View Full Version : What's the best control pad for Genesis?

Whenever I've used a Genesis, I've always pretty much used the standard 3 button Genny controller.

I've tried the 6 button controller, but it seems a little small for me, and I've tried some of the arcade sticks, but they feel kinda cheesy, in terms of their build quality.

I've always been pretty content with the standard 3 button Genny pad by Sega, but I'm thinking that there must be a more comfortable Genny controller out there.

The standard 3 button Genny pad has a very stiff D-pad on it. You almost have to fight and struggle with that damn D-pad. And sometimes the buttons on the standard 3 button pad are kinda flimsy.

Is their a 3rd party control pad that people really like for the Genny? Or should I give the 6 button controller a chance?

there is one that is kinda medium, i think it was called the pro pad. I've seen one done by a no name company, and the same one done by performance, i have both, but they are both the same. The pad is almost black, with gray abc buttons and dpad, with black xyz buttons. Lemme google.

EDIT: the propad is the programable one, wich i believe no one knew how to program. The one i'm saying is the one i post on the bottom of this post, and yes, i got the colors backwards :P

So the one in the picture, that's the one that you recommend?

I'm primarily looking for one with a more comfortable, and accurate D-pad.

There are different unmarked variations of the standard Genesis controller. Some have a "looser" d pad than the others.

Exactly.

I've always preferred the 6-button controller over the standard Genesis controller. It's so much easier to use, and a lot more responsive, in my opinion.

Funny, but I've always preferred the pack-in controllers for almost every system.

I love the original black rubber, single red button 2600 joy stick....

I prefer the original 3-button Genesis pad.

And I like the original NES cigarette pack joypad.

Guess I'm a fuddy-duddy...

Besides the offical Sega brand, there is one I perfer, I can't find a picture of it

Yet, there is one made by InterAct, it's called SG-6 Pro pad, actually has one of the smoothest D-pads and I can pull off more moves in Super SF2 easier actually and the size of it is a little better

I love the six button one myself, even if it is a bit small. I also love the built-in turbo function--it keeps me from getting carpal tunnel when I'm playing a shooter.

I always use the standard pack-in controller, unless im playing something that requires 6 buttons, in which case i use the sega brand 6 button pad. Im not one for third party controllers in general. The pack in controller may be stiff, but its what i grew up playing on, so its good enough for me.

Hey.

The original 3 button arcade stick is really an arcade quality joystick. The 6 button one is a mess. I have broken 3 of them so far. I love the original arcade stick for all the old shmups. But for the newer 6 button stuff or sonic spinball you cant beat the interact programmable. Where you can gonfigure the shoulder buttons to whichever you need.

I have also had at least 4 original pack in pads with the red lettering that have gone bad. The ones with the white lettering seem to be much better.

I didn't quite like the 6 button pack in.

I have the arcade stick (first party) but i dont really care for it. The stick is nice, but the buttons are not so great and are really loud.

What makes it great is not only can you set autofire, but you can program shoulder buttons, which makes it ideal for fighting games.

The controller pictured here is actually the smaller version of the 6-button. It's most easily identifiable by the Mode button being placed like an R trigger button. I love this thing, because I have somewhat small hands. Any time I play the Genesis, that's the one I go digging for.
