Just a few disjointed thoughts attempting to get this thread back on the track of discussion instead of the current track of nettiquette.

I think Dungeon Seige and Morrowind gave some pretty fair choices between genders.

I also think there have been some great female characters in games (a few have already been mentioned, but let's not forget April Ryan and Cate Archer.).

One of the main points of the article is that it offends a woman when there are women avatars from which to choose that, often, the choice is between women in heightened states of physiologically demonstrated sexual arousal.

What is so hard to understand about that being offensive? I've seen a lot of guys bitching about political correctness while missing this considerably large point.

Some of my favorite games of late were Eternal Darkness and Beyond Good and Evil.

Frankly, if at any point the heroine of Eternal Darkness had displayed any signs of arousal while the walls were bleeding and the screams of the damned rang hollowly through the house, I would have been very upset. The cognitive dissonance would have been staggering.

But thats a moot point; the issue at hand is in fact that nearly every game w/ regard to female games is the equivalent of Cho Anki. Nearly universally, be it a rough and tumble incredibly endowed heiress shooting her way through nazis for lost treasures, or an incredibly endowed vampiress shooting her way through nazis... wait a minute?

They're all heaving their bosoms on the verge of simply tearing off their denim g string and stabbing two fingers in because of the incredible virility of the player and their indomitable control over the character's very destiny. If I fired up Serious Sam and he looked like he wanted to rip his organ out of his pants and lay down suppression fire everytime I touched the joystick, I would hesitate to do it again myself. Well, actually, that's dirty lies; I would just make sure not to get any in my eyes.

Point is it's bullshit, it disenfranchies more than half of the potential market and its done for the same reason that seperate Hollywood studios made Contact and The Arrival, Heat and Things to Do in Denver when you're Dead and Deep Impact and Armageddon within months of each other: Fear, Ignorance and just plain old Laziness. These are the Virtues you defend, Avatar. You sure you don't wanna try for Wisdom, Justice and Humility instead?

Okay, never played/heard of Cho Anki, but I see what you're saying. It sounds like those games are games designed for male gamers even though they have female protagonists. Nightshade is probably another example. "Hey Shinobi did okay, lets see how many more we can sell by putting a lovely Asian female in it."

I guess someone should look at how mostly gender neutral games are enjoyed by either sex.

How did Katamari Damacy fare among female gamers and did it have anything to do with the King of all Cosmos' unnaturally large package? I doubt it, but it's a good example of some fairly pronounced male genitals. The gameplay was pretty gender free (even if the little green guy was a guy), I wonder what would make a bigger list? Gender biased gameplay or gender non-biased gameplay.

That being said from what I've seen most women seem to be more attracted to games with lots of social aspects, like DDR or MMORPGs. if you think about it there are tons of games out there with average female characters in them and none of them seem to have captured a large portion or even average portion of the female population.

He's still missing the point, however. The subject up for discussion isn't "Is the game industry thriving as is?" It's "How much better would the industry do/how many more females would play, if the player avatar options were modified?"

The latter part of my last post were my thoughts on that subject. to sum it up games have been made that have been targeted at girls for a long time but none have caught on to a large degree (except online gaming and DDR). I don't think changing avatars to be less sexy would affect that, but perhaps adding more social aspects to games would. As for why I went on a long rant about how the video game industry could survive without tapping the female market, it was a response to another poster stating that the game industry would wither and die if it didn't.

Does every single medium have to appeal and/or pander to every race / gender / disabled person? Why won't you or many others even CONSIDER that perhaps the BASIC PRINCIPLE of videogaming just doesn't appeal to the majority of females? Put as many plainly dressed intelligent super heroines in games as you want but that still won't drag the vast majority of women into gaming. There are fundamental differences between females and males, both socially and biologically. You can close your eyes and ignore the research all you want and state that men and women are exactly the same and equal in all ways, but science and research has proven otherwise. Companies aren't going to start totally changing things around to cater to a maket that may not and possibly can not even exist. You can argue morals and equality all you want but thats not the issue. Money is.

The Money issue is irrelevant to the point, the best selling games of a simpler times crossed gender barriers with no issue. Donkey Kong, Ms. Pac Man, even Zelda ignored gender barriers. Heh thanks portnoyd. Sometimes in the heat of the moment people get a little too hot-headed. I probally should've ended the argument earler when it degenerated into me and SF basically shouting our opinions at eachother louder and louder. Hell I would even forgive SF it he admits that he got a little too hot under the collar. :)
