WOW! I just got this game for the PS, and it is AWESOME! No wonder why I always heard so many good things about it! Now I really wanna check out the Saturn version! I hear it's even better on the Saturn, but at least now I have a copy to tide me over until I can get a copy of the original. I still can't believe how cool it is though! If it had come out earlier in the Saturn's life, surely it would've been released here in the states. Talk about a hidden gem!

I can't beat it though! I got as far as the final boss battle with the unlimited continues, but I can't beat it! I think it's meant to be played with 2 players. I can defeat the big red boss before the giant purple boss alright, except I usually have to use one bomb on it. That leaves me with 3 bombs to use on the last boss. And I have to use all 3 of them to get to the part where he fires the massive green laser. I can usually manage to survive that OK, and the barrage of smaller green laser after that, but then he goes nuts on me with some smaller bullets and I can't seem to navigate my way through that attack! I have no more bombs left to use at that point, so all I can do is try to dodge his bullets, and there's just too many of them to avoid them all!

So I seem to need a friend or some good cheat codes. And I don't have any friends available. I have a friend coming to visit soon who might be able to help me, but he pretty much sucks at shmups, so he wouldn't be very much help anyway. I wish I knew someone else nearby who's as good at shmups as I am. I'm no master, but usually I can beat any shmup as long as I have enough continues. But unlimited continues aren't helping me with this one! I've tried all 3 different weapons, and none of them have helped. I think I know the best one to use, since only one gets me as far as I can get most of the time without any problems. But I need more bombs or something! If I had a code for unlimited bombs, then I could do it for sure. Yes, it would be cheating, but DAMN, have you ever played this game? It's tough as nails! Definitely a dodging game, but even a good dodger like myself has trouble with this one! You need godly dodging skills for this one, and I'm not a god! So I need unlimited bombs for sure, or an invincibility code that I can use.

I don't know what else I can do to beat it besides try to practice on it to death, but I got tired of fighting the last battle over and over again after about an hour or so of trying to defeat it. I've never had so much trouble with the last battle of a shump before. BTW, I was playing it on geki mode. I'm not sure what that is, but it's the default, so I assume it's normal mode. I didn't wanna try it on easy, in case I could get something unlocked by playing it on geki mode. And forget hard mode, it's hard enough already! So should I try it on the easy mode instead? Is there even anything to unlock?

BTW, about the weapons, the lightning weapon is the coolest weapon I've ever seen in a shmup! Usually it's the best one, but in some situations like the last boss it doesn't seem to be effective enough. So I was using the one with the bullets and missiles for the last battle. I tried it with the lasers too, but they didn't seem to work well enough either. So not the blue (lightning) weapon, not the red (laser) weapon, but just the yellow (bullet & missile) weapon seems to be the only weapon that I have a chance of beating it with. But I can only get as far as when it zooms out and zooms back in on the purple boss. Once it zooms back in, I'm toast. I hope that I'm close to killing it at that point, but it wouldn't surprise me if I have a long way to go.

Anyhow, this game rules! It's definitely the best shump that I've ever played since Raiden! And you know Raiden is one of the best classics of all time. So I can't believe that i waited so many years to get this game! I heard all the hype back in the day, but I never got a chance to see it in action, much less play it, so I never bothered to import it. And now I wish I had! I'm like OMG!

Everything about this game totally rocks! But especially the big red boss, and the squid boss, or whatever it is! I was freaking out over that! And all the special effects too! It's unbelievable! I never even heard of Warashi before, but if this was their first and only shmup, what a waste of talent! Did they ever make any other shmups? A sequel to this game, I hope? I'm amazed at how good it is! The hype never did it justice! I always thought that it was just a cult classic, but this is true mainstream classic shmupping material here!

No wonder Natsume decided to port it over to the PS for us! It's the most underrated shmup that I've ever played! I can hardly wait to see how much better it looks on the Saturn! Dang, all the greatness that I've missed out on for so long, I have alot of catching up to do! If any of the other shmups that I've missed out on are even half as good as this one is, then I've missed out on some truly great ones! And this game should be getting alot more hype!

Funny - I didn't even know they were the same game. I've had the PS game for over a year, but never got around to playing it. Meanwhile, I go with the ST-V cart all the time. If someone whats to trade for the PS version with the weird name, gimme a PM - I'd be happy to get this game into hands that would play it.

Shienryu is sweet candy!

Gekioh: Shooting King is one of my favorite shmups. I like the bonus modes too (especially the pocket and comedy modes). I can't seem to get past the last guy either.

If this helps, I got mine for 6 or 7 bucks used at EB last year. It might be cheaper there now.

The Japanese also got Simple Series 2000: Double Shienryu for PS2 which includes the arcade port and a version with 3D graphics.

I picked this up a few weeks ago, mainly because it was published by Natsume. It was like 5-6 dollars at EBgames. I haven't played it too much but it seems to be a pretty fun shooter. Love the lightning weapon!

It reminds me a lot of Raiden. I may have to get it back at some point.

I have to say it's not my personal favorites but still a good no-frills shooter. It reminds me *a lot* of Truxton with it's graphics and weapons.

The second game on the collection is the sequal which was once going to be released on the DC (it was listed to be released then vanished), it is a vertical shooter on a horizontal screen (like Radiant Silvergun) but is not as good as Shienryu. The PSone version is pretty good with all those extra modes included, I am not sure if it retains the tate mode or not.The tate modl is available in the Saturn version and the PS2 collection version. The PS2 collection has two tate modes, one is standard low res mode, while the other is line doubled.

Heh. You wouldn't be the first to call Shienryu/Gehioh a Raiden clone. But I like both of 'em, so it's not a problem in my book. Do you have Raiden Project?

I got it for only $8 shipped, factory sealed on ebay! Now if only I could get the original Saturn version factory sealed for that cheap! It's totally a Raiden clone, but now that you mention it, the lightning weapon is alot like the one in Truxton! Except it's way better than that! Totally awesome weapon! Too bad it's not awesome enough to complete the last battle though! I can't find anything that works! I still think that if I can ever pull it off, it's gonna have to be with the missiles, but I really do need a friend to help me out! I really don't have any gaming friends nearby anymore, and even if the few gamers that I know were close enough to help, they totally suck at shmups! So I'm just stuck. I may never beat this game without a Game Shark! I do have a PS Game Shark though, so if there's any code for it that might be useful, post them here! If I get frustrated enough with it, I'll try cheating!

The sequel sounds awesome! But I still don't have a PS2 yet. I'd certainly have it if it had been released on the DC though! BTW, does anyone know if the music in the PS version is the same as the music in the Saturn version? I'm just curious. It's pretty good music, but it seems like maybe it's a remix. I dunno why. I guess it just sounds too good to be the original music to me. I still can't get over this game though. That red boss is the shit! No wonder they put him on the cover of both versions! But he looks way better on the cover of the Saturn version. I really do need to get all the other shmups that I want for my Saturn. I may have to break down and start buying used ones. I hate to do that, but if it's the only way that I can get them now, I may have no choice. Games like this are just too awesome to be missing out on! If only I had more money way back in the days when you could find them all factory sealed easily! I would've gotten every single one of them as soon as they came out! Why the hell didn't I have the internet and ebay back then?

Had RP, sold it and Shienryu to the same guy at the same time. Long story... I can't say I wanted to do it, but I had to.

It's funny you bring this game up, Iron. It was just very recently in my Saturn rotation of play. I bought my copy back in May of 2003. Good nice solid shooter. Its restart points aren't as brutal as some others.

Here is my review of it if anyone is interested:

HEHE, now I'm wondering what Soukyugurentai is like! If it's actually better than Shienryu, then it must be a really godly game, because I think Shienryu is godly. SIGH... my Saturn shmup shopping list is still so dreadfully long... And I'll probably never find some of the ones that I want factory sealed...

Hey Sony, hey Microsoft, wanna guarantee a ton of extra sales for your new consoles? Re-release every shmup that was ever released on the Saturn, and then some! I'd buy any new console that had that many shmups for it! In fact, why doesn't some company get smart and make a dedicated shmup box? If I was rich, I'd do it in a twitch! I know it's still supposed to be a niche genre, but I don't care. We shmuppers deserve a flood of our favorites too! Besides, just imagine, a box like that would never run out of new games for it! If you re-released every shmup ever made, you'd have to end up rich!

Well OK, so you'd probably go bankrupt. But if you could afford it, why not? You'd have the biggest cult following in the history of videogames, your console would become a household name, and eventually everybody would want one. What? You don't have a ShmupBox yet? WTF is wrong with you?

Seriously, I can see something like that becoming very successful, if it was done right. Maybe not here in the US, but surely it would be a hit in Japan! There has to be a reason why so many great new shmups are still constantly flowing from out of Japan. Companies don't make games there just for fun. I know they do sometimes, but if it's really that much of a niche genre, then shouldn't it be long since dead by now? And yet it's not, so there you go!
