back up)
1x PStwo JP model
1x PAL model

I'm on my first PS2, its was refurbished before I purchased it.

The cd tray sounds like its hase some bad gears when I open the tray. It alsohas some sound problems occasionally. Lastly it takes a while for a game to boot up on its own. I have to tell it to start now.

I purchased the thing a little under 2 years ago, model 30001.

I have had five in total, I still own four.

My first blew up, leading me to purchase a limited edition Satin Silver version. (PAL)

I then bought an extremely rare Red NTSC U PS2, and then a bulk standard black Japanese one.

And just before Xmas, I bought one of the slimline one's (PAL) just for the sheer hell of it.

I have been tempted a few times to buy one of those nice Gold AU Gundam ones, or one of the other LE ones from Play-Asia, but have always chickened out. I wouldn't mind having a second slimline one though - An NTSC U one just as a spare.

No doubt if Sony ever release the slimline in iMac colours or something, then I would perhaps think about getting another PS2... But I doubt Sony will make any more LE PS2 consoles

I've only had one, though I had to send it to Sony once.

Actually... to be fair, I own two, but one of them is Japanese, so that doesn't really count :)

I'm still on my first. Got it pre-owned from GameStop's website in probably the second year of the PS2's lifespan. Haven't had any problems yet.

My Xbox, on the other hand, has started recently giving me disc read errors :/

I'm another launch user. Bought two new at launch, sold one for more than I paid for both (so mine was free) and haven't had a problem since. I store it vertically and NEVER move it or unhook it unless I'm moving, then I put it back into the original box with the packing material. And I've only done that once.

I'm still on my first PS2, but I'm not sure how much longer it's going to last. I got it in early 2001, and it worked great until a few months ago when I started getting the DRE's. I opened it up, cleaned and adjusted the laser, and it worked okay for another month or so. Started getting DRE's again and adjusted the laser again. It's still working but I'm waiting for it to just die one of these days. :/

I'm also on my first...never had any problems with it and I've had it for I would imagine about 2 years now. Of course, I don't use it as often as I do some other systems which might explain that. I have bought 3 Playstation consoles...got the first one in 1995 a few months after launch day and it bit the dust about 5 years later. My second one has the same original look and no trouble with it but I decided to pick up the PSOne version with it's own screen late last year.

I am on my second. I got my first when they offered the GT3 pack in setup. I had it for about 2 years and then it began taking too long to read discs. Then, I got my first DRE, but fought it off by cleaning the lens. I finally got a new one when I was playing my brand new (at the time) copy of Nightshade to skipping and stopping music.

My second is going strong after 9 months (thankfully got one of the last of the mk1's), but I refuse to play DVDs and CDs on it. I am convinced that doing so drastically shortens the life of the unit. I think that contributed to what did my first one in as I am very careful, some would say hyper-anal, with my equipment.

I am on my third. The first two I bought pre-owned though.

The first one I got never worked from the day I got it. I took it back to the video store the next day, as it wouldn't play DVDs or PS2 games (would play CDs and PS1 games ... but I already had a PS1!)

The second one I got was dodgy as hell, and after a couple of months it looked like it was on its last legs. So I took advantage of an offer where you could trade one in with a couple of games and pay a few quid and get a brand new silver model.

Palmed off some extremely poor games, gladly handed over my money and got a new silver PS2. Never looked back .. I have taken very good care of it!

I'm on my second, but really I've gone through 5 because the first three I got were used and messed out of the box so they were exchanged right away. After three bad used ones I bought a new one, sold it to a friend after a while, and then got another one a year later.

I've had 5, all stopped reading either cds or dvds, a couple doesn't read anything, and I still have three of them.

One got sold off with a rather large lot of games, and the other had the opportunity to be a stunt dummy for one of my friends. He literally tore that thing apart.

I'm now playing Gran Turismo 4 on my friend's PS2 (the first PS2 I borrowed to play GT4 was also DRE happy), and as much as Sony's gouged me for, I'm half tempted to get a slimline. I was going to pick one up when I got GT4 but the store was out.

Fate, I suppose.

I'm on my second. The first one worked fine but the laser was a little weak. Sold it to buy a V7, which is still working fine. Might be because I hardly play it though. I do know people who have had at least four PS1's and PS2's. I would never do that.

Now my 3rd PS2 is starting to screw up. I was watching X-men2 on it and it was skipping and freezing up but kept playing. :frustrated:

Still seems to play all my games just fine and have had no DRE yet so Im not sure what the problem is.

Ive only had the system for about a year and so far has only done this on DVD movies wich ive only used it maybe 10 times to even watch movies I usually use my new PC for that.

IMO, how long your ps2 lasts directly reflects your care of it. In my experience this holds true.
I am on my 2nd ps2 by choice only. I had the laser on the last one realigned, and then a new laser gear put in. I then sold it, because I couldn't pass up a new slim ps2 for $10 out of pocket after sale of my old ps2. I do miss the front loading, huge v7 i used to have, though :<
Now, I logged WAY TOO MANY HOURS on that last ps2. I was off school for nine months. I worked 30 hours a week, slept another 55 or so a week, and the rest was pretty much gaming. at least 2/3 of my gaming was ps2. do the math. It still runs fine. I work with the 2nd owner of it..and it runs great, still.
Meanwhile, A lady at work is bitching because she just bought her son a THIRD GAMECUBE...as he's broken the previous two....Put that in your crack pipe and smoke it.

I've owned 3, one broke, the other two are being lent to friends at the moment. I did have 4 as my brother took some guy's ps2 as collateral until the guy paid him back but the guy paid up so.
