View Full Version : Goo Gone on Top of Discs?

I just ripped off those stupid (whole disc) Hollywood Video labels of some of the games I got in their 4 for $20 (good deal) sale. Anyway, on some of the discs no residue was left, but on some there was a great deal of sticky residue. Is it ok to use Goo Gone on the topside of the disc to get the stickiness off? Can it take out the color/screw up the top label? I just wanted to know before I tried this.
Thanks

Ive had no problem using goo gone on the tops of disks, but that was in small amounts in an attempt to get rid of permanent marker. I am wondering if the "magic eraser" can be used on the top of the disk.

That was a bad idea! You have to be careful when ripping off labels from discs, as the data is found directly underneath. If the glue is really firm, you could've ripped off too much, and damaged the data below...
Hence, why it is more dangerous if you scratch the topside of the disc than if you scratch the shiny side...

I didnt rip any part of the disc off, it just left the sticky crap. All of them play just fine on my PS.

I've never had a problem using Goo Gone on the top of a CD.

I have had some paint come off. Usually, not. Just make sure that goo gone is soaked in really well so the label comes off with almost no resistance. Usually it will leave glue behind. If so, spray it again, let it soak for 2-5 minutes and then gently wipe the glue off. Do not keep rubbing the glue away if it takes more than 2 swipes. Spray again in this case and let it soak in.

Good God!! Do you not realize the info is closer to the top of the disc than it is to the bottom?? My God man, don't use a f*cking magic eraser on a data disc!! @_@ Use your thumb and push it to the edge of the disc (over and over its a tedious process) But in NO WAY use a magic eraser or any chemical solvents!!

I have to agree, I just ruined disc one of a complete Fear Effect with Goo Gone. (I know it's not rare or valuable but that's still one more game that goes into the trash) The disc played fine however there was some red sharpie on the cover of the disc - so I LIGHTLY worked it off with a SMALL amount of Goo Gone. Now the damn thing won't even initialize. If you're going to try anything maybe use some windex?

I've used WD-40 to remove the sticky residue off hundreds of cd's and dvd's.
Just spray it on the disc and then rub it lightly with your hand and fingernail.
Then clean it off with a papertowel and then use Windex to finish cleaning it.
Works EVERY time and IT WILL NOT HURT your discs.

Some of the information given here is wrong.
Data on CD's is found on the top layer, but only if it is burned.
Data on DVD's is always found in the middle.
So it's only if you're cleaning burned CD's that you should really worry about scratching the top surface. I've cleaned many discs (including DVD-R's) with goo gone w/o any ill effects to the disc below.

ive had pressed cds not work when the top layer got scratched
so you should be careful
is it safe to use WD-40 with your bare hands?

Well, I wouldn't go wiping my ass with WD-40, but it's pretty safe otherwise.
WD-40 is Jesus in an aerosol can.

Personally, I always use Goo Gone to get rid of stickiness... never had a problem at all. Though I am now careful of whether or not I choose to remove the sticker in the first place after a blockbuster sticker decided to take part of Marvel vs Capcom 2 with it. :(

I learned the hard way ... some goo left on top of a CDI CD, tried GooBGone and it got rid of it, along with most of
the graphics underneath. :eek 2:
It likely has to do with what type of ink is used as I used GBG on boxes, handhelds and such and so far so good,
just the CDI art doesnt like it.
