the back of my fan is covered in dust, could this make it overheat fast and cause it a shorter life? I was wondering what effects might come out of this as I am not sure how to clean it properly.

Mines been like that since a few months after I got it (Launch PS2). Other than a few DREs every now and then on blue disc games, it works just fine.
Dont worry about it. The fan blows air away from the system, if it flowed toward the system then you still would pry be fine.
