Do you think the Gamecube competes more directly with the Xbox or the PS2? I'm going to withhold my opinion until I hear a few...

I would say PS2 because Xbox, seems to own the older crowd while PS2 has a very mixed crowd. Game Cube seem to be more admired by the younger generation. As much as I love the Game Cube (it's my personal favorite of the three) I very rarely see anyone 18+ ask for Game Cube games unless its for their kids. I also very rarely see young children show interest in Xbox.

if you consider target age range, then its the ps2

but if you consider overall sales, then its the xbox

The Gamecube in many ways is the odd one out, it doesn't really compete with either directly but I'll try to do a fair comparison anyway. In Europe the 3 consoles are neck and neck more than anywhere else and seem to compete more directly because of it but even as such Sony still has a clear lead in sales there. In Japan Nintendo doesn't really compete with either company as it has its own territory and sticks to it so it isn't really threatened, well at least not until the PSP gets a little bigger in terms of sales but that won't be until this time next year or possibly even later. Likewise in Japan Microsoft and Sony compete as directly there as they do in North America except for the fact that Microsoft hasn't even sold half a million units there in about 4 years of desperate futile attempts. In North America Microsoft and Nintendo compete more directly than anywhere else and Nintendo is loosing out a bit because of it. And as I stated earlier Microsoft is going after Sony full throttle on all fronts and is actually starting to win in Europe and North America as Sony is deadlocked and Microsoft's support keeps rising. As for Nintendo they have only really lost out in North America but are still doing just fine especially since they currently own the handheld market.

The daft thing is though, apparently the average age of a Gamecube owner is 25 LOL

Kiddy games yes... but there's lots of us out there over 30 balancing it out ;)

I have heard these statistics before as well. Half the Gamecube games I own are M rated. Another quarter of them are T rated. I also own a few kid games of course like Mario Kart, Windwaker(that's definately a kids game.) and Sonic Mega Collection.

I'm guessing the same thing!

Oddly enough, everyone that I know who owns a GameCube also owns an Xbox. Everyone who I know that owns a PS2 just owns a PS2.

Don't know what that means.

Count me in the Xbox/GC group.

I never really thought of GC as competing with one or the other. I always thought of all three competing with eachother, but with MS and Sony going after the same 18-30 year old male demographic. I've always thought of Ninty kind of doing things its own way, with its focus on its core franchises aimed at a larger audience and its marketing has centered around that.

Hard to put that fact into perspective without knowing the exact defintion of "owner". If the 50 year old dad "owns" the GC, but only his 10 year-old kid is playing it... then that number doesn't have too much meaning =/

I have a Gamecube and PS2, but no Xbox. Interesting you brought that up.

I always thought all three were competing against each other equally, although Gamecube is probably more closely competing with Xbox at this point for sales.

Like others said it seems to be competeing with PS2 when it comes to age, but as for sales I don't think it competes with either. As much as I like my GC, it doesn't seem to be anywhere near the PS2 or Xbox in sales, I don't even think that Sony and Microsoft see it as a competitor anymore.

RE4 gave it a boost, but it doesn't look like it was enough.

Well Zelda is like 10 months away. I dunno why nintendo doesn't go after GTA games, they got RE games while are way more violent.

I would say comparing this generation console libraries, Gc is better than xbox for me.
